Dodgers vs. Phillies beanball debate misses the point

October 13, 2008 | 11:49 am

Shane Victorino protests a Hiroki Kuroda pitch while Russell Martin stands by.

After the Dodgers' 7-2 victory over the Phillies Sunday night, discussion focused on the third-inning pitch Hiroki Kuroda fired over the head of Shane Victorino.

Victorino was furious that Kuroda's pitch was targeted at his head, and he wouldn't let the point go, gesturing repeatedly that it wasn't right to throw at a batter's head. Fine. That's a legitimate point. I've always thought beanballs were senseless too.

But focusing all of the attention on Kuroda's pitch misses the point: Where was the accountability on the part of the Phillies' pitchers? The pitch Clay Condrey threw at Russell Martin in the second inning Sunday was a much more dangerous pitch than Kuroda's at Victorino.

Had Martin not gotten out of the way of a fast ball coming in on him, he'd be in the hospital today with a shattered cheekbone or collapsed eye socket. Had Victorino not moved, the pitch would have sailed well over his head.

But no one afterward was talking about that pitch at Martin ... or, for that matter, about the pitch behind Manny Ramirez's head in Game 2. Check the news conferences with Joe Torre and Charley Manual (click on "Dodgers Drop Phillies").

Victorino's outrage was understandable but only if he had an equal sense of right or wrong about what his teammates had done with their head hunting.

throwing a beanball is petty no mater the circ. it a crook of you know what

Oh, so Condrey meant to load the bases after getting an 0-2 count? Mike, I think you need to learn the game

LA is going to lose the series plain and simple... Cry all you want. LA does not deserve to win..Your fans come to the game during the 3rd Inning and leave by the 8th.

Hey Tom,

The only reason LA fans leave early is they don't want to wait to boo Santa or throw batteries at someone.

Hey There
Too bad LA Fans are front runners. That pitch was going to hit Victorino's head and the Phillies pitched inside to their hitters all season long and barely hit batters for all the times they pitched inside. So if you want to complain that your team is losing dont be such a crybaby. And Martin is a huge crybaby, who complains and does not move out of the way and to get hit by a 70mph change up. I personally think this "Manny" bs is nothing but bs. He is the only player on your team and thats why your team is losing. And how sweet is it that Victorino got the game tying home run at the end of game 4.

Why are the LA fans and Dodgers so sensitive? Maybe they haven't watched a 162 game season because they are too busy eating sushi and trying so hard to be someone else. This is baseball. Inside pitching is part of the game and who the heck do the Dodgers think they are that they can't be pitched inside or god for bid, hit with a pitch. Stop crying, oh you can't after your boy Shane ripped out your hearts last night. Don't mess with Philly, stick to sushi and sunglasses at night
