EA-6B Prowler "ICAP I"
Monogram 1/48 scale
VAQ-135 "Black Ravens"
I got it gladly when this Prowler kit was released in 1992. But, I was disillusioned soon by some problems which were included in the kit.
Revell/Monogram might give me hard labor, I thought so at that time.
Some of problems are same as Intruder's( see Intruder's review.).
Further they added pylon's shape and wing folding hinge cover's problems.
The kit's outside-pylon is same as type of EA-6A that have ALQ-41/ALQ-100 antenna.
It must have swelling to outside surface as the Prowler's one.
And, The kit's folding hinge cover is same as the Intruder's metal wing's too.
We have to build them from scratch for better finish as Prowler.
Both problems were resolved by heaping or arranging plastic plate( see photos ).
I removed ALQ-100 "chin-up" antenna that is not necessary for my example from the pylon edge.
(Then in addition, Its shape is incorrect as Prowler's type. It might be EA-6A's type if anything.)
The pylon's problem is also related to ECM pods.
The pod parts are same as the EA-6A's one which is ALQ-76's shape.
I tried convert as ALQ-99's pod(High Band) using kit parts.
I shortened the kit's pods about 5/16 inches in forward panel line .
I installed filling cover in between pylon and pod.
I have not modified the Low Band Pod .
I used the Micro Scale Decal #48-154 for this example.
The Decal's "AJ" letter's blue shadow probably be incorrect
( although in newest AeroMaster's SP48-14 "The CVW-8" same letter had blue shadow. ),
but I used it intact.
Modified other points as follows.
Refueling probe's shape and offset.
Installed refueling receptacle to underside of right air intake.
Planed Armor plate from underside of fuselage.
Added extended fairing to forward main gear door.
Replaced exhaust nozzle by self made parts.( Applied also Intruder's method. )
Detailing up for ECM antenna above the wing tip fuel dump.
Moving canopy. Seat belts and cockpit frames(photo).
Removed optical sight from instrument hood( Not necessary for the Prowler. ).
