PISCATAWAY — Bias charges are being considered against Rutgers students Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei, who are accused of using a camera hidden in a dorm room to transmit online a gay sexual encounter involving Ravi's roommate Tyler Clementi, authorities said tonight.

Clementi, of Ridgewood, committed suicide after he learned of the hidden camera by jumping off the George Washington Bridge. Authorities confirmed a body found in the Hudson River Wednesday was Clementi's.

Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro, and Wei, 18, of West Windsor, face charges of invasion of privacy and transmitting the image over the internet. Both are free pending court hearings.

‘’The initial focus of this investigation has been to determine who was responsible for remotely activating the camera in the dormitory room of the student and then transmitting the encounter on the Internet,’’ Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said in a statement released this evening.

‘’Now that two individuals have been charged with invasion of privacy, we will be making every effort to assess whether bias played a role in the incident, and, if so, we will bring appropriate charges.’’

Gov. Chris Christie called Clementi's death an "unspeakable tragedy" today and said he would let Attorney General Paula Dow to evaluate whether bias charges would be warranted.

Rutgers University President Richard L. McCormick issued a statement this evening saying he had spoken with Clementi's parents to convey the condolences on behalf of the university.

"The Rutgers University community is in mourning over the death of first-year student Tyler Clementi," McCormick said in the statement. "We grieve for him and for his family, friends and classmates as they deal with the tragic loss of a gifted young man who was a strong student and a highly accomplished musician."

"I have spoken with Tyler’s parents to extend my own and the university’s deepest sympathies, and we will continue to respect the family’s request for privacy. It is up to us at Rutgers to honor this young man’s life by reaffirming, and living up to, our commitment to the values of civility, dignity, compassion, and respect for one another."

Ravi is accused of using a webcam to secretly live stream Clementi during a sexual encounter with another man on Sept. 19 while viewing it in Wei's dorm room on Rutger's Piscataway campus.

Ravi attempted it a second time on Sept. 21, authorities said, and posted on his Twitter account: "Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it's happening again."

The radical homosexual activist lobby already is trying to hijack this horrible suicide by portraying it as gay so they can advance their legal agaenda......it wasn't.....it was an INVASION OF PRIVACY regardless of sexual orientation.....if Tyler had been hetero he still would've taken his own life.....Back off this one gays- stop being political vultures! ...................... RIP Tyler

its amazing that the SL/advance internet ad company can load a million little interlinked ads on this page that never load right but cant update the reply box to include formatting. Granted I know its a 15 year leap in technology over manually inputting in HTML tags... but I'm sure there is some kid fresh out of high school that can do it...

I was also wondering why they are saying that this was done because of his sexual orientation.

I think the two immature students who sneakily spied on and broadcast the liaison would have done so regardless of the gender of that boys sexual partner.

They are scum and did something very wrong and it resulted in someone's death. Yes they should be charged and brought to justice.

BUT the fact that the gay rights groups are jumping on the bandwagon and claiming it as something done to them is too much, they should stop acting as if it was only done because he was gay. Too full of themselves by far!

I feel badly for his parents and hope that their friends and family and church gathers around them to shield and comfort them from the vultures out there.

Seriously? Seriously? How about let's put up some video of you having a private sexual encounter on the Internet without your knowledge and see if you think it's "just a prank." The problem has always been with people like you who find some way to blame the victim and diminish the culpability of the perpetrator.
C'mon--anyone who is enough of a freaking pervert to become this overly obsessed with someone else's sex life that they want to videotape it and broadcast is a sexual predator in the making.
These freaks need to go to jail.

Do me a favor. Set up a webcam and let me broadcast your wife or sister getting undressed. Just a harmless prank, after all. Maybe I'll put it on a live feed to her job? Maybe your family can watch? How about the neighbors? Still think it's just a prank?

I'm with you-how hate crimes, by definition, are "motivated by bias against one or more of the types above, or of their derivatives.". If this were truly a hate crime, there would have been a lot more gay bashing heard.

Last time I checked homosexuality is against the laws of NJ. Not that I agree with that, but it is what it is.

you can completely have sex in your dorm room. when did you come up with this imaginary rule? 18+ are adults and able to have sex. surprise, when i was in college the 21 year olds even drank beer!

You certainly cannot invite men you met off the net into your dorm room. That would open up the university to a lot of liability if they did allow such a thing.
