Magna CEO says Japanese workers at nuclear plant ‘projecting business as usual’ but says it is ‘unclear if they are healthy due to the high level of radiation at the reactor, which is life-threatening.’
The CEO of the Israeli company that installed the security system at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant said Thursday that those workers who have elected to stay behind are “putting their lives on the line” to save Japan.
Magna BSP set up the security system about a year ago at the facility, which suffered extensive damage after the recent earthquake and tsunami, with particular concern over radiation leakage from the reactors at the site.

The system includes cameras and a warning system, enabling the facility’s security staff to monitor anyone attempting to trespass onto the site or damage the perimeter fence. The security system was designed to guard the plant against any hostile elements seeking to seize radioactive material to use in a terrorist attack.
Among the 50 Japanese workers who have remained at Fukushima amid the unfolding crisis, in an effort to bring the facility under control, are two individuals who were in Israel about three weeks ago, where they underwent training to transfer the operation of the security system to the Japanese themselves.
“We still haven’t been able to make contact with them, either by phone or e-mail,” Magna CEO Haim Siboni said yesterday. “We know they’re alive, but it’s not clear if they are healthy due to the high level of radiation at the reactor, which is life-threatening.”
“The Japanese workers who have remained at the reactor are really putting their lives on the line, with the knowledge that they’re doing it to save all of Japan,” he added.
Although there is no access to the area, Siboni said the cameras from his company’s security system – which were installed high up – were probably not damaged and likely captured the post-earthquake explosions at the site, as well as the impact of the tsunami.
Magna BSP was established by Siboni about 10 years ago and is owned by several partners. Based in Dimona, the firm employs 15 people, a number which Siboni expects to expand dramatically in light of additional orders Magna has received from Japan and interest shown by the operators of nuclear reactors in other countries. Its operations in Japan are conducted through a Japanese government firm.
“We have an agreement in principle with the Japanese that we will provide protection for all of the country’s nuclear reactors,” Siboni said.
Magna had planned to send additional security equipment to Japan next week. The Japanese have not asked that the shipment be halted, Siboni said, adding: “They are projecting business as usual.”

The Arava-based Magna BSP company, which specializes in producing and installing stereoscopic sensory and thermal imaging cameras, had been contracted to place cameras around one of the plant’s six cores – the core that has been experiencing explosions and overheating.
Speaking to The Jerusalem Post on Monday, Magna’s head, Haim Siboni, said the thermal cameras also had the ability to detect the presence of radioactive clouds in the air, but added that Magna had not been able to gain access to the images recorded by the cameras at this time.
“Because we are using these special cameras, we can also identify radioactive clouds, due to the spectrum that our cameras can sense,” Siboni said.
Although Magna is able to gain remote access to its computer system, which receives the cameras’ images, Siboni said his company had not yet been authorized to do so.
“We have not been allowed to take control remotely yet,” Siboni said.
Magna has been asked to secure a second core at the Fukushima plant in the near future.

Hydrogen is produced by the generators in Power Stations, although they are sealed no system is perfect, when atmospheric moisture enters the system the highly charged environment immediately reduces the water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, which is why turbine halls are large well ventilated structures.
On humid days condensation gathers on outside of the generators, the constituent droplets absorb the raw hydrogen and oxygen which accumulate and drip into the lower reaches under the generators, whence when the air drys they evaporate and the absorbed hydrogen rises into deckhead spaces under the generators.
Occasionally similarly trapped hydrogen gas will be ignited and a minor explosion takes place, as the hydrogen atoms each combine with two oxygen atoms to produce water, and unless extra material is either flung around or is set on fire or detonated by the initial blast, there is no shrapnel and no smoke.
In a nuclear reactor uranium fuel rods that remain stable in correct storage, are put together to make a “nuclear pile” which will increase in temperature exponentially of its own volition, unless cooled or separated.

In a meltdown the flow of coolant delivered to the reactor core is interrupted, which unless the pile is reduced and the system isolated, becomes a run away or uncontrolled process that leads to meltdown, the welds the heat exchangers get over stressed and crack.
Makes a soup of radioactive and non radioactive liquid sodium and high pressure steam, the resultant explosion reduces the reactor to wreckage, and releases a cloud of highly radioactive steam into the atmosphere, at no time is a mushroom cloud produced like the one in the shot.

LONG BEACH, California — A German computer security expert said Thursday he believes the United States and Israel’s Mossad unleashed the malicious Stuxnet worm on Iran’s nuclear program.
“My opinion is that the Mossad is involved,” Ralph Langner said while discussing his in-depth Stuxnet analysis at a prestigious TED conference in the Southern California city of Long Beach.
“But, the leading source is not Israel… There is only one leading source, and that is the United States.”
There has been widespread speculation Israel was behind the Stuxnet worm that has attacked computers in Iran, and Tehran has blamed the Jewish state and the United States for the killing of two nuclear scientists in November and January.
“The idea behind Stuxnet computer worm is really quite simple,” Langner said. “We don’t want Iran to get the bomb.”
The malicious code was crafted to stealthily take control of valves and rotors at an Iranian nuclear plant, according to Langner.
“It was engineered by people who obviously had inside information,” he explained. “They probably also knew the shoe size of the operator.”
Stuxnet targets computer control systems made by German industrial giant Siemens and commonly used to manage water supplies, oil rigs, power plants and other critical infrastructure.
“The idea here is to circumvent digital data systems, so the human operator could not get there fast enough,” Langner said.
“When digital safety systems are compromised, really bad things can happen — your plant can blow up.
Most Stuxnet infections have been discovered in Iran, giving rise to speculation it was intended to sabotage nuclear facilities there. The worm was crafted to recognize the system it was to attack.
The New York Times reported in January that US and Israeli intelligence services collaborated to develop the computer worm to sabotage Iran’s efforts to make a nuclear bomb.
Russia called on NATO in January to launch an investigation into the computer worm that targeted a Russian-built Iranian nuclear power plant, saying the incident could have triggered a new Chernobyl.
Russia’s envoy to NATO in January said Stuxnet caused centrifuges producing enriched uranium at the Bushehr plant to spin out of control, which could have sparked a new “Chernobyl tragedy,” the 1986 nuclear meltdown in Ukraine.
“The operators saw on their screens that the centrifuges were working normally when in fact they were out of control,” Dmitry Rogozin told reporters after meeting with ambassadors from the 28-nation Western alliance.
Russia is helping Iran build a nuclear power plant in the southern city of Bushehr for civilian use.
Langner said the Stuxnet code was designed to trick human operators by showing them recorded readings indicating machinery is running normally while behind the scenes they are heading for destruction.
“It’s definitely hard-core sabotage,” Langner said of Stuxnet. “It’s like in the movies where during a heist the security camera is running pre-recorded video showing nothing is wrong.”
Iran’s envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency has denied that the Stuxnet attack effected the country’s nuclear program, including Bushehr.
A terrifying aspect of Stuxnet, according to Langner, is that it is a generic attack that would work well in factories, power plants, or other operations plentiful in the United States.
“It’s a cyber weapon of mass destruction,” Langner said. “We’d better start preparing right now.”

I have long criticized Japan’s use of nuclear power, and it is well known that they have plenty of nuclear materials from the reactors themselves that could quickly be converted into launch worthy nuclear missiles. Some Japanese politicians have said Japan should become a normal country and adopt nuclear weapons.
Japan’s nuclear industry has a long and sordid history of negligence and corner cutting. Did the Israelis play a role in getting this very old plant an extension of use when it was supposed to be decommissioned (I believe this is true but don’t have a link on hand) in March of 2011? Certainly not directly but perhaps in a general way, that could be, or more probably plain old fashioned human greed and stupidity played a part.
