Every household in Taiji, Japan has received a free copy of the documentary The Cove courtesy of director Louie Psihoyos. In a bid to raise awareness about the brutal annual slaughter of thousands of dolphins, the 3,500 residents of Taiji were sent Japanese language DVDs versions of the Oscar-winning film.
Each year, thousands of dolphins are herded into a clandestine cove were a few of the creatures are captured and sold to trainers for use in aquariums and other dolphin attractions. Trainers and buyers fly in from around the world to hand pick their favourite dolphins and are willing to pay US$100,000 (€73,000) for certain dolphin species. The rest of the dolphins are brutally hacked and/or stabbed to death.
