A glimpse into the life of the 'Fukushima 50'

Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency has released eerie pictures of workers known as the "Fukushima 50" who are risking their lives exposed to dangerous levels of radiation to try to stabilise a power plant and prevent a nuclear disaster becoming a catastrophe.

The Fukushima Daiichi plant was badly damaged in the earthquake and tsunami that knocked out vital cooling systems, causing radiation leaks. The pictures show engineers conducting cooling operations, connecting power lines, collecting data from the control room and inspecting gauges.

Known as the "Fukushima 50" because the workers rotate into the plant in groups of 50, there are in fact thought to be about 200 people at the plant. In one hour, they are exposed to radiation levels much higher than the amount a typical worker might be exposed in their entire career.

  • I think there used to be images on this page but while the content changes around the same topic, the comments stay with the topic and appear with the new content. It's great that some of us has the attitude "I would do it" - when it comes to a real-life situation and to making a choice between your life (and your family's need of you) and the health of the area population, it's a very tough one. I have said this before, but I did find this video on youtube so amazing.... watch it because it helps to understand what Dave-bob is talking about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogE3DTRkpq4
  • You are absolutely correct. They have more than likely done some damage to their health and it effect their future a great deal. Let's hope that it stops on that level (not counting the unlucky few who stepped into the radioactive water - their health is already greatly effected).
  • I would volunteer to do this, it is a good and honorable death, to safe the plant, and millions of people all over the islands.

Are there supposed to be pictures on this page?
  • The"50" personnel rotating in hourly basis to mitigate a more worse scenario at Fukhisima Power Plant should be given commendation by the Japanese government. They riskiing their future too having been exposed to severe radiation limits in behalf of their people.
