Operation Backpacks for Japan:
Kids helping Kids!
The Scouts of Camp Zama, Japan: Camp Zama Girl Scouts, Cub Scout Pack #34, Boy Scout Troop #34 are organizing the collection and assembling of comfort backpacks. Our event will continue through the voluntary departure process, and the packs will be delivered!
Our mission is to provide comfort and a message of love to the kids of Japan who have lost everything in the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. We will distribute the packs after transportation and mail delivery becomes available in the affected areas. Members of our community are in Sendai, Japan, directly helping with relief efforts. The will personally help distribute the backpacks for our Scouts.
We will include a short note letting our Japanese friends know about all the people involved and where the donations originated. Join us!
We will collect packs & items until 30 April 2011.
Please contact us at zamagirlscouts@gmail.com if you have any questions.
Items can be mailed to:

Here are some ideas on how your Family, Unit, Troop, Den, Group can help:
1,000 Cranes
Thousand Origami Cranes is a group of one thousand origami paper cranes held together by strings. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. The crane in Japan is one of the mystical or holy creatures, and is said to live for a thousand years. In Japan, it is commonly said that folding 1000 paper origami cranes makes a person's wish come true.
We would like to string as many cranes as possible to send throughout Japan!
This is great inexpensive project that can be done indoors.
If you do not have access to origami paper, make your own!
- 10" square paper is good for younger children.
- 6" square paper is standard.
- 3" square paper if for expert origami folders.
Visit http://www.en.origami-club.com/traditional/crane/index.html
for instructions on how to make a paper crane.
We will include a note with each set of 1,000 cranes to let our Japanese friends know where the cranes were made.
