Rumor: Xbox 360 Games Could Run On Windows 8 PCs

You see that big "Rumor" tag in the headline. Good; keep that in mind as you read this story, because this one could be too good to be true. A persistent batch of rumors from the tech world suggest that Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 operating system will allow users to play Xbox 360 games on their computers.

Teknylate reports from an unrevealed source that if you have Windows 8 installed on your PC, you'll be able to pop Xbox 360 discs directly into your computer tower and load them up as though it were a console. Supposedly gamers will also be able to access their Xbox 360 dashboard and Xbox Live services on PC.

The rumor suggests that players will need to pay a fee to unlock this feature on Windows 8, although its unclear if this just means subscribing to Xbox Live Gold or paying on top of that subscription. It's important to remember that this is all rumor and speculation at this point, but various similar rumors have been circulating for several months now.

Microsoft has yet to announce an official release date for Windows 8, but the company is expected to continue unveiling features for the operating system in the next few months. Hopefully that means we'll know one way or another whether this rumor is legitimate soon.

  • Sounds fishy
  • very bad idea. it will create unbalance online. people with controller up againt people with mouse and keyboards.
  • Sounds too good to be true.

  • it would make them fools more money but probly have some not buy there systems. but wouldn't it be the same as buying the pc version of a game beter
  • It would not be hard to cross platform the multiplayer and 360 controllers have been compatible with windows with the right tools for quite some time.

  • I don't think this will ever be true for one reason, and that is potential 360 sales loss. I know those who already own 360's wont be dropping it all of a sudden for Windows 8, but those who don't have one yet, or are on the fence about getting one will most likely opt out of getting the console and go with PC/Win8. Just my opinion as to why this probably will never happen, but it sure would be a nice boost to PC gaming because a lot more people would be buying high end parts to build a good rig.
  • from what I've heard, this rumor is false, because of physical limits of a computer. from how it's been explained to me, compatibility would be a huge issue with some games, and a lot of port work would have to be done to emulate all of them.
  • Odd pretty sure unless WIndows 8 changes the bios chip itself it will not work because to play 360 games you need a emulator or flash your PC bios with the 360 one which is illegal and highly dangerous. Unless that is you have a port system like the Devs use.

  • unless they plan on keeping the 360 crowd and pc people using 360 discs separate online then this is fake, because mouse and keyboard people are gonna own the people using console controls.
  • This has very little to do with the operating system and a lot to do with the hardware. Just installing Win8 isn't going to magically make your 4 year old computer run a 360 game. And what about dual booting Windows on a Mac? I just don't see this happening.
  • Hummm weird.

  • This sounds entirely plausible

  • If this is true, it sounds like a great reason to purchase a PC instead of a Mac. That could be a great ploy. On the other hand.... Wouldn't it go against the idea of having a system devoted to running games way better than you could on a computer?
  • If this is true, 360 sales are going to take a massive dive. A machine that can play only games, or that same machine plus a computer. Which would you choose?
  • You would think by doing this they would ruin some of the Xbox 360's value. I mean you would be able to take your computer and play Halo Reach anywhere.... plus you would get internet.

  • The two questions I have is, 1. Are you going to be able to use your controller. 2. Is there a subscription.
  • Dont pcs have most xbox exclusives. also why play the *** looking xbox version when you can ave the better looking pc version of the game?
  • Sounds too awesome to be real. How else am I supposed to play games on my pc? :/
  • Okay... Wait what?

  • If I could somehow permanently unlock that, I would buy a Windows 8 PC whether I needed a new computer or not. My Xbox 360 is going to break sometime in the probably not too far future. But if I buy a solid Desktop and take care of it, it would last for significantly longer.
