optical ps/2 mouse cursor not moving

Windows XP

plugged it in before turning on the pc etc and the left and right clicks are working, the optical red 'light' reacts by shining brighter when the mouse is moved, but the cursor on screen doesnt move.

Optical mice require a textured surface to work correctly. Also, not reflective. That is why there are mouse pads.

thats not a problem. i used other mice before on the same surface and they worked without problem. this one doesnt.

Well, maybe the mouse is defective then.
