マサチューセッツ大学ボストン校のオフィシャルサイトに学長専用コラムページがあり、そこに池田氏への名誉博士号授与に言及したコラムがあった。日本滞在中に投稿したもののようだ。一部抜粋引用する。

なお、引用原文中の「・・・」は創価学会や池田氏について説明的に長々と修飾した部分だ。特に重要でないし、訳すと冗漫になるので省略した。

（取意）私たちは、6月の本学の学位授与式（卒業式）に出席できなかった池田氏に名誉人文学博士号を直接お渡しするため、創価学会のお招きを受けて訪日している。
創価学会は快く我々一行の旅費を負担してくださった。彼らが我々をかくも手厚く歓待してくださるのは、一つには、本学が授与する名誉博士号が、池田氏にとって300個目の名誉学位であり、偉業達成の記念碑ともいうべき栄誉だったからだ。

We were invited by ・・・Soka Gakkai, to present an honorary doctor of humane letters degree, honoris causa, to ・・・Daisaku Ikeda in person, after Mr. Ikeda was not able to attend our commencement ceremony in June. つまり、6/4の授与式に来れなかった池田氏に学位を直接手渡してもらうために、学会が、費用学会もちで学長らを呼んだということだ。

費用を誰が出したかなど、大学オフィシャルサイトで敢えて言及する必要はないと思うのだが、大学の公金で物見遊山に行ったわけではない、ということを表明しておく必要があったのかも知れない。というのは、

以前、イギリスのクイーンズ大学が池田氏に名誉博士号を授与するために訪日した後、地元紙から「名誉学位授与ごときで43000ポンドも無駄遣いしたのか」と突き上げられたことがあったからだ（*2）。大学側は結局訪日コストも旅費の出所も明かさなかったそうだが、そういう前例もあるし、財政難の昨今、要らぬ物議をかもさぬためにも、上記学長コラムで「費用は学会もち」と敢えて書いたのではないか。

それにしても、学会が喧伝するように「池田センセイが素晴らしいので、どうしても名誉学位を出したい」と、大学が自発的に授与するものであるのなら、もらう側が授与側の訪日出費をまかなう、というのはおかしな話だが、大学への寄付プラス関係者の日本招待という詰め合わせセットの対価として名誉学位がある、と考えれば、ありうる話だ。

思うに、中国の大学からの名誉称号も、訪日して授与という例がこれまで多数あったが、財政難に喘ぐ中国の大学が、何の実質的見返りもなく、抽象的名目の名誉称号を池田氏に出すために、わざわざ身銭を切って要員を派遣するとは考えにくい。これらも学会丸抱えで訪日したと考える方が自然だ。

アカデミックな世界でそのような銅臭（カネの匂い）紛々たる話などあるわけない、と反発を覚える学会員がいるかも知れないが、その認識は天真爛漫すぎる、と知るべきだ。（弊ブログの「中国からの名誉学術称号のカラクリ」を参照のこと）

さて、マ大学からの名誉学位の正式授賞が6/4であったことを裏付けるもう一つの資料があったので、紹介しておく。
同大学オフィシャルサイトのデイリーニュースページの6/4の記事だ。
ジョージ・ラッセルJr.（ステートストリート社副社長）の名誉法学博士号受賞について書いたものだが、その末尾に以下のようにあった。

マサチューセッツ大学ボストン校の第42回卒業式（学位授与式）で栄誉を受けたのは、他に、代表スピーチを行ったビクトリア・レジー・ケネディ（エドワード・M・ケネディ前上院議員の妻）、名誉学位を受けた池田大作（仏教指導者であり、池田国際対話センターの創立者）、学長賞を受けたエドワード・J・マーキーの各氏である。
Others honored at UMass Boston’s 42nd Commencement include main speaker Victoria Reggie Kennedy, wife of the late U. S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy, honorary degree recipient Daisaku Ikeda, a Buddhist leader and founder of the Ikeda Center for Peace, Learning, and Dialogue, and Chancellor’s Medal recipient Congressman Edward J. Markey.

池田氏もちゃんと当日の受賞者として列記されている。
池田氏が行けなくとも、名代が代理受賞するのが通例であり、礼儀である。授与事実はあったのは間違いあるまい。11/21は直接本人に渡し直したというだけのことだ。

先日のコメント欄にも書いたが、不思議なのは、名誉称号授与が決定すると聖教は真っ先に「決定」を報じるのが常（決定と受領で2度美味しい記事が書ける）なのだが、マ大学については、それが全くなかった。これはなぜか。仮に（ありえないことだが）6/4の卒業式典が「発表だけ」だったとしても、それを報じてもいいはずだ。

超名門大学に似た名だから、300個目に当てようと考えた、というのは当方の邪推に過ぎないが、それくらいしか理由が見つからないし、池田宣揚ネタに飢えている創価学会の考えそうな手法ではある。

Call for nominations for 2011 honorary degrees

In the coming weeks we will formally announce the 2010 honorary degree recipients, but I want to encourage you to help us plan ahead for next year.

To allow those involved in nominating and recommending candidates for honorary degrees in 2011 appropriate time for deliberation, as well as to ensure the widest possible campus participation in that process, I am now asking the campus community to submit the names of persons who merit the recognition symbolized by our honorary degrees. Candidates for these degrees should be persons of distinguished accomplishment and high ethical standards. They should also be people whom our students would want to emulate and who exemplify the values of the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Explicit factors the university considers in awarding honorary degrees include:

National or international intellectual, artistic, cultural, or public service distinction in a particular field,

Outstanding achievements the University of Massachusetts Boston wishes to acknowledge, and

Outstanding contributions to the university and/or the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Consistent with university policy, the provost will set up a special committee on honorary degrees, which will receive nominations from the faculty, staff, students, the Student Government Association, and the UMass Boston Alumni Association. The committee will submit its recommendations to the provost, who will, after receiving advice from the Faculty Council, make recommendations to the chancellor. The chancellor, after discussions with the Executive Leadership Team, will make recommendations to the president and the Board of Trustees in time for action by the board.

Nominations should be accompanied by biographical information and a statement giving reasons for bestowing the honor. Please provide this in a narrative format (do not send Web-site links to explain your choice). The deadline for nominations for 2011 honorary degrees is May 7, 2010.
