Fourth-Place Medal, a Yahoo! Sports blog covering the Olympics

Hard to tell if skating fans are looking forward to Tuesday night’s opening of the women’s competition or dreading it. After Canadian skater Joannie Rochette lost her mother on Sunday, all eyes have been on Rochette and the Canadian team. Rochette plans to skate Tuesday night, although that could change at any time.

The Rochette story has taken some of the heat off of South Korea's Kim Yu-Na, who’s under a lot of pressure from back home to perform after a year spent in the limelight.  The Americans are bringing a young team, and Japan’s Mao Asada may attempt a triple triple axel — no small feat.

Join former Olympian and world champion Elvis Stojko and 2006 Olympic silver medallist Sasha Cohen at 6 pm PST/9 pm EST to talk about these stories and more and to get their expert analysis on tonight’s competition.

Thank you elvis for your voice , everyone forgets that he worked his whole life from the time he was 4 years old to the sport everyday , emotionally and physically to the sport he has worked his whole life basically for figure skating , only to get caught up in politics of the judging which was not fair to him for the dedication he gave the sport and not only that , but the things he achieved in the sport always pushing the envelope and accomplishing all his goals. he has a great voice and needs to be heard not critisized for it , he was wrongly caught in politics and thats never ever been fair ,not for some one who was so amazing in every way for the sport , his fans and making history, only for his own industry to let him down and be unfair to him when he helped make the industry what it is today thank you elvis for your voice and all you have done for fans the sport and still doing thank you !

After the young lady from Turkey skated, they said she wouldn't win a medal. Why? This is the first night of skating right?? How could they know that this early?

I don't think that "politics" is the issue here. I'm not a great expert, but I am a figure skating fan. I watched the final skates of Plushenko and Lysacek. Plushenko may be able to do a great quad, but he was really off form that night. Very sloppy landings on his jumps. And that should count in the judging. In fact. I found his whole performance to be sloppy, not just the jumps. His skating routine seemed to be choppy and poorly thought out. Lysacek didn't do the quad, but he did other jumps. And did them cleanly and beautifully. And his skating was smooth and well thought out. I agree with the judges. Plushenko deserved the silver. Lysacek deserved the gold. And as for Mr. Stojko, I found his remarks to be way off base. He could have given praise to Plushenko's performance without trashing Lysacek's performance. I think he needs to make a public apology to Lysacek, if he is man enough to do so. And I believe that most people will agree with me.

They don't give medals for being dedicated to a sport. Sorry Elvis.

I watched the Turkish skater's performance and found her charming - but somewhat slow on the ice. I really liked her program and the music, and thought the costume fit both beautifully. She is lovely. She skated cleanly as far as I could tell. What a great debut for the first ever figure-skater from Turkey appearing at an Olympics.

stojko is reacting to the idea that athleticism is being de-emphasized in figure skating...I don't think that's the case. plushenko's routine was sloppy; he was off-center on almost all of his non-quad jumps and as others have noted he didn't do a single jump in the bonus zone and his skating/footwork are not gold medal quality.

Well, I am greatly annoyed with NBC and their foolish decission to not show figure skating live in its entirety. I guess it is more important for NBC to pander to Canadian athletes, villify Russians, and make feel good stories, which might not happen, about the Nordic Combine. An event that most don't care about. It sounds harsh, but it wouldn't bother me a bit to see NBC execs in another plane crash.

Chat doesn't work. Posted two nicely-phrased questions and they didn't even show up. Just had a legitimate question and concern, and I posted it nicely. I've noticed Elvis has taken several opportunities to mention his performance of the quad. I just wanted to know if the quad can be trained and done by many skaters in a manner that reduces risk of injury. Guess they're biased against that question. Evan won the men's.... quads aren't everything.

I love to hear Scott Hamilton commentating the ice skating events. He puts so much emotion and excitement into it that it makes that much more enjoyable to watch. Keep up the great work Scott!

Elvis- If you can be less judgmental on where the sport should go and examine where the sport is; then I'll accept your commentaries. I do agree with you about the athleticism portion in Men's Figure Skating; however, figure skating is also artistry, grace and elegance. It is great if the skater can pull off the quad, but he still has to complete the same grace as with the other jumps.
Plushenko lost the Gold Medal fair and square, and to another great athlete. Don't lessen Lysacek's achievements and winnings, because you could not win the ultimate medal, either. Can you throw the quad...if not back off with your negative reviews...

All Elvis has done this evening is pepper his talk about his quads. I say he needs to get out there and show us how it's done then, if he likes it so much.

Plushenko is the legend and will be remembered forever. Who was that person that was gofted a gold that was by all means Plushenko's, I think his name was Lososec or smth, whatever? Everybody will forget this guy as soon as he becomes unprofitable. Think, Plushenko is getting old and he won't skate any longer, but he could beat the record of gold medals in the row, unfotunately business judges didn't allow that to happened. On the other hand Mr. Losces is young and it is reasonable to believe that by wining a gold he will attract enough temporary attention that will lead to a logical investments into him because we all know that in America as in Asia attention sells. So get ready to see some advertisements and commercials with Losoc soon enough after the Olimpics. Unfortunately, sport became a political and business driven. We all know that Losoc cannot figure scate as Plushenko. BTW i found out that ' losoc ' is a type of fish.

Shame on NBC for not showing the ladies figure skating event on live TV. No sport combines beauty and athleticism like women's figure skating. For those who say that figure skating is not athletic - try skating up to a high speed, jump and spin in the air, and land on a tiny sliver of a blade...without falling on your butt or cracking your head open. Balance, endurance, coordination, strength. And, simply beautiful to watch. What does NBC do? They rather focus live TV on showing Uzkbekians throwing slabs of concrete on ice and eating raw herring after an Olympic medal celebration. Way to go NBC morons.

The women's figure skating has been boring ever since Kim Yuna started conquering the No.1s. And sometimes I don't know why she always gets that much of a high score when a few other skaters can skate better technique wise, and Kim Yuna's jumps aren't the best. It's so boring now.

LOL, #20. Stop being a hater. Yuna was amazing, being able to handle the pressure of the Korean press and the success of Mao's routine. I believe, currently, she deserves the #1 spot.

Well ... since the "Yahoo Live Chat" is catering to a very few, I will post here instead ... I felt Nagasu's performance was better than Flatt's ... even tho Nagasu's combination jump wasn't technically as difficult as Flatt's, the spins of Nagasu was much more elegant ...

Elvis, did you try judging at list at junior competitions? (sometime you sound like Phil Jackson). You know the good performer often does not translate into good judge or coach/trainer.
