POPSWhy Meditators May Live Longer After the three-month intervention, researchers found that the meditators had on average about 30%* more activity of the enzyme telomerase than the controls did. Telomerase is responsible for repairing telomeres, the structures located on the ends chromosomes, which, like the plastic aglets at the tips of shoelaces, prevent the chromosome from unraveling. Each time a cell reproduces, its telomeres become shorter and less effective at protecting the chromosome — this, researchers believe, is a cause of aging. As the chromosome becomes more and more vulnerable, cell copying becomes sloppier and eventually stops when the telomeres disintegrate completely. Telomerase can mitigate — and possibly stop — cell aging. Read more: http://healthland.time.com/2010/12/23/could-meditation-extend-life-intriguing-possibility-raised-by-new-study/#ixzz1AfcJCNyT

POPSHole Punch Clouds Something to keep an eye out for (and maybe a camera too) if, like many people, you live near an airport; airplanes are thought to be the specific disruptor of the balance and stability of the ice crystals, spawning these formations.

POPSAnatomy Physiology of Thyroid Gland The function of the gland is to make the thyroid hormone, thyroxine. When the gland is looked at under a microscope, many small ‘follicles’ can be seen; these are islands of tissue containing collections of colloid, a protein substance to which thyroid hormone is bound and from which it can be released by enzymes.

POPSThe future of the book Print media such as newspapers and books would seem to be on the way out. Why bother to lug heavy tomes around when there are e.books? Marius Huegli and Martin Kovacovsky posed a different question: why not combine the best of both worlds?

POPSMaj. Hasan, Jared Loughner and the Media "In the hours after the attack, little was known about Loughner beyond some bizarre and largely incomprehensible YouTube postings that, if anything, suggested he was mentally ill. Yet the network that had shown such caution in discussing the Ft. Hood shootings openly discussed the possibility that Loughner was inspired to violence by…Sarah Palin." POPSLeftist blog points finger at Palin, while scrubbing 'dead to me' rant of representatives with "a bull's-eye on their district" for being a "bad apple" Democrat. The "dead to me" diary has since been deleted from Daily Kos, while Moulitsas' "target list" is still viewable. Police have named and apprehended 22-year-old Tucson resident Jared L. Loughner as the perpetrator of yesterday's massacre, making it highly unlikely that "BoyBlue" is also the shooter. The Daily Kos diary writer identifies himself as a "gay" man whose wife left him last year and who suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face. BoyBlue also appeared on the blog again today, issuing an apology to "this site, the victims and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords." "Most of you know by now my diary bemoaning Rep. Giffords' voting against Nancy Pelosi has been taken by the far right to preemptively protect themselves," Boy Blue writes of his now-scrubbed, previous post. "I made a VERY poor choice of words when I partially titled the diary, 'now dead to me,'" he continues.

POPSThe Censorship of Madmen There was only so much I could clip but the article speaks to the very thing I fear....the oppression of the opposition via infused association. People who commit such serious and senseless crime have no sense; they are delusional. Sane people of many political persuasions can disagree all day long (especially Americans!!!) and still allow freedom of thinking and speech. To seek to silence sane people for having an opposing opinion or a different idea of governance is oppression. Americans are not each others' enemies...if they seek to have a rational, law-abiding, Constitution-adhering, civil Government.

POPS Jared Loughner: Anti-Semitic or Anti-Government? “I have no idea where the DHS came up with AR being Anti-Semitic or anti-ZOG, you will not find anything that is Anti-Semitic in our publications. The DHS saying that AR is anti-ZOG or even using the word ZOG makes me wonder how much they looked at our site, it doesn’t say much about the DHS.” A search of their website pulls up only two times that the word ZOG is used. Both are articles re-posted by other sites explaining the meaning of the word and one of those articles is from FOX News. http://www.amren.com/news/news04/06/11/reaganimmig.html When I asked if the suspected shooter Jared Loughner was connected to AR, Mr. Taylor explained, “We have checked the archives and lists of people that have been to our conventions and have no record whatsoever of the name Jared Loughner anywhere. He may have posted comments in our website using a screen name, but there is nothing with the name Jared Loughner.” more... http://bit.ly/eGBPDf http://familysecuritymatters.org

POPSLas Vegas Real Estate: It's a Desert! I don't know about the 2032 prediction. But unemployment is high in Nevada. I think an economic recovery will lift all boats, but it may be awhile until we see higher employment that leads to rising wages. And that's what we need to bring out home buyers looking to move up.

POPS Obama's $5-A-Gallon Gas Just Ahead »?Even before the cause of the Deepwater Horizon disaster was known, Obama imposed a six-month moratorium on deep-water drilling in the Gulf of Mexico that cost thousands of jobs and effectively ended drilling in both deep and shallow waters there. Although officially lifted, slow-walking federal bureaucrats have yet to approve new permits and are busily issuing costly new requirements that are certain to stifle most, if not all, drilling in the Gulf for years to come. A third of America's oil production comes from wells in the Gulf. »?Reversed a Bush administration decision that opened millions of acres of public lands in the western parts of the nation to careful oil and natural gas exploration and development, then invented an entirely new classification that puts those and millions more acres not previously covered off limits. »?Appointed an energy secretary -- Steven Chu -- who said in December 2008 that Americans should pay the same prices as Europeans for gas.

POPSGOP Plays Games With Health Care Disclosures While the measure was largely symbolic by its own right, it illustrates the fundamental hypocrisy fueling the current crop of Republicans. They've had no issue campaigning on distortions and flat out lies concerning the new health care law and relentlessly push the these of shrinking the size of federal subsidies. Yet almost ever single one of them takes every federal benefit available to them.
