About Korea Cup International Yacht Race (2010)

Korea Cup International Yacht Race, now in its third year, has already become one of the premier regattas in Asia.  With approximately 60 boats and 20 countries expected to participate in this year's regatta, and with a greatly expanded inshore race class, it promises to be one of the most challenging and exciting international yachting events in this part of the world.

Korea is relatively new to the yachting world.  In order to promote yachting and to rapidly develop this emerging industry in Korea, the national and local governmental agencies have recently provided generous support for regattas.  More and more corporations are now sponsoring these events, as well.  As direct beneficiaries of such generous support and sponsorship, sailors are ever grateful for the opportunity to race in the Korea Cup International Yacht Race.

The offshore portion of the Korea Cup International Yacht Race has special significance to Korean sailors.  As the race course includes the circling of a tiny Korean rock island known as Dokdo, which is located farthest east from the Korean Penninsula in the East Sea, it is an opportunity for them to make an ocean pilgrimage to an historic piece of Korean territory that is near and dear to their hearts.

This year, the offshore portion of the regatta also includes the Ulleung Island Race, which is in front of one of the most scenic islands of Korea, located between Dokdo and the east coast of Korea.  While the offshore races are taking place from May 21 through May 26, the inshore races will take place at Uljin (in front of Hoopo Beach) from May 20 through May 23.  To add excitement to the overall regatta, on the first day of the inshore race (on May 20), the offshore class will also join the race as a warm-up to their offshore race.

With numerous cash prizes, trophies and dinner parties planned for this year's races, along with  recorded television broadcasts of the races by MBC, the organizers are ready to host the best ever regatta in Korea.
