I was walking a back alley where it began to grow dark. I was able to tell neither how I had come there nor why I was there. There was dim light drifting low at the corners of many streets. Dreaming the start of next one day, will little light―the remains of the day―sleep such a deep sleep as a sinker? Although I did not drink, I was walking unsteadily, feeling as if I were swimming. One person went away from me, and so did another person. Everybody had turned his face away from me. Nobody was walking towards me. It seemed to me that, this being so, anyone would disappear from around me, but there was still somebody. Whichever moment might be chosen, many people were wandering equally. I stared into space, with my eyes gazing on a remarkably bright star.
