If you take the murders in the UK that were committed by Jamaicans and Asians away from the statistics, you would find that the UK is still very crime free. I suspect given the issues in Toronto with the same immigrant group, the Canadian statistics would look way better. MALES commit 90% of violent crime and out of the 10% of the women that do, males are their victim most often so I would have to ask, what did the male do to provoke his death? In many cities in the USA, Canada, UK the people are afraid to go out after dark. Crime is rampant. Indians wave degrees and phoney references, but the families of the fakers, their offspring etc. will all fall into the above catagories. They should stay where they are and try to fix their own countries, not take what we have built over generations. Switzerland requires each citizen to keep his military issued rifle in his home after service. This, among other factors, keeps the crime rate (and possibility of another holocaust) low. |

This site is a great idea and could become a Wikipedia for sociologists or just the curious. The only problem is that they're using data from a UN report 10 years old. If they actually did any sort of work, they would find the US crime rate is at historic lows, which during the toughest recession since the great depression has law enforcement baffled.As someone mentioned where is Brazil or South Africa? Mexico is facing terrible crime and have lost 28,000 cops and civilians in the last 2 years alone. It almost makes want to create a statistical site of my own with current data. This site is pretty useless. |

It isn't the prevalence of guns that makes the murder rate so high. The murders in the US primarily happen in places where legal gun ownership it outlawed. Like NYC and Detroit and Chicago. If the genders of the murderers were made known, we would find one thing in common for them, almost all of them are male but at least most of their victims are also male. If the police do not have any ideal of who murdered someone, they always have a better chance of finding the murderer when they look for someone with testicles. Look at Juarez, Mexico vs El Paso, Texas, which is in effect one large city, the people on both sides are the same and Spanish is dominant on both sides of the border, many rich people move to el Paso but many more of the most poor cross illegally. If you go to either side you will notice that the populations are identical. Juarez has a murder rate of 120/100,000 and effective total gun ban, El Paso has a murder rate of 2.12/100,000 and almost no restriction on gun ownership except that criminals can’t buy or possess guns. The gun control policy of el Paso is serving the city well while in Juarez it appears to be a total failure. Gun control advocates seem to think that it is the gun control that determines crime levels, therefore, to avoid being hypocrites you must admit that the gun control policy of Juarez and El Paso have shaped the crime rates in those cities because the populations are highly mixing and very similar. The question is, why does a poor person in Juarez take up a gun (when it is illegal) and use it for illegal purposes, while the same guy might cross the border illegally later and own a gun legally and never use it for illegal purposes? |

SA stats aren't close to right. The police and government don't really like to reveal the real crime stats, and in fact regularly fail to do proper paperwork on any crime most especially including murder. Just last year they classified a farmer who had been shot several times by his workers as "accidental death", and several more reports similar to this one appeared at that time and were then quickly hushed-up again. Some huge cities in the "evil" United States such as San Diego, San Jose and El Paso (1.3 million, 1 million, 800,000 population respectively) have fewer than 15 murders per year, making them the safest large cities on earth. There are many US cities that are some of the safest cities on earth. Sorry if this fails to perpetuate the anti-American communist agenda, but it's a statistical fact. Keep in mind most the US actually overestimates the crime rate. Cities like London and even Toronto today make New York City look like Disneyland. |

Why are these figures so old? I am US citizen living in South AFrica and based on information from various sources, I do not believe the difference in the US and S Africa is so great, particularly for some cities in the US. NZ should be in a worse place than that, our crime is out of control. We have more murders than that we have around 1-2 a week here. (thats the start there is a whole lot of other crime here, read nz herald thats all we have is crime in the paper) The justice system is a disgrace, you get 8-10 years here for murder..and the murder of kids here is appalling, do not raise a family here. Guns are not the issue. It is illegal to own a gun in almost every country in the top 10. Contrary - most Swiss males have guns (military assault weapons) - but don't kill people with them. And yes poverty is likely the problem, but there is almost no poverty in the US ("poor" people have cars, cell phones, nice clothes, eat out often, and are mostly overweight), so likely greed is a better answer. |

These statistics are like all other crime statistics. They only reflect that which is reported. Not all countries have police who actually find and arrest the murderers. In many countries, the police are bought off. Secondly, if America banned all guns, the criminals would have no deterrence from robbing, raping and killing the law abiding American citizens. The criminals will find their guns. Ask Daniel from Mexico. All you America bashers are simply jealous. Perhaps you should take a look around and become a bit more informed. Being able to speak more than one language is admirable, but that alone does not make you more intelligent OR civilized. To the gentleman in Pakistan, it isn't Americans who blow t6hemselves up hoping to meet Allah along with 72 virgins. It's Pakistanis, Afghans, Saudis, Jordanians, Egyptians and others in that region who hide behind women and children while trying to shoot American soldiers. This list looks weird. I checked my country's data and in 2008 in Poland there were 759 murders per 38 million people. That's around 0,02 per 1000 (0,01971 if you consider an exact number of people). |

I saw someone blaming wealth distribution in South Africa. That's hardly the case. The scandinavian countries are famous for their wealth distribution, and are all at the bottom of the statistics. Crime is mainly caused by poverty. Wealth distribution done right, prevents poverty, thus preventing crime. Poverty makes people desperate, causing crime. |

Nation Master needs to update the stats. In 2005, Trinidad and Tobago, with a population of a little over 1m (1,070,000 according to the CIA Factbook) had 387 murders or 0.362 per 1,000. Up to March 2006, there have already been 110 murders in T&T, a trend that will eclipse the record 387 set last year. |
