Simon S - 15 Oct 2005 16:56 GMT I have XP Home with SP2. Have looked thro' all the threads but cannot get the "Did You Know" section to load up even when connected to Internet. It was previously stuck with a DEC 2004 date. I have re-installed XP and SP2 and it now states I have to connect to Internet which I already am!
Please, please does anyone have a definitive solution? (Usually find Kelly's solutions work fine but not this time as I don't have the file that Kelly says to delete).

Hummmm, Ramesh, what do you make of this solution????
Very Interesting.......
Thanks, I'll keep trying that to see if it always works.

It did not work for me (using broadband) with or without IE window open. Same old 0 byte newsblock02[1].xml in TIF

I've intentionally removed those XML files earlier (few months back) to test it. Haven't got a solution for this problem yet.

Here are some things for you to consider. I tried to pay careful attention to listing each thing that I did and the result.
I have Windows XP Professional SP1.
In my experiments, nothing looks 100% consistent. But synchronizing the clock is definitely related. Synchronizing the clock before opening H & S with NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml missing and then opening H & S creates a new NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml. But not every time.
Seems like a lot of screwing around to get a feature that I don't even use to update correctly. ;-)

if C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News\NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml is missing. But not every time.
I can drag NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml to the Desktop, open Help and Support and I see the When you are connected to the Internet message. Close H & S, drag NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml back, open H&S and Did you know works, whether the Updated: date is current or not.
I can remove newsver.xml or leave it in C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News and I see no difference in Help and Support, under Did you know.

> Hi Ramesh, > [quoted text clipped - 13 lines] > Seems like a lot of screwing around to get a feature that I don't even use > to update correctly. Wesley Vogel - 16 Oct 2005 22:30 GMT Hi Ramesh,
Here's what I have.
Windows XP Professional SP1.
I have changed tense here and there, but I am not going to fix my grammar.
I opened Help and Support Center. I clicked on Index. I heard two Windows XP Ding.wav sounds, one right after the other. I got an error message... --------------------------- Help --------------------------- Cannot locate "C:\\WINNT\\PCHealth\\HelpCtr\\Indices\\merged.hhk". --------------------------- OK ---------------------------
I clicked on OK, that error message closed and then I saw another error message... --------------------------- Help --------------------------- Cannot locate "C:\\WINNT\\PCHealth\\HelpCtr\\Indices\\merged.hhk". --------------------------- OK ---------------------------
I clicked OK on that message to close it.
My merged.hhk is in C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Indices
There has never been a C:\WINNT folder on this machine. Windows has always been in C:\WINDOWS.
After closing the two error messages, the left hand pane has... A white Index link in a blue band and below it, it is just a blank white space with no red X mark.
Right clicking the Index link brings up a context menu...
----------------- Back Forward (Grayed out/unavailable) ----------------- Select all ----------------- Print Refresh (Grayed out/unavailable) ----------------- Add to Favorites (Grayed out/unavailable) ----------------- Properties -----------------
Clicking the Index link flashes the info in the right hand pane.
Clicking Back on the context menu makes Forward Not grayed out/available after clicking the Index link. Otherwise clicking Back returned me to the Help and Support Center home page.
Clicking Forward on the context menu, when it is available, flashes the info in the right hand pane.
Clicking Select All on the context menu selects everything in the left hand pane. Which is nothing, it just makes the empty white space turn blue.
Clicking Properties on the context menu brings up a Properties sheet with a General tab.
Properties General Index.htm Protocol: Unknown Protocol Type: HTM File Address: hcp://system/blurbs/Index.htm (URL)
The right hand pane has this in it... [[Index

Not worth it.
From Help and Support... [[Click Index on the navigation bar at the top of the window, and then either type a keyword or scroll through the keyword list. ]]
It looks to me like Index is just a list of keywords and maybe with links.
I opened merged.hhk with Notepad. It looks like a list of %windir%\Help\*.chm files.

BTW, I synchronized my clock, then opened Help and Support...

Did you know? Updated: Monday, 17 October, 2005
A new NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml file was created in... %windir%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News -----
These experiments may not have strictly followed the scientific method, but I'm not a scientist. And I am impatient.
If the NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml file is missing, this seems to cause the When you are connected to the Internet message to appear under Did you know in Help and Support.
Clicking on most anything in Help and Support and then hitting the Back button seems to cause a new newsver.xml to be created in %windir%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News
Sometimes just opening Help and Support created a new newsver.xml file.
I could see no problems with Help and Support if the newsver.xml file was missing. At some point, navigating around Help and Support caused the newsver.xml file to be recreated if it was missing.
Getting connected to the Internet, either directly with Internet Explorer or through Help and Support (either Searching or clicking a link that takes one to the Internet) or with synchronizing the pc clock, both of which use Internet Explorer, creates a new NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml file while Did you know is Updating...
I have to imagine what I saw on XP Pro would happen on XP Home.
I have no idea what else has to be working correctly for any of this to have happened.
There are too many combinations of how you can get connected to the Internet in Help and Support.
I seemed to have spent several hours screwing around with this. I am going to go find some lunch.

hmmm..I tried all that you did. My system still won't show the new date and information. Keep on getting the standard message, "Did you know...when you are connected..." etc. New files are not created in the %windir%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News folder.
Tried it with firewall off, just the router with NAT on. Maybe I have some services off that need to be on? The search function works in Help and Support, though. A mystery for this system, and not one I'm willing to spend much time on.

Wesley Vogel - 19 Oct 2005 05:23 GMT Hi Rock,
Help and Support service is the only one I can think of. But, if it wasn't running H & S wouldn't even open.
<shrug>
For giggles, I have these services running: AVG7 Alert Manager Server (This one must be the key ;-) ) COM+ Event System Cryptographic Services DHCP Client Event Log Help and Support Network Connections Plug and Play Print Spooler Protected Storage Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Security Accounts Manager Server System Event Notification Task Scheduler Terminal Services (WTF is this running? It won't at next boot!) TrueVector Internet Monitor (ZoneAlarm) User Profile Hive Cleanup (Gets rid of Userenv errors and speeds up shutdown) Windows Audio Windows Management Instrumentation Windows Time (I have had this set to Auto since I've been messing with H&S Did you know) Workstation
Terminal Services is Disabled and stopped now. I rebooted. @#$%$% Critical Updates. I didn't check my services after the last batch of 10 Critical Updates. CUs or Windows Update sometimes messes with the services.
Terminal Services isn't related.
I emptied %windir%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News, opened H&S messed around a little and..

I figure that it's clean living. :-D
Disabling Terminal Services caused me to lose the names in the User Name column/Processes tab in Task Manager.
I wonder if *I* set Terminal Services to Automatic? I have to keep better notes.

Protected Storage Server Terminal Services Windows Time Workstation
I started windows time and that didn't help. I might sometime reinstall the protocols to run server and workstation services and see if those are involved, but I don't plan on doing it any time soon.
If it's a matter of clean living, then I'm doomed for sure!

Wesley Vogel - 22 Oct 2005 16:24 GMT Apparently the Protected Storage, Server, Terminal Services, Windows Time and Workstation services have nothing to do with H & S Did you know updating.
Protected Storage hmm, I had the wrong impression about this service.
I closed Outlook Express and set Protected Storage to disabled.
Opened OE and a Logon window popped up...
[[Please enter your user name and password for the following server.]]
I typed in my password, checked the Remember Password box and clicked OK.
A second [[Please enter your user name and password for the following server.]] popped up
I typed in my password for my second E-mail account (after I found where I had it written down), checked the Remember Password box and clicked OK.
Closed OE and reopened it. No Logon window popped up.
I rebooted. Opened OE and no Logon windows popped up.
I wonder why I thought I needed the Protected Storage service running?
I have Append Completion, AutoComplete and AutoSuggest turned off. -----

Hope you don't mind me jumping in. . .
I read the thread you pointed to with great interest. Hmm. . . my clock is normally updated by XP every day (once a day) and by my mail client (Turnpike) every 8 hours BUT my Did you know? was stuck at June 30, 2005.
However, I use the University of Manchester (England) timeserver. I noticed that poster Lizzie in the thread said nothing happened when she used time.nist.gov. -- H&S only updated when she used time.windows.com. So I'm wondering, could it be the act *not* just of synchronising the clock, but of using the specific Windows timeserver that somehow makes the difference?
Unfortunately I can't try it out because somehow I've managed to lose my NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml and now just get the "When you are connected to the Internet. . ." display :-( Would it be possible for you to send me a copy of yours, as you offered another poster? I'd be very grateful! My reply-to address works.

I tried again today (monday) WITHOUT opening IE first, and it updated just fine anyway; so, I can't tell if the trick was responsible or if it's just a "good day".
I'd like to see it not work and then try the trick and get it to work to be sure the trick is responsible. But, as when looking for the solution to any problem, when you look carefully it won't happen! Thank you Mr. Murphy!
It's too nice a day to worry about it, time to leave the hole and venture down the road of life...

Double click the clock. Click the Internet Time tab. Click the Update Now button.
If the Update Now button is not available, select: Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server. Click the Apply button. Click the Update Now button.
[[Click to synchronize your computer clock with the selected Internet Time Server. You must be connected to the Internet, and the Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server check box must be selected.
If synchronization fails, a message will display below explaining the reason. Most corporate firewalls will block time synchronization, as will some personal firewalls. If the network is too busy or not available for some reason, try again later.]]

Sorry, I misread your problem.
See if one of these helps...
Windows XP Internet Programs Cannot Connect to the Internet Through Broadband Connection http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307164
Help and Support Center Does Not Automatically Connect to the Internet http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315955
Also, if you do not have one of these files NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml (For XP Pro) or NewsHeadlines_1033_Personal.xml (For XP Home) in this folder C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News you will get the When you are connected to the Internet message instead of the Updated: date.

Connect to the Internet with Internet Explorer, open Help and Support, navigate around Help and Support for a while. Click some links. Type something in the Search box and click the arrow, click the Back button. See if NewsHeadlines_1033_Personal.xml gets recreated in the %windir%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News folder.
