Earth's 2 Moons? It's Not Lunacy, But New Theory

Earth Two Moons

First Posted: 8/3/11 03:03 PM ET Updated: 8/4/11 12:40 PM ET

WASHINGTON — In a spectacle that might have beguiled poets, lovers and songwriters if only they had been around to see it, Earth once had two moons, astronomers now think. But the smaller one smashed into the other in what is being called the "big splat."

The result: Our planet was left with a single bulked-up and ever-so-slightly lopsided moon.

The astronomers came up with the scenario to explain why the moon's far side is so much more hilly than the one that is always facing Earth.

The theory, outlined Wednesday in the journal Nature, comes complete with computer model runs showing how it might have happened and an illustration that looks like the bigger moon getting a pie in the face.

Outside experts said the idea makes sense, but they aren't completely sold yet.

This all supposedly happened about 4.4 billion years ago, long before there was any life on Earth to gaze up and see the strange sight of dual moons. The moons themselves were young, formed about 100 million years earlier when a giant planet smashed into Earth. They both orbited Earth and sort of rose in the sky together, the smaller one trailing a few steps behind like a little sister in tow.

The smaller one was a planetary lightweight. The other was three times wider and 25 times heavier, its gravity so strong that the smaller one just couldn't resist, even though it was parked a good bit away.

"They're destined to collide. There's no way out. ... This big splat is a low-velocity collision," said study co-author Erik Asphaug, a planetary scientist at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

What Asphaug calls a slow crash is relative: It happened at more than 5,000 mph, but that's about as slow as possible when you are talking planetary smashups. It's slow enough that the rocks didn't melt.

And because the smaller moon was more than 600 miles wide, the crash took a while to finish even at 5,000 mph. Asphaug likened the smaller moon to a rifle bullet and said, "People would be bored looking at it because it's taking 10 minutes just for the bullet to bury itself in the moon. This is an event if you were looking at, you'd need a big bag of popcorn."

The rocks and crust from the smaller moon would have spread over and around the bigger moon without creating a crater, as a faster crash would have done.

"The physics is really surprisingly similar to a pie in the face," Asphaug said.

And about a day later, everything was settled and the near and far sides of the moon looked different, Asphaug said.

Co-author Martin Jutzi of the University of Bern in Switzerland said the study was an attempt to explain the odd crust and mountainous terrain of the moon's far side. Asphaug noticed it looked as if something had been added to the surface, so the duo started running computer simulations of cosmic crashes.

Earth had always been an oddball in the solar system as the only planet with a single moon. While Venus and Mercury have no moons, Mars has two, while Saturn and Jupiter have more than 60 each. Even tiny Pluto, which was demoted to dwarf status, has four moons.

The theory was the buzz this week in Woods Hole, Mass., at a conference of scientists working on NASA's next robotic mission to the moon, said H. Jay Melosh of Purdue University.

"We can't find anything wrong with it," Melosh said. "It may or may not be right."

Planetary scientist Alan Stern, former NASA associate administrator for science, said it is a "very clever new idea," but one that is not easily tested to learn whether it is right.

A second moon isn't just an astronomical matter. The moon plays a big role in literature and song. And poet Todd Davis, a professor of literature at Penn State University, said this idea of two moons – one essentially swallowing the other – will capture the literary imagination.

"I'll probably be dreaming about it and trying to work on a poem," he said.

And that is how we know that sexual preference is genetic.

Read Genesis 1:1:31 - 2:1:25 it explains everything about the creation of the heavens and the earth and all the animals, birds, and man and woman.
4.4 Billion years ago? I doubt that, but Scientists have to keep working at trying to prove the Bible wrong.

I think the Bible does a very excellent job of proving the Bible wrong.

a theory, just like mythology to explain the why of life.

Hmmmmm. It musta' smashed right in there and stole all the cheese......eh? Or perhaps the "astronomers" who come up with these theories have nothing better to do except get "smashed" and watch the sky......That's it!

Wow no proof but another wild guess.Last year Nasa said the moon was a hollow ball because when something they sent there crashed into it ,the moon rang like a bell for hours. Next year we will hear its the reason for the bad ecconomy

They can come up with a million theories if they want but no one will ever know the real answer. How can they say it happened 4.4 billion years ago ,how do they know it goes back that far? Also maybe there was just one moon all along, just like they said mercury had no moons okay so what's wrong with the Earth having one moon and if the moon is slightly lopsided so what? Why does there always have to be something more to it? Maybe, that's just the way it is.

The moon acts as a shield to the earth. God planned it this way. Before making a spectacle of yourself guessing incorrectly, admire the evening spectacle that creates wonder and wonder why God created it. The light it provides in the evening should be comfort enough. But knowing it serves a larger purpose is a natural wonder.

I have explained the phenomena of the lunar origin in my book 'Download' An Alternative story of Noah and his Ark, published on Amazon in 2007. The Moon was a result of Earth's egestion of matter when the Earth's crust was forming in its earlier days. When the matter egested out of the then center of the forming Pacific Ocean, it still had a small umbilical cord attached which snapped and on falling back into the Pacific Ocean it became a small group of Islands later to become known as Hawaii! The mass of the American Continent then fell away from the forming Euro-Asian bulk causing the infill of the Atlantic Ocean. The "Tectonic plate theory" backs this up in every detail. Hawaii is centered on a hotspot below and the 'Pacific Rim' is still a perimeter of volcanic activity! The main group of Hawaiian islands are still drifting away from center and new smaller eruptions are being created. The tour guides on Hawaii talk of their mountain as being the tallest on Earth. So it is if you measure its full height from the crust's base thru' sea level to it's tip at full altitude! Everest starts much higher!
I am enlarging on this theory in my next book called 'Upload'.An alternative tale of the future. There is and was only one Earthly Moon. A little out of shape but the reason for this is obvious!

How about proof before a guess! "Yep" that's correct now stop wasting time on it.
Probably gov funded, bet you money.

I think it's time for our earth to have a big splat.

Didn't these guys watch Transformers?
This was caused by our Moon colliding with Centinel Prime's massive ship; and later aggravated by the Decepticons trying to teleport Cybertron into the Earth's orbit. It's all there, maaaan.

Why is it that modern scientist take ancient stories such as this one and put a "New Spin" on the truth. Read the Sumerian accounting of how our world was formed. This is old stuff. Western Culture is such a joke when it tries to take credit for things that have been around for thousands of years BEFORE Greek civilizations were ENLIGHTENED by them. All honor and credit for what we now call Western innovation have their proper origin in Egypt and Sumeria. Give credit where it is due.

The Myan civ also knew of black holes and wrote of them in their accounting for the center of our galaxy. It has only been within the last five or six years that science has confirmed that there is what they call a "Super Black Hole" at the center of our galaxy which was written about thousands of years ago.

The Dogon spoke of a binary Sirius star system. "Nope, we can't see it so it aint there..." Until their telescopes and egos gave way to the truth. Wake up and understand that Western culture has destroyed human history in the halls of Alexandria by burning all known documentation of our past in order to control, conquer and destroy.

The MOON also has the finest source of Helium (Helium 3) and if used as a stabilizing agent with the atmosphere's abundant inert gases, can provide fuel for long journeys around the universe without the need fo oxygen, as oxygen is produced simultaneously.

Now, this FACT matters more than how the formation of our moon occurred, and especially if one considers that a U-Plasma engine has laredy been invented; that runs off of this type of fuel, that has proven to run six cylinders for 1,000 hours on just one quart of this fuel, and yet I was unable to get past the door of the Secretary of Energy to introduce this technology to our nation; becasue "Tell I To The White House" he said to me....and of course, one guess how that went... there is more info on this at LEED333@AOL.COM for anyone interested.
