Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: MMI) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Google will acquire Motorola Mobility for $40.00 per share in cash, or a total of about $12.5 billion, a premium of 63% to the closing price of Motorola Mobility shares on Friday, August 12, 2011. The transaction was unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies.

よりにもよって、友達を放り出すなんて、どうかしてるよ。

Googleは現代のWebから学べても、過去の歴史から学べないのか?自製ハードウェアの互換機戦略なんて、John Sculleyの最大の過ちではないか。Jobsを追い出したのがゼロ番目の過ちという意見もありうるが、それはさておき。

考えても見てほしい。もしMicrosoftがHPなりDellなりを買収したとしたら。Wintelというエコシステムは、瓦解する。足並みを揃えたとしたらそれは自社株主に対する裏切りだし、しかし揃えないとしたら今度は互換機メーカーに対する裏切り。そんな足下では、前に進むどころか立っていることもおぼつかなくなる。

Apple方式で行くか、Microsoft方式で行くか。中途半端は許されない。Mac互換機が過去に示したように。

呆れたのは、CEOのblog。

ここに、SamsungやHTCの名は、ない。ましてやソニエリやSharpは名どころか存在すら忘れられていてもおかしくない。

AppleやMicrosoftの名は出てくるのに。

こんな失礼を通り越して無礼なCEOメッセージを見たのは空前かも知れない。

絶後であることを願うと同時に、今やGoogleとなったMotorola Mobilityを除くOpen Handset Allianceメンバー各位に心からお悔やみを申し上げずにはいられない。

それにしても$12.5Bという買収金額の安さは正直目を疑った。6割も色つけているのに、Googleの時価総額の1/15、Appleの時価総額の1/28に過ぎないではないか。しかし以下を見れば、それも納得がいく。

スマートフォンではなく、携帯電話機市場から上がる利益全体の2/3を、Appleが抑えているというのである。

GoogleはもしかしてJobs復帰後のAppleがやったように、AndroidをGoogle専用にするか、あるいはAndroidをDarwin化して形の上では「オープンソースOS」をベースにしつつ、肝心の部分をGoogleOSとしてGoogle Phone専用にするのかも知れない。しかしそれだけの時間が果たしてGoogleにあるのだろうか。

そしてGoogleに袖にされた端末メーカーに、Windows Phone なり WebOS なりに移行する時間は果たして残っているのだろうか。あるいは真の Open Handset OS を開発するだけの時間は。

いまのはまずかったよ、Google。

私はiOSユーザーでAndroid懐疑派だが、こんな形でAndroidが自滅するのは望まない。
