Save Password Setting Not Retained In Outlook 2000 (Q290684)I run Windows 2000 Pro with Office 2000. My problem is that Outlook2000 won't remember my saved passwords for my IMAP and POP3 email accounts. I wish I could tell you which stupid software or crashed caused this problem. But I usually only use Outlook 2000 about twice per month for archiving email purposes. Normally I use AOL Communicator most of the time and occasionally Outlook Express v6. Both of them operate just fine. I'm taking a wild guess here, but if I had to pick something that may have caused it, I'd say first it was PeoplePC install software. Don't worry, I only used it for 12 days and I removed it. Below is Microsoft's Knowledge Base answer to the problem. All of my below comments are indented with a "BW:" added to avoid any confusion. Save password setting not retained in Outlook Article ID : 290684 Last Review : August 24, 2004 Revision : 1.0 This article was previously published under Q290684 Microsoft Windows 2000 Important Do not remove the main Protected Storage System Provider key. This key is not automatically regenerated. If you are not having password retention problems and you do not remember your password, deleting the user subkey may result in not being able to retrieve your mail. Note If you are a Windows 2000 user, you must have administrator permissions to edit the system registry. 1. Quit all programs. 2. Click Start, and then click Run. 3. In the Open box, type regedit32, and then click OK. BW: I can't run regedit32, as it doesn't exist. I even did a search for regedit32.* and it turns up nothing. Can run regedit.exe = though. 4. Locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider 5. On the Security menu, click Permissions. 6. Click the registry key for the user who is currently logged on and make sure that both the Read and Full Control are set to Allow. 7. Click the Advanced button, verify that the user who is currently logged on is selected, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column, and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column. 8. Click to select the Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions check box. 9. Click Apply, and then click Yes when you are prompted to continue. 10. Click OK two times. BW: I can't do 5 through 10 since I don't even get the Security menu nor click on any permissions. Yet I am the administrator on this home machine. 11. Double-click the Protected Storage System Provider key to expand the key, click the user subkey folder that is directly below the Protected Storage System Provider key, click Delete on the Edit menu, and then click Yes in the warning message dialog box. The user subkey folder looks similar to the following example: S-1-5-21-124525095-708259637-1543119021-16701 Note For every identity that you have, there will be a subkey under the Protected Storage System Provider key. To resolve this problem in all your identities, you must delete all the user subkeys folders under the Protected Storage System Provider key. BW: Tried to delete subkey and it tries to, except it reports there was an error and it cannot do so. Closed down AVG Resident Shield and Ad-watch. No help. Tried booting Windows 2000 in safe mode and still no help. 12. On the Registry menu, click Exit, and then restart your computer. Anybody have any ideas what I should do now? Thanks in advance, Bill |

Answer Number 3 >> Re: Save Password Setting Not Retained In Outlook 2003 (Q290684)Dear Vanguard and BillW50, I have had the same problem running Outlook 2003 on WinXP Pro, tried your suggestions, but still won't work. I tried a new clean install of WinXP Pro and Office 2003 and encounter the same problem without loading any other programs. As you mention here, Article ID 290684 suggests for Win XP typing in regedit32, which must be a typo. I then tried your suggestion of using regedt32.exe and was then able to delete the user subkey folder. However, that still doesn't fix the problem. When I configure my POP3 account with my username and password and proceed to access email, I still get that annoying message that I need to reenter the username and password again. Any suggestions? Thanks. "Vanguard" wrote: "BillW50" <BillW50aol.kom> wrote in message news:O08f9H2%23EHA.4092TK2MSFTNGP09.phx.gbl... 3. In the Open box, type regedit32, and then click OK. Use their webmail page and make sure the username and password you are using actually work. Try the following to see that you can actually reach their mail server and that it accepts your login credentials. To test the POP3 server: telnet <pop3servername> 110 user <username> pass <password> list quit Did the authenticate (user and pass commands) return +OK status? Did the list command do anything (even if it showed no messages but returned an +OK status)? The POP3 protocol only returns 2 statuses: +OK and -ERR (the comments after the status are optional and unpredictable). If the authentication fails then the e-mail client will assume the username or password were incorrect and presents you with the login popup. With only an -ERR status, it hasn't a clue why the login failed. Up the timeout setting in your e-mail client. Check if you are getting lots of dropped packets. Run: ping -n 100 <pop3server> If your POP3 server has been configured to ignore pings the ping against www.yahoo.com. The default of just 4 pings is not sufficient a sample to reasonably measure how many packets are getting lost on average. See how many packets are getting lost, if any. Lost packets have to be retried and this causes delay which could accumulate enough of a delay to trigger the client's timeout setting (and where some timers are internal and cannot be adjusted via the user-available setting). Make sure you are testing against the POP3 and SMTP servers on the network to which you connect. That is, first test against your ISP's mail servers. Your ISP might be blocking STMP traversing across their network to some off-domain mail server, so you have to use THIER SMTP server (but there is rarely that restriction for POP3). If that works then try connecting to the off-domain SMTP server, if that is what you use, and authenticate to it (setup your e-mail client to authenticate to the SMTP server). Disable your firewall and anti-virus e-mail scanning and then retest logging into your e-mail account. -- _________________________________________________________________ Post your replies to the newsgroup. Answer Number 5 >> Re: Save Password Setting Not Retained In Outlook 2003 (Q290684)I'm having this same frustrating problem. I just re-formatted my machine and installed XP SP2 and Office XP with SP3. I get this maddening dialog every 3 minutes -- three times no less because I'm checking two email accounts. I have tried following the steps in KB 290684. Don't work. Doesn't matter whether you try regedit.exe or regedt32.exe -- neither will let me delete the key mentioned whether I'm logged in as Administrator or not. I'm having no problem getting my mail, once I provide the password. Just tell me how to get it to recognize that I've checked the "save password" checkbox. This is driving me crazy! A side note. Outlook 2002 was installed and configured while logged in as Administrator. I tried to set up my environment so that I would work on a regular basis as a user with a "limited" account to help avoid malicious installs. This backfired when I had to keep re-logging in as administrator for the slightest of changes to my system. So, I changed my everyday user account o have Administrator privileges and that's the account I use to log into the POP3 mail server at Verizon. Don't know if this has anything to do with it. Answer Number 6 >> Re: Save Password Setting Not Retained In Outlook 2003 (Q290684)I hope you are using the security menu under regedt32 (and not in the = Windows security stuff) and then clicking on Permissions, etc. As if you = don't do this, you can have Super Administrator privileges and it still = won't let you change anything, I believe. Password Not Retained - Q290684 Tried And Doesn'T WorkI have followed several threads here and it took a while to find the current KB article 290684. I followed those steps carefully and it did not work. I am using Outlook 2003 under Win XP SP2 and it was working fine until last night. I verified with my ISP that this is not a mail server error on their side. The error message reports it as a syntax error. My ISP requires SMTP authentication and that password is not being retained, or if the email account screen shows something in the password box with the save password ticked, it still doesn't work - the network password dialog keeps popping up on every transmission - sometimes having to enter 2 or three times to get/send mail. How can I get off this merry-go-round? -- Eric Steinbock |

Save Password Setting Not Retained In Outlookhas anybody worked through article 290684 that addresses this problem? I have found difficulties and inconsistencies with it. the advice seems to be for Outlook 2002 not 2003. The resolution for windows XP seeks file 'regedit32' which can't be found One of my user sub-keys can't be deleted due to an 'error'. The problem of a password not being saved is preventing me from using Outlook and yet the advice doesn't seem to resolve the problem. Has anyone any more specific advice and solutions from their experience? |

Save Password Setting Not Retained In Outlook 2003I use Outlook 2003 on a laptop with XP Pro, both with all the latest service packs and hot fixes. My problem is the one that is supposedly addressed in KB article 290684. I have followed this "fix" explicitly several times, experiencing no problems in the process, however, I am still incessantly prompted for my password! I have searched all over for a fix, but all seem to point to this same solution, which does not rectify my problem. Interestingly, this problem only occurs on my laptop. I have a similarly configured PC which does not experience this problem. Is there a solution to this, or am I stuck until Microsoft decides to address this? Thanks! |

Password Setting Not RetainedDue to other problems, I had to reinstall Windows XP Pro. Then reinstalled Office 2003. Opened Outlook, added Norton Anti-spam and my Hotmail Account (Http), and the problems start. I know the details I entered and password are correct. Outlook continuously asks for re-entry of password and I am unable to load any of my email folders. Up until last Sunday, when I had to do the re-install I had no problems with Outlook 2003. Everything was just perfect. Have tried to resolve this issue with KB articles ID 290684 and 823578, but the problem is still happening. Is there anything else I can do to resolve this problem? |

Default Account Setting Not RetainedI have one client on my network whose Outlook 2003 REFUSES to keep their POP3 account as the default account. Each time they log off their workstation the default reverts back to Exchange, which is not currently set up to handle email beyond the intranet. Does anyone know of any reason why this one client is the only person on the network whose account settings keep reverting? And what can I do about it? A quick reply would be greatly appreciated. |

Email Password Not Retained When Closing OutlookI have usewd Outlook 2002 for years. OS is Win XP Pro. Since several weeks, Outlook will loose the passwords on all email accounts, whenever the application is being closed. I found a few similar cases, in particular the Protected Storage System Provider registry entry (259416.KB). I tried it & it did not help. It happened around the time I first used MS Office Tool 'Save My Settings Wizard.' I have used that wizard on another machine, no such mishap. I have 'repaired' MS Office, I have uninstalled & reinstalled Outlook twice, no change. I have seen one case where MS help for pay found a solution, by switcing the affected user to a new user account. That would not be practical for me. Starting from scratch would be simpler. I'd be appreciative of any suggestions. Thxs for any help, Peter K. |

Outlook 2002 With Windows Vista - Password In Email Account Is Not RetainedI have just installed Outlook 2002, as part of Office XP, into my new laptop that has Windows Vista. I was using the trial version of Office 2007, but I uninstalled it when I did not buy it. Outlook was working fine. Also, Outlook 2002 was working fine on my other computer with Windows XP. Every time I run Outlook now, and then do a Send/Receive, it asks for passwords for my two email accounts. Then when I check my email accounts under Tools, Email Accounts, then View or change existing email accounts, then change each email account, in the section for logon information, there is a box for password, with a check box for remember password. This box remains checked, and the password should remain there, but now it is being cleared, for some unknown reason. I would like to know how to fix this as it is a nuisance to have to reenter my password each time I run Outlook. Thanks |

Hotmail Account Password Not RetainedAfter months of troublefree use Outlook 2007 in WinXP is randomly deselecting the "remember my password" option in Outlook Connector. I have 5 MSN/Hotmail accounts configured for personal family use plus a seperate POP/SMPT account for work use. Firing up Outlook would result in one or more of the 5 Hotmail accounts, it's never the same account twice running, displaying a "failure to connect to server message" in the Outlook Connector interface along with a blank logon box and unchecked "remember my password" box. Manually retyping the information and ticking the box is usually accepted but is not a guarantee that it will download any email in the affected accounts. Sending email doesn't appear to be an issue however and has never been affected by any of this. The only solution I've found that works so far is to delete the affected account followed by an uninstall/reinstall of Outlook Connecter. Setting up the affected account(s) after a system restart has it working fine for a day or so if I'm lucky. Have I missed something obvious here in setting it up? LJHall |

Which Knowledge Base Article To Follow For Password Not Retained ErrorEver since I downgrade from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2002 have been having problems. First Address book was not working....fixed that somehow Now, Outlook keeps prompting for a password for a POP3 account that I created, and does not remember the password even though the checkbox asking it to do that is checked Found two articles in the knowledge base and I am not confused which one to follow. Both say it applies to Outlook 2002. I am using it on Windows 2000 Professional Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 290684 OL2002: The Save Password Setting Is Not Saved When You Connect to a POP3 Serve This is dated 6/11/2002 Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 836664 Your password is not retained in Outlook 2002 and Outlook Expres This is dated 3/3/2004 and it has a link to the other Knowledge base article How am I supposed to figure out which instructions to follow especially when it involves mucking around with the Registry which is scary |

Q290684 Did Not Resolve Issue - What Next?On a system running XP Home the user's POP3 password in Outlook 2002 is not being retained between sessions. Per Q290684 the registry was edited, the permissions verified and the user's subkey under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider was deleted. When the system and Outlook 2k2 were restarted the password is still not saved even though the 'save password' box is being checked. The user's subkey is apparently not being regenerated. Does anybody have any ideas? Thank you |

Outlook Prompts For E-Mail Account And Password Even Though "Save Password" Has Been Checked (Xp)The OS is XP Pro. One user, Adminstrator, password login. I can't recall if it's Outlook 2000 or 2003. Multiple e-mail accounts. Every time he gets his e-mail, Outlook prompts for the account logins and passwords. He checks the "save password" box and it gets the mail. But the next time he gets his e-mail, Outlook prompts for the accountnames and passwords again. Any idea why? |

Cannot Save Save Email Password Error 0X800Ccc92I am trying to set up outlook 2003 to check my companies POP3 email account. I set these accounts up all the time and they all work fine. When I put in the username and password in the setup and try to check the account when finished it pops up a window prompting for the password even though I typed it in the account and told it to save the password. When I put the password in the prompted box it will check the email properly. (This is not an incorrect password issue) the error I get when i cancel the prompted box is: reported error (0x800CCC92) : 'Your e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your account properties. Under Tools, click E-mail accounts. The server responded: -ERR Too few arguments for the pass command. I have uninstalled all virus scanners, deleted and recreated the user account, repaired Outlook installation, reinstalled outlook completely, cleaned the registry and everything under the sun to try and fix this. Anyone have any ideas beyond check my log in info? |

Outlook Remember Password SettingHi - I have a user running Outlook 2000 on Windows 2000 Professional. Outlook is configured as 'Internet Only'. Even though we select it to remember the password for the mail account, it still prompts everytime. Everything I have found in the KB or in Technet is in relation to Office 10.0 (XP) and was of no help. There is only one account configured on this machine. Can anyone give any insight? Thank you. |
