13 reasons your Facebook account will be disabled

4 Jun 2009 (Thu)

ACCORDING TO THOR MULLER, there are 13 things that (supposedly) will get you kicked off Facebook (thanks, Jean :) ) :

  1. You didn’t use your real name. Facebook will find you and spit you out.
  2. You joined too many groups. (The maximum limit is 200 groups per user.)
  3. You posted too many messages on a wall or in a group. E.g. Guy Kawasaki had his account disabled–in his case for “excessive evangelism.”
  4. You posted in too many groups, too many user’s walls. (That’s what spammers do, silly.)
  5. You friended too many people. (Not so long ago this was a prime cause of disabled accounts, but Facebook has instituted a maximum of 5000 friends that should protect you from yourself.)
  6. Your school/organization affiliation is doubtful.
  7. You’re poking too many people. (Beware the odd FB app that pokes on your behalf.)
  8. You advertised your app on wall posts.
  9. You used duplicate text in multiple messages.
  10. You are a cow, dog, or library.
  11. You are under 18 years old and not part of a High School group.
  12. You wrote offensive content.
  13. You scraped information off Facebook. E.g. Facebook bots disabled Robert Scoble’s account.

ACCORDING TO MARI SMITH, here are more possible reasons your account may be deactivated:

  1. You send “too many” friend requests in one day/session.
  2. You make “too many” wall posts in one day/session – especially with verbatim content and with links.
  3. You copy and paste the same friend request message “too many” times.
  4. You send too many identical emails to individual friends and/or friend lists*.
  5. You message your Group members “too many” times.
  6. You message your Event invitees “too many” times.

.
Recommended action steps:

  1. Take your time to build up a strategic network of friends on Facebook. Focus on quality, not quantity.
  2. Send no more than approximately 20 new friend requests at any one time. Also, be sure to mix up the friend request messages.
  3. Use your own opt-in email system.
  4. Build out your Facebook Page.
  5. Include Facebook in your overall marketing strategy. Don’t put all your social networking “eggs” in one basket. Build up a following on Twitter, FriendFeed, Plaxo, LinkedIn, etc.
  6. Remember there was life before Facebook.

How can Facebook find out that a person hasn’t given his real name?

I am not a big fan of Face Book. It seems to me that people waste their time without doing anything. However, the owner of this site has already earned huge amount of money. I think they will try to increase a lot of users. I am totally against of it.

Oww.. Means FB really doesnt want poser.. (who does?) hehehehehe

Anyway, Thank you for this informative article!

I totally agree that Facebook can be a great way to add a little help to your website or business, but by no means should you depend on Facebook to be your only way of getting the word out. And the more your account appears to be a spam robot, the more likely you are to get deleted. That should be pretty obvious. Besides, who really has 5000 friends? Yeah, no one…

But most of the users will be reluctant to reveal their identities. So i think facebook should not be too serious in harping this.

i even think 5000 friends is ridiculous. There should be another name if you have that many…not “friends” but maybe something else. kinda lika a fan, but that’s already something. I lived in Kyoto Japan for a year while teaching there, and their word for fb friends is translated to somethign like “friendly people”, which means something good, but less than a friend.

I think this type of authoritarian behavior is going to ruin it. It is not about Facebook the site, it is about the people who use the site. They have to let the community make these decisions or they risk angering the community and at some point substitutes will be found for the site, hopefully sooner than later in my opinion. I would definitely look at investing my eggs in other baskets.

I had no idea that having too many friends could get me kicked out of facebook! How else do i advertise any new applications that i have created? Can i send mailers to all my friends? Or would that be considered to be spamming too?

my friends FB was disabled for adding to many people at once is there any possible way for her to get her account back?

Facebook seems faceless to me in relation to the robotic effects of FARCEbook trying to protect themselves from what their farcebots consider is ’spam’. One might have thought that people would use the same message on a large portion of friends saving time on re-writing BUT not FARCEbook who see it as a dangerous action. Sadly their farcebots can’t tell the difference from adverts and social connectivity of human beings – though one could think that checking up on private messages sent to friends to invite them to connect fell outside the scope of control and into the scope of privacy.
Of course don’t get me started on someone being disabled not getting the right of reply – defending themselves with being able to collect their history and not knowing what the hell they’ve been ‘disabled’ – ‘crippled’ – cut off or whatever else you’d like to call it. I don’t know if anyone’s read Franz Kafka ‘The Trial” but it certainly seemed poignant to me FARCEbook appears very Kafkaesque. Faceless farce book!

Yeah it says mine got disabled because they think I lied about my high school network but I didn’t :( and they didn’t even give me a notice

The basic reason accounts are being continuously dumped on facebook is because the system is completely overloaded now. They have expanded as much as they can, i.e. servers, etc. So those with tons of pics, videos, etc – so they dump accounts. Hence the ‘adding friends too fast’, too many messages in one day warnings. They just can’t handle the volume of activity any more, but will never admit to this.
This is the fix-all for an overloaded facebook.
Other sites do it as well. They do a mass dumping.
It sucks, but that’s the way it is.

well I have joined the group of folks who have had their fb accounts disabled. No idea why or explanation, fit in the category of “average joe” less than 100 friends post a couple of times a day, about 20 family, pets, vacation pics posted, do not flame others. For some mysterious reason fb cut me off, now just waiting for them to review my emails and hopefully reinstate my account.

    # You are under 18 years old and not part of a High School group. THIS IS SO INSANELY STUPID!!!! I DONT WANT TO HAVE PEOPLE AT MY HIGHSCHOOL KNOW I HAVE A FACE BOOK BECAUSE THEYRE ALL JERKS! NOW MY ACCOUNT IS DISABLED AND I WAS JUST TRYING TO UPLOAD A PICTURE…

  • eric c

sorry about that caps lock “rant,” I was angry at the time I posted that comment. In hind sight I should have calmed down before posting one. Apologies aside, thank you for this list. It at least gives me some closure on why my account was disabled.

I tried to use a profile stalker app and it got my account shut down. It is called “Profile Stalker – Official Application”. Be careful with that one, it will spam from your account and get your profile shut down! Just FYI…

i just got disabled this morning. i sent an email to disabled@facebook.com. i cannot see any reason as to why i have been disabled. i am extremely disappointed. i have had this account for over a year and have been using it for mostly apps. there are so many games i have been playing and now it is all gone. i have never talked bad to anyone, did anything sexual, or even spammed. i really hope they email back telling me why i got disabled. its ridiculous.

facebook disabled account for supporting arizona bill

Facebook deleted my account because I was supporting a bill in arizona that cracks down on Illegal aliens. no warning no email they deleted my account . I posted on the gov. of arizonas page please sign the bill next thing Im deleted.

  • Bill

My account was disabled too for no reason. I tried to appeal the decision and they refused to help. My plan of action is to send an email with Facebook copied on the email to their top advertisers and let them know about the unfair decisions of Facebook.
