Q290684 Did Not Resolve Issue - What Next?On a system running XP Home the user's POP3 password in Outlook 2002 is notbeing retained between sessions. Per Q290684 the registry was edited, the permissions verified and the user's subkey under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider was deleted. When the system and Outlook 2k2 were restarted the password is still not saved even though the 'save password' box is being checked. The user's subkey is apparently not being regenerated. Does anybody have any ideas? Thank you |

How Do I Resolve My Email/Calander Issue?I have Office 2000 Small Business Edition, and my other 3 co-workers have Office 2003 Basic Edition. I receive calander meeting invitations in the proper format, from 2 co-workers, but my Boss' never comes to me as a calander meeting invitation. I believe I receive his as an email, in Mime format. I have to create a new calendar event entry in my calander, for his. The Icon next to the Subject, in my email, from my co-workers, is an envelope & a person's head. With my Boss', it is just a regular email envelope. I do not understand, with all three having the same Office program, I only have this problem with my Boss. If anyone can help me out here, it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks. -- cbs |

Password Not Retained - Q290684 Tried And Doesn'T WorkI have followed several threads here and it took a while to find the current KB article 290684. I followed those steps carefully and it did not work. I am using Outlook 2003 under Win XP SP2 and it was working fine until last night. I verified with my ISP that this is not a mail server error on their side. The error message reports it as a syntax error. My ISP requires SMTP authentication and that password is not being retained, or if the email account screen shows something in the password box with the save password ticked, it still doesn't work - the network password dialog keeps popping up on every transmission - sometimes having to enter 2 or three times to get/send mail. How can I get off this merry-go-round? -- Eric Steinbock |

Save Password Setting Not Retained In Outlook 2000 (Q290684)I run Windows 2000 Pro with Office 2000. My problem is that Outlook 2000 won't remember my saved passwords for my IMAP and POP3 email accounts. I wish I could tell you which stupid software or crashed caused this problem. But I usually only use Outlook 2000 about twice per month for archiving email purposes. Normally I use AOL Communicator most of the time and occasionally Outlook Express v6. Both of them operate just fine. I'm taking a wild guess here, but if I had to pick something that may have caused it, I'd say first it was PeoplePC install software. Don't worry, I only used it for 12 days and I removed it. Below is Microsoft's Knowledge Base answer to the problem. All of my below comments are indented with a "BW:" added to avoid any confusion. Save password setting not retained in Outlook Article ID : 290684 Last Review : August 24, 2004 Revision : 1.0 This article was previously published under Q290684 Microsoft Windows 2000 Important Do not remove the main Protected Storage System Provider key. This key is not automatically regenerated. If you are not having password retention problems and you do not remember your password, deleting the user subkey may result in not being able to retrieve your mail. Note If you are a Windows 2000 user, you must have administrator permissions to edit the system registry. 1. Quit all programs. 2. Click Start, and then click Run. 3. In the Open box, type regedit32, and then click OK. BW: I can't run regedit32, as it doesn't exist. I even did a search for regedit32.* and it turns up nothing. Can run regedit.exe = though. 4. Locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider 5. On the Security menu, click Permissions. 6. Click the registry key for the user who is currently logged on and make sure that both the Read and Full Control are set to Allow. 7. Click the Advanced button, verify that the user who is currently logged on is selected, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column, and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column. 8. Click to select the Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions check box. 9. Click Apply, and then click Yes when you are prompted to continue. 10. Click OK two times. BW: I can't do 5 through 10 since I don't even get the Security menu nor click on any permissions. Yet I am the administrator on this home machine. 11. Double-click the Protected Storage System Provider key to expand the key, click the user subkey folder that is directly below the Protected Storage System Provider key, click Delete on the Edit menu, and then click Yes in the warning message dialog box. The user subkey folder looks similar to the following example: S-1-5-21-124525095-708259637-1543119021-16701 Note For every identity that you have, there will be a subkey under the Protected Storage System Provider key. To resolve this problem in all your identities, you must delete all the user subkeys folders under the Protected Storage System Provider key. BW: Tried to delete subkey and it tries to, except it reports there was an error and it cannot do so. Closed down AVG Resident Shield and Ad-watch. No help. Tried booting Windows 2000 in safe mode and still no help. 12. On the Registry menu, click Exit, and then restart your computer. Anybody have any ideas what I should do now? Thanks in advance, Bill |

Cannot Resolve NameHello, I have been using OUtlook 2007 copnnecting to an EXchange 2003 server for a couple of momths without problem. Since Saturday, I cannot connect to my exchange server anymore. I get a 0x8004011d error: "Server is not available" . It is just me - other users have no problem. OWA access is working fine. I can ping the exchange server and telnet on the smtp port. I have tried to set the IP address rather than the exchange server name in my outlook profile but I still get the same error... I have also tried to reset my TCP/IP stack and re-installed my VPN application. Still no luck. I have finally re-installed Outlook and recreated a new profile and it is still not working. Any idea whayt could be wrong ort should I re-install Windows? Thanks. |

Can'T Resolve NamesHow's come Outlook can't resolve the name I type. In other words, I should be able to put my sister's full name or first name in the "To...". Outlook should be able to find the email automatically. This is not working. It will remember names that I use but won't search my contacts to give me options (if multiple names exits). Thanks |

Outlook Will Not Resolve NameHi, A bit of background first. I have created a new domain and migrated all users and mailboxes from the old domain using ADMT and Exchange migration wizard. All the accounts seem to be ok, users have access to files and outlook generally works. On each machine i logged on as the user in the new domain, then copied their old profile across (SID's were copied during the migration) If it makes any difference we have a child domain. 2 problems i have found since then, 1 is intermittent but they might be related. 1. if i open mail from control panel and edit the current mail profile, it will tell me the "Microsoft exchange server is unavailable". I can click cancel and edit this account always clicking cancel when it prompts me with this box. If i open outlook at the end it will open outlook without any problems. I need to correct this as we have to change accounts very frequently and i need this working. 2. At random times outlook will hang, if you close outlook and try to connect to the exchange server it will not find it. You can ping it, there are no errors on either the server or workstation, but it will not connect. I have tried creating a new mail profile and that hasn't worked. I have created a new mailbox incase some setting from the old server is still on there, i still get the same problem. Some articles suggested a possible RDP problem, and checking the registry for some dll references, these are all there. How does outlook resolve the server/ user in this instance? Any help would be appreciated as this has me stumped. |

Help To Resolve 80070057Several similar questions but I can understand solution... As background I am using MS Office Outlook 2003 - I have been using Outlook for several years, however when sending an email to a display name (e-mail address hidden unless look under property right click on display name). I received the following error message from the progress window - ! Task 'mail. (pop3 server) .net - Sending' reported error (0x80070057) : 'Could not complete the operation. One or more parameter values are not valid.' If I just type the email address it works ... so what is wrong with using the display name ... the product doesn't seem to cope. Your assistance in plain instructions would be appreciated... Manx Thanx Moonjer |

Stop Resolve From GalIs there anyway that I cannot stop Outlook from resloving an email from the GAL? Here is the situation: Our office sends email to people worldwide through a single email provider, however Outlook resolves most of the address and sends it to a different email address. The problem is that a lot of the resolved addresses are no longer valid or not monitored frequently. I use to use "smtpout:" in front of all the email address to prevent to the resolve but that is not working anymore. Please help! Dwight |

Dns Tries To Resolve Ip NumbersHi all, I have a client who's running XP pro and IE 6.0 sp1 on a laptop that is signed on locally, although at the office it can sign onto an office domain. She has a problem reaching several sites (just two, in fact) which return a cannot find error message. When I try to enter the IP # of those sites. IE treats them like URL's and tries to resolve them. Hence, the error message. I've tried resetting security settings in Internet Options, but no go. I've scanned for viruses and spyware, and cleaned that up. Still no go. Any other suggestions. Thanks in advance to all. |

How Do I Resolve 503 ErrorI just set up two email addresses to work with outlook. Everything completed successfully. I was even able to read emails in both accounts. However, when I tried to send an email, I get the following error: The following recipient(s) could not be reached: 'cliffchrisadelphia.net' on 10/10/2005 9:04 PM 503 This mail server requires authentication when attempting to send to a non-local e-mail address. Please check your mail client settings or contact your administrator to verify that the domain or address is defined for this server. How can I resolve this. Thanks for your help. |

Outlook Failing- Can Anyone Help Me Resolve This?I have Outlook 2003 installed on two computers-one works seamlessly (my wife's) while mine (same software source) is a lemon. I have tried to repair the multiple problems using this help group over the past 6-9 months and have, as of yet, not been able to fix even one problem. The program takes a very long time to send/receive any mail from the internet, and, despite my fixing the settings, will not update the mailboxes without manual input. Any e-mail attachment creates an error message saying it couldn't be scanned because I'm offline (when I am constantly online). I've never had this option work. I am unable to use reminders and get an error message saying that they could not be opened. I have tried multiple switches to fix this and even erased every reminder in my calendar but get the same error each time I enter a new appt. I have downloaded every update/fix known to man without help. As I said before, my wife's computer has no such problems with the same program. Is there any way to reinstall only the Outlook portion of Office? I am tired of not being able to use the program as I'd like to. Can anyone point me to another site or location for help? I've posted this before and several other requests and get either more questions or minimal input that hasn't helped. When I try to get further input, I'm now on the 3rd or 4th page of the forum and get no more input. Do I have to fully reinstall Office? Can I just reinstall Outlook? What's the next best step towards getting a functioning application? Aj Addendum I have a MSN account I access via broadband cable via Cox cable. I've never had any trouble logging on with both computers. There is no difference in the problems when I have either one or both computers logged on. The Outlook having issues will download mail but is extremely slow and won't download them automatically at preset time intervals. I had the same issues before I was using two computers on the current internet account. |

Unable To Resolve A Gal EntryHave had VB code written for a while that updates a common calendar from the calendar's of the members of a particular Distribution List ("CorpCal"). This has been working across changes from NT to 2000 server & Exchange 5.5 to 2000, with various versions of outlook. I have now encountered a problem with name resolution from the GAL. As a starting point I have 2 User entries in AD called "Fred Bloggs" and "Joe Smith", all set up with valid Exchange mailboxes & accounts. These 2 are members of CorpCal & the calendar update worked fine. I then added a Contact called "Fred (Home)" [First name "Fred", Last name "(Home)"] with a SMTP address. Still no problem. I then added a Contact called "Joe (Home)" [First name "Joe", Last name "(Home)"], also with a SMTP address. Now when the calendar update runs I get "Unable to resolve Joe Smith". In Outlook (2002 & 2003) I enter "Joe (Home)" & click Check Names & I get the box that asks me to resolve the name manually. Any suggestions would be welcome. |

Finally Resolve Pst Corruption ..Here HowHi, I finally resolve my outlook.pst corruption. I tried to recover the corrupted file using different software like EasyRecoveryand scanpst.exe . But they failed to do it and freeze nearly at end of file. So the corruption occurs at the end of the file. The coruption really occurs at the very low level. That's why those tools cannot do the job. What I;ve done, it editing my (400 meg !) pst file in a hex editor et cut the last 10 megs to remove he corruption. . Then I used the scanpst.exe tools that come with windows to recover my pst file. Finally got outlook working ! |

Outlook 2003 Not Able To Resolve Names "First Last"?My company just implemented Windows XP/Outlook 2003, and when I type the first and last name in the "To" field, example: "John Smith", the name does not resolve, and will give me a "does not recognize" message when I try to send. However, if I type it in as "Smith,John" it will resolve just fine and also be remembered when I type it again. I contacted one of our technical support people and they said that this is just new functionality with 2003. (So pretty much I should learn to live with it.) Since I'm part of a pilot group for this new application I just wanted to know if this is really the case. Is it? Thanks! Adam |

Cannot Resolve Address With Contacts FoldersI installed Outlook 2002(XP) over an existing Outlook version that was a part of my Office2000 program when I acquired an HP IPAG pocket PC. Since then I have never been able to properly sync the Contacts portion of Outlook2002 with the IPAQ. I believe that this is due to the configuration of Outlook contacts. When I open the Address Book from the Outlook, tools, options menu and click on the Address Book – tools, options, keep personal addresses in: there is no option for “Outlook Address Bookâ€, just contacts, business, local, etc. - which includes some of my custom folders that show as sub-folders under “Contacts†in Outlook Personal Folders. The “address book†still seems to be my email address source, but it is not necessarily linked to the Contacts folders in Outlook. How can I resolve this? |

Error 404 - Cannot Resolve Host Name To Ip AddressMy elderly neighbor can no longer use Outlook Express. When she connects to the server, she gets the message "Error 404, cannot resolve host name to IP address." This happens whether OE is open or not. If she clicks on send & receive in OE, she immediately I gets the square box that says your server has terminated the connection.... reasons might be long period of inactivity [blah blah blah.] She can use IE without any problems, and checks her email via webmail. At some point, she added another identity in OE for her roommate, but then removed it. Could that have screwed up something in the registry? She temporarily disabled Norton and that didn't help either. Any ideas appreciated! |

Outlook Wont Resolve Addresses - Help!I have recently migrated from Outlook Express on a W2K (with a shared address book to Outlook) to Outlook 2007 on a Windows Vista machine then to Outlook 2003 on a WinXP professional PC. The process of transferring the contacts folder was so convoluted that I cannot remember exactly what I did. The problem is that when composing an email, the only addresses that resolve are those from people I have received emails from since migrating. If I click on the 'contacts' tab I can see all my contacts and the email addresses are all underlined. If I click on tools/address book/outlook address book' no entries are listed. If I select 'contacts' as the address book then all email addresses are there. My contact details appeared to be in a .pab file so I imported that into the Outlook file (sorry cannot remember if address or contact) but made no difference. But if I add a new contact then only the .pst folder is updated - no longer the pab folder. If I click file/folders/properties for contacts' then 'show this folder as an e-mail address book' is checked. The address book is 'contacts'. You can probably tell that I have googled this fairly thoroughly. Anyone any further ideas? Davy |
