Largest planet in the solar system could be about to be  discovered - and it's up to four times the size of Jupiter

Scientists believe they may have found a new planet in the far reaches of the solar system, up to four times the mass of Jupiter.

Its orbit would be thousands of times further from the Sun than the Earth's - which could explain why it has so far remained undiscovered.

Data which could prove the existence of Tyche, a gas giant in the outer Oort Cloud, is set to be released later this year - although some believe proof has already been garnered by Nasa with its pace telescope, Wise, and is waiting to be pored over.

Prof Daniel Whitmire from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette believes the data may prove Tyche's existence within two years.

He told the Independent: 'If it does, [fellow astrophysicist Prof John Matese] and I will be doing cartwheels. And that's not easy at our age.'

He added he believes it will mainly be made of hydrogen and helium, with an atmosphere like Jupiter's, with spots and rings and clouds, adding: 'You'd also expect it to have moons. All the outer planets have them.'

He believes the planet is so huge, it will ahve a raised temperature left from its formation that will make it far higher than others, such as Pluto, at -73C, as 'it takes an object this size a long time to cool off'.

Isolated: The Oort Cloud, where Tyche is believed to be, is a sphere with a radius of one light year

He and Prof Matese first suggested Tyche existed because of the angle comets were arriving, with a fifth of the expected number since 1898 entering higher than expected.

However, Tyche - if it exists - should also dislodge comets closer to home, from the  inner Oort Cloud, but they have not been seen.

If confirmed, the status and name of the new planet - which would become the ninth and potentially the largest - would then have to be agreed by the International Astronomical Union.

Currently named Tyche, from the Greek goddess that governed the destiny of a city, its name may have to change, as it originated from a theory which has now been largely abandoned.

@ Mr.Derbyshire: Stitchin if anythin should gain "more" credibility. U do realize that NASA themselves has been "looking for "planet X" (Aka Nibiru). Mainstream articles just always lead to it always never being found so doesn't exist. Event though it WAS found in the 80s n any amateur should know that the article released then was redacted out of no where. There is always SOME GRAIN of truth to legends. (also is in the bible.) Just like water; first its only here; then its there. When they already knew it was everywhere. Common folk hardly do anything for advancing the human race Mr. Derby other then crawl. Try n remember its usually the crazies that do the leaps. Always crazy before proven and vindicated. (if at all). Again, this adds credibility to Stitchin; because he among a few are the VERY reasons they have been looking for it "Intentionally". This isnt some o btw discovery. What about all the doubters saying such a planet "Cant" exist n doesn't. O look Suddenly there it IS! o.0

Isn't anything that we learn in our lives cut and pasted from somewhere, usually the indoctrination...err I mean education system that is mandatory for all of us? - Kyle Suchan, Newark, Ohio, 15/2/2011 12:43 ================ No. Next question? ============= I can't speak for your education system, but when I went to school we were taught to think and we were given an understanding of e.g. science. Simply cutting pasting from a random website that appears to be releavnt exhibits nothing other than that - the ability to use google and to cut & paste. The poster I respnded to uses excatly the same tactics when arguing against evolution, without ever exhibitng any comprehension of the science. ======== Perhaps, as I said earlier, your eductaion system is rtaher inferior to ours, but even so, surely you can see the difference between the ability to cut & paste and having an udnerstanding of the science? No? Well maybe your system is worse than I thought.

---the lower mass limit is somewhat arbitrary as there is no obvious point of transition between a high-mass planet and a low-mass brown dwarf. - Teddy Robbear, Scotland============== I googled this impressive sounding phrase, and lo and behold, it's a straight cut&paste job from and internet site. As`are the bulk of his other posts on this page. Which is want you would expect from someone who uses 'science' to argue that Evolution doesn't happen, without ever providing any science to back up his claims. Scientific illiteracy is the hallmark of his posts. And now, to add to his weird Creationist claims, he's also bought into the whole nonsense about 'NIbiru'. Is there no limit to the abosulte nonsense one mind is prepared to believe? Isn't anything that we learn in our lives cut and pasted from somewhere, usually the indoctrination...err I mean education system that is mandatory for all of us?

Despite the cynics out there, one has to admit that it is rather curious that such a discovery (or possible discovery) is being announced now, in these times of world upheaval. - CD, Bristol, UK, 15/2/2011 9:56 ========= So let me play the 'cynic' and look at your post. 'These times of world upheaval'. So perhaps you can tell us when there was a time when the world wasn't in upheaval? What we are witnessing now in terms of politics etc. is business as usual. Revolution and change are the norm, and have been for the past few centuries. As for why it's being announced now: well it was actually announced a few months ago, but the DM didn't pick it up.The WISE satellite was only launched in December 2009, in order to map areas like this. It's doing its job, for goodness sake! ========== I don't think it's being 'cynical' to reject the inevitable crackpot conspiracy theory which is triggered by every new discovery. But then I'm not paranoid.

This is it folks! this is the one they had the global moratorium on, they will now be feeding us more info on it , as & when, they see we are fit to know more. DR Karl Radio 5 (up all night), mentioned this last Wed/Thurs 0455 am, don't believe me? check out the pod cast on BBC radio 5 website for last week.

Before you go blathering on about Nibiru and the marvelous alleged "discoveries" that await us in 2012, see the webpage, "sitchiniswrong" where a real Sumerian expert, wherein Sitchin is revealed as a truly deluded crank. - bostonEddie, Boston, MA USA, 14/2/2011 ===================== Nice try Eddie, but not a chance! You really expect people to take the trouble to find out the basic errors in Sitchin's nonsense, and ruin their conspiracy theories? That won't happen here I'm afraid. Don't you understand that nothing can be taken at face value? And that all scientists are involved in a massive conspiracy to hide the truth from us 'sheeple'? ================= Paranoia rules. Goodness knows how these poor deluded souls sleep at night. Thanks for trying to bring some sanity to something which is just another piece of information adding to our knowledge of the solar system.
