What. The. Fuck. I'll have to come back and comment after I've had time to process this.

I remember seeing this a few years ago. It looks like it's a preview for 2007 Worlds. Supposedly, Midori Ito was never considered a "beauty" by her Japanese countrymen. Watching this video, it just sounds so damn cruel.

I don't care what anyone says, Midori was amazing!

I think they meant that her skating wasn't graceful or beautiful, which is true.

They meant her looks, not her skating.

Loves it. So great to see her actual personality rather than the "i so happy" interviews.

Midori Ito is respected all around Japan, but it is equally universally acknowledged that Mao Asada is what Midori was athletically, with a cute face, long limbs, and good artistry. Midori has said this numerous times, as has Michiko Yamada. It is not meant as an insult but rather more of a fact.

Television works quite differently in Japan than it does in the United States. Regardless of personal relationships and sentiments, most if not all variety shows operate on a dynamic that involve "insulting" or making fun of certain members. It is generally not a reflection of how the participants actually feel about each other, as it is their job to fit into certain "characters" and entertain the audience. Instead of a flat analysis of the three skaters, this show included swipes at Midori to keep things lively.
