Check out this great story from our friends at CasaSugar!
Sometimes, great design comes from the humblest of origins. Such is the case with wine and apple crates, which can be repurposed to serve a pretty purpose in every room in your house. Check out some of my favorite examples!

The Wood-Be Side Tables by Rabih Hage were created for his 2009 "Roughed Up" collection. The wonky positioning of the three crates gives it a cartoonish feel. Or, stack crates inside of each other for a table display. I like the idea of using cup hooks, as shown here, but hanging necklaces from the hooks instead. Stack chunky bracelets along the top of the interior crate.

Use wine crates to create an easy and inexpensive bookshelf, like design consultant Frances Weiss did in her apartment.

Take the bottoms out of crates and mount them as open shelving in a kitchen. An eclectic selection of tableware will help to add life to the look.

In reality ... if I order wine, does it REALLY come in a wooden crate or a cardboard one. ??? Hmmm .... I wonder.
ReplyWelcome back to 1971! There used to be a store that sold furniture that at least appeared to be made out of crates called This End Up. Also around 1978 or so, fledgling guitar amp company Crate Amps started manufacturing a guitar amplifier that looked like a wooden crate with a speaker in it. This may be a novel concept to people born after 1980, but then again most people born after 1980 have probably never seen a wooden crate.
ReplyI love shabby chic! : )
ReplyMy brother-in-law deals in antiques and collectibles. Crates are nothing new as far as decorating goes. The ones in the photos are just too new. The real decorator crates are the ones that look like they've shipped around the world more than once.
ReplyWOW!! Maybe they'll find a way to use old spools,,,,,,Oh yea I did that in high school. Crates too.
ReplyMy what a unique idea. NOT
I have 3 old wooden fruit crates that I've hung on the wall in my kitchen and filled with old bottles. Looks really nice. And you're right, the older the crates, the better they look.
ReplyOh my.
ReplyWe did this in the 60's and 70's.

Yeah, we did this in the 60's, they called us hippies, and our furniture Trash,,go figure
ReplyI'm surprised someone hasn't suggested making a bookshelf from bricks or concrete blocks and 3 wooden boards and called it a new idea? Who out there has made a bookshelf like that?
