The book
So this is it, the book. I was incredibly fortunate in picking up a publishing deal while I was on my journey. I realise how difficult it is to get such a thing so in the first instance I’d like to thank Karen at Harper Collins Australia who got in contact while I was in India.
I remember in vividly. Arriving in a town called Kuajarho – the home of erotic temples – finding a cheap place to stay in a hotel overlooking a lake, having a shower and then heading out into the town to have a look around.
I got harassed by some kids trying to sell mangos, bought some water, then found a small internet cafe over the road. That’s where I read the email and almost fell off my chair. It was great news, coming at a great time, it really lifted my spirits and further along the line would give me some focus and a new challenge the day the riding was finally done.
How Karen came to hear of the story is because of some postcards I had made and printed up in Bangkok.
They had this picture on the front;
Which is of me and Dot riding in the Bali volcano. I had 80 postcards printed and sent them to every media outlet and magazine I could think of. My hope was that I’d get the opportunity to write about my trip and in return receive some payment because by this point the money was running low.
I had a few things come of it. Radio 1 and 2 read out my postcard saying ‘hi from Thailand’. I think a few newspaper printed something as well, one in particular being the Sydney Morning Herald who I’d been in contact a few times, with it taking this postcard to jolt them into allowing me to write a 500 word piece of the trip, giving an update on the journey so far. I wrote that in Bangkok, sent it off, carried on with my trip and some time around India it was printed.
By chance Karen happened to be reading the Motoring section in which it was printed and saw potential in the English chap riding across the world on a postie bike. The rest as they say is history.
For the time being it’s only going to be available in Australia. Hopefully later down the line an English publisher will pick it up and bring it here. Fingers crossed. In the meantime I’ll be able to individually post out copies to anyone who might want one, wherever they are in the world.
With postage and what not they’re going to be about twenty English pounds, which I know is a bit steep but if it’s any consolation they’ll be signed by me and Dot. They’ll be thirty English pounds if you only want them signed by Dot as I know she is everyone’s favourite.
Still working out the details of the ordering process, but in the meantime if you could register your details on the form below it’ll give me some idea of how many copies I’ll need to order in.
All the best.
Nate and Dot.
