Rumor: Rareware on 3Ds? Future of Metroid?

Emily Rogers discusses the possibility of Rareware on 3DS, the future of Metroid as a franchise, and whether to expect lots of Xbox 360 ports to Nintendo’s new console.

Hey guys, it’s Emily Rogers again.  Hope you guys had a great Easter!  I had a lot of fun spending time with my family, many of which I haven’t seen in a long time.  So that was nice to do.  Also, my birthday is coming up so I’m looking forward to that.

Last time I wrote an article with a whole motherload of rumors about Nintendo’s new console which is currently codenamed, “Project Cafe”.  After I revealed that Retrostudios was working on a game that wasn’t Metroid, I saw a other websites coming out with their sources.  Let me just say that the rumor about Retrostudios working on Eternal Darkness 2 or Zelda is way off.  I repeat, Retrostudios is NOT working on Eternal darkness 2 or Zelda.  Scratch both off of those off the list.

In the previous article,  I mentioned how my sources told me there is no way that Nintendo is releasing their new console in 2011 because their focus this holiday season is on 3DS.   In a press release, Iwata revealed the system is coming 2012.  At Nintendo of Japan’s investors meeting, Iwata is getting read to reveal that the system would be coming after April 2012.  Pretty much backs up what I’ve been saying.

Few extra rumors I’ve heard from reliable sources.  Please take with a grain of salt.  Dating a guy who works close with Nintendo has its perks and benefits, but just because I sleep with someone in the gaming industry doesn’t mean every single thing he tells me is accurate.  (Some browsers need to click on page 2)

RUMORS

  • Rare (or Rareware if you prefer) and Nintendo have had discussions about 3DS development.  Nintendo and Rare still have a good relationship with each other, especially since Diddy Kong Racing DS did so well.  Just like with the GBA and the original DS, Microsoft doesn’t seem to have a problem with Rare developing a 3DS game since none of Nintendo’s handhelds are in direct competition with any Microsoft products.    Nintendo brought up the idea of a 3DS enchanced port of Star Fox Adventures, but nothing is in development.  Basically a port with extra enhancements, similar to Rare’s Diddy Kong Racing DS for the Nintendo DS.  Don’t be surprised if Rareware gets 3DS development kits by the end of this year.   Banjo-Kazooie on 3DS is not out of the question either.   Microsoft thinks that if some of Rare’s games do well on Nintendo’s handhelds, then it may lead to Nintendo gamers buying Microsoft systems to play Rare’s games.
  • Ports galore of PS3/360 games for Project Cafe’s launch.  One third party in particular is planning to shamelessly milk the new Nintendo console with lots of PS3/360 ports. Nintendo told developers how easy it is to port games from 360 to the new Nintendo console.  Unfortunately, third parties think that is giving them the greenlight to throw all of their 360/PS3 projects onto the new console instead of making brand new projects that take advantage of Project Cafe’s extra power.
  • Nintendo might start making less Metroid games since every Metroid game released after Metroid Prime 1 has sold less and less with each new Metroid released.   Yoshio Sakamoto would love to be involved as director, producer, and writer of future Metroid games if Nintendo will allow him.  Nintendo will still make Metroid games, but it won’t be considered one of their “big 3″ priorities in comparison to Mario/Zelda like it was for the last 5 years.  They feel that Metroid fans who made Metroid Prime a huge seller, aren’t really showing enough excitement and support for the franchise like they did when the first Prime game came out.

  • Nintendo thinks Earthbound makes more sense on a handheld than a console since Earthbound was never a game that relied on heavy intensive graphics or extremely detailed art styles in the past.

One final note, I have seen a few screenshots of a game for the new Nintendo console, and it was more beautiful than any PS3/360 game I’ve seen.  Why?  Because it’s nice to see a game that uses 360/PS3 quality graphics where it uses more colors than just grey/black/brown/dark green….which seems to be the only color choices that the majority of 360/PS3 games are allowed to have.  Any game that has more colors than those four colors seem to get slammed as “kiddy” by 14 year olds who can’t buy Call of Duty from Gamestop without their mother in the store with them.  People want to debate about which system has the best specs.  But the truth of it all is, graphics are defined by a game’s art style.  And that is where Nintendo shines above other developers because this particular game looks amazing.  You will know what game I’m talking about when E3 comes around.

I hope Rare stay away from the 3DS. It’s not the same company as it was back in the SNES/N64 days, and their since being bought by MS have been questionable to say the least.
It would be suicide for them to release the Wii 2 this year. I’m looking forward to seeing it being unveiled at E3 though after getting a rather lovely PDF sent to me this morning.
Oh, and check out 3DSTribe.com for all your essential 3DS news.

Any news on the online play for the project cafe?

    thanks for the info.

I think Metroid would sell better with a great online multiplayer. As fun as the single-player is, once you beat it….thats it. So instead of buying the game, you could just decide between some friends who would buy which games, then borrow from each other.

no offense, but more or less everything you’ve posted sounds completely bogus and intentionally vague as possible.

bragging about sleeping with some nerd from nintendo for insider info also makes you sound, well, slutty and desperate for hits.

Yeah, I also have insider information. My sources have told me that the console will have a I/O button. Guess you didn’t know that, huh?!

Better make a new post, quick ;)

Let’s hope so about the Rare games thing and not so much about the ports galore thing (which I’m sure will happen anyways, from shameless shovelware producers like Ubisoft)! But no offense to Yoshio Sakamoto, but I’d much rather have Retro Studios do a Metroid if ANYONE’S gonna do a Metroid game. And I completely agree with the limited color palette of most PS3/360 games, Emily! I’ve been saying for years that they basically employ about four colors: red/dark green/black/gray.

Rare is working on Kinect Sports 2 and various other Kinect projects. There’s no 3DS development going on at the company of any kind now and there won’t be in the future. Rare will most likely be used to improve the gaming experience on future Windows Mobile platforms and that’s as far as any handheld development from Rare goes. In fact, the team that made the DS games isn’t even around anymore, moved on to do XBLA titles and those got scrapped too. Leaving a pet project named Jet Force Gemini XBLA in limbo on of the company harddrives.

Microsoft has little interest to release any classic Rare IP’s on the Xbox 360, so I’ve got no clue why you lot think that they’ll release any of those on 3DS or any other Nintendo platform ever.

The best Nintendo could do is to get Chris Seavor, Grant Kirkhope and or others that worked with Nintendo before to form a group and develop new games but most ex-Rarers are happily working on various smaller iPhone ventures.

Maybe people didn’t support Metroid Prime 2 and 3 as much because they were vastly inferior to Prime 1. Prime 3 wasn’t life altering, but it was at least worthy of the Metroid name. Prime 2 just downright sucked. That whole “light world v dark world” is played out. If I want to play a good game with that mechanic I’ll play SNES Zelda.

Metroid: Other M is the first “true metroid” game that I have passed on (Metroid Pinball doesn’t count IMO).

Make me a game on par with Prime 3 and I’ll buy it on day one. Make me a game on par with Prime 1 or Super Metroid and I’ll preorder two copies. One to play and one to stay unopened as a collector’s piece.

Rare possibly making games for the 3DS, including a Banjo Kazooie game? That’s awesome, as is the possibility of a Star Fox Adventures remake and a Mother series game on the 3DS.

Please let these rumours be true. Even if it’s for Rare’s sake, as their recent games over at Microsoft’s side have been between mediocre and awful, and I don’t want them stuck making Kinect games for eternity.

“Dating a guy who works close with Nintendo has its perks and benefits, but just because I sleep with someone in the gaming industry doesn’t mean every single thing he tells me is accurate.”

I mean, it’s not like we’d take you seriously in the first place (this site looks hilariously crap and noone knows who you are, so this has “ATTENTION-WHORE’” written all over the page), but after reading this, I think it’d be better for you to buy yourself a room in the red light district and stay there.

kudoz for the art style and colour limitations comment at the end there.

Also, rare lost all their talented developers years ago, so I don’t care what they do on 3DS, but a port from DS to 3DS with some enhancements is just a straight up no-shame cash-in. Won’t be buying.

    Ms. Rogers,

First, I want to say, you are beautiful and your bf is very blessed to have you. I’m sorry about the assholes at NeoGAF.

I want to ask, if I may, have your sources mentioned anything about how powerful or not Project Cafe will be? Will Project Cafe be about as powerful as the PS3 and Xbox 360? Slightly more powerful than the PS360? Significantly more powerful (in terms of graphics capabilities) than the PS360? Vastly more powerful than PS360? Any sense of what to expect with the first of the 8th gen consoles?

There are contradictory reports from 01net, IGN, Kotaku and the like. Some report it is about as powerful as the PS360 or roughly around the same, some report that it’s slightly more powerful than the PS360, being a notch above, and some say significantly more powerful.

Could you also clarify or comment on the rumor that Project Cafe is using a AMD R700 GPU? (I’m hoping not, as the R700 series is antiquated).

Emily, this is total fraud. Are you aware of what happened with the release of the rare game diddy kong racing on the DS? Due to licenses, Banjo had to be removed from this Nintendo release. At this point in time, its not even possible for a Banjo game or the Banjo character to be released on a Nintendo system. There you have it folks, this is nothing more than PURE B.S.

  34. Joshua Laudermilk
    Posted May 2, 2011 at 1:44 am

    @truthseeker

Diddy Kong Racing DS was developed by Rare and released in 2007. It was developed and released while Rare was a subsidiary of Microsoft. It became a subsidiary of Microsoft in 2002. So a Microsoft subsidiary developed and released a game for the DS. This fact nullifies what you are trying to argue and supports the idea that Microsoft is not opposed to developing for the DS and 3DS since it is not competing in the handheld market. I think Microsoft is smart enough, unlike Sony, to know that Nintendo has a monopoly on the handheld market and the only threat to Nintendo in said market is Apple.

Ok Josh, explain to me why the characters of Banjo and Conker had to be removed before the game was released on the Nintendo DS. Here is another quote from a seperate website…

because Rare was bought by Microsoft, Banjo and Conker were taken out of the game.

In other words, all characters that appeared in Diddy Kong Racing DS are owned by Nintendo. Rare and Microsoft removed the characters of Banjo and Conker, because they are their licensed characters and couldn’t put them on a Nintendo owned system.

Don’t you get it? Microsoft owns the characters of Banjo and Conker, and they only want them to appear on their consoles. This is why you will never see another Banjo title on a Nintendo system at this point in time, as they as Bill Gates owns them!!
