'Speak Now,' like Taylor's previous two albums, earned her rave reviews in part for her honest lyrics that pay homage to ex-boyfriends, high school crushes and loyal, trustworthy friends. With the first two singles, 'Mine,' and 'Back to December,' both poignant referrals to past relationships (rumored to include Joe Jonas and John Mayer), Taylor keeps the mystery alive by refusing to confirm who the songs are about.
"Sometimes I would laugh because I would see it in print and it would say, 'This song, which is written about her ex, so-and-so...' Taylor states in the EW cover story. "And they would write about it as if it was fact. The fact is, I haven't ever confirmed that any song is about any particular person. There's something kind of freeing about that. As far as I'm concerned, it's all still up in the air."
Taylor also became a headline mainstay in 2009, following the now-famous interruption of her acceptance speech for Best Female Video at the MTV Video Music Awards by rapper Kanye West, Taylor waited one full year until the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards to issue a response to his inappropriate behavior, by singing a tune, 'Innocent,' which she penned in the awards show aftermath. "I had decided that I didn't want to perform on the show. Or even go," she admits. "Then I woke up in the middle of the night and I realized that I had to, and that I wanted to perform that song."
Taylor is taking some time off for the holidays before embarking on her Speak Now 2011 World Tour on February 9 in Singapore. The tour will play 87 dates in 19 countries and six stadiums, with recently-announced Christian rock group NeedtoBreathe serving as her opening act. Find tour dates here.
