Mum at last speaks with son in Japan

MARY Briffa could not help but cry when she finally heard the voice of her son Jason who's been caught up in the Japanese earthquake and tsunami disaster.

Jason, 25, was working as an English teacher in Sendai when it was ravaged by a 10m tsunami on Friday.

Ms Briffa, from Point Cook in Melbourne's southwest, had heard reports that her son was safe and well but she refused to get her hopes up until she had spoken to him herself.

That finally happened on Tuesday in a short, two-minute conversation before his mobile phone went dead.

"I couldn't help but cry," Ms Briffa said.

"It was just so overwhelming, so exciting. I got to hear his voice."

She said Jason was helping villagers begin the massive task of cleaning up their town and staying at the school where he worked.

"I'm so proud of him," Ms Briffa said.

"He could try his best to get out of there but instead he is staying around to give them a hand."

Because the conversation was cut short she still doesn't know when her son will be heading home.

"But he said he'll come as soon as he can," Ms Briffa said.
