WHY DO WE NEED THIS!! Just look at the list of serial killers and where there have been maximum throughout history, the answer is the US... (wiki serial killers by country) they always like to hide their faults to the world... They dont need anyone to bomb their country, their own psychos are killing their people! |

I couldn't believe that Houston, TX which has about the same amount of people as Jamaica has 287 murders and Jamaica has 887. I can't understand that. |

They say that Brazil has about 55,000 murders per year. They also don't have the death penalty here, so prisons hold way more inmates than they should. |
Zaraza 24th August 2010 |
I could not find BRAZIL in this list. Is this data correct? |
Roger Voelker MD 28th July 2010 |
Where can I find a reliable murder rate score? The various sites I have check do not agree with each other. I feel like I am wasting my time. Any suggestions. |
John 25th July 2010 |
These statistics are mostly false and many of the statistics are outdated. |
Patrick 1st July 2010 |
They also fergot Brazil. We are on almost 50.000.
PS: Our government does release information. But it is usually too late to influence elections. |

When they going to update nationmaster ? For example they claim South Africa has 71 per 100 000 murder a year when it's in fact ha;f that much these days and decreasing. Racist ex South Africans use these inflated figures all the time to justify their views. |
Tumi 6th June 2010 |
It appears to me that people who compiled the above statistics - were very biased to other countries. Was this done to discredit other countries - PLEASE UPDATE!!! |

The mexican firearm murder rate is TWICE that of the untied stated according to wikipedia...the above figures are ancient! |

It would be nice to see who is doing the murdering and who they are murdering. It is my understanding that 90% of the offenders are male but at least most of those they murder are male also. If males want to kill other males that is fine with me but they need to leave women and children alone. |

Brazil and China never seem to release their information. Are their crime rates that high? Probably. Rogue politicians hording and abusing good land and people. Who does letting crime continue benefit the most? Politicians. It creates a smoke screen over the people who rush to safeguard and comfort themselves sacrificing their rights in the process, leaving politicians (who are surrounded by bodyguards) to hoard and steal everyone else's share of the country's bounty. |

To Bonnie. the hawaiian kingdom will not be reinstated. Hawaii wouldnt rebel against the U.S, or even ask to cecede. Hawaii is the most free and happiest state there is... and they are living alot better than they did when they were not under our control. |
Bonnie 13th March 2010 |
To Mr. Anonymous- Hawaii is a state according to the US but it is actually an illegally occupied sovereign nation. The Hawaiian Kingdom will be reinstated one day, you'll see. There is MUCH misunderstanding....see for yourself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nqDkCzwXeY

Nice for this to be updated think it is from 2002. How about something more recent? |

China isn't listed? That's pretty crazy. Their yearly murder count is in the tens of thousands, as would be expected for such a large country.

This website has only published incorrect or incomplete data.i have cross referenced all the data for data verification purposes and it has rendered all the information useless. Countless countries are not listed, numbers are off/outdated/simply wrong, the data is skewed or listed in a biased manner. Please make appropriate changes! |
Sam 24th February 2010 |
What are the most recent stats for Guatemala? I was told the murder rate is high. |
Philip 21st February 2010 |
I think you misinterpreted the BKA statistics for Germany. As far as I understand the document the BKA includes "completed" and "attempted" murder. If that is correct then the number of murders is around 50% of what you listed.

Lest we forget Trinidad and Tobago, they have one of the highest per capita murder rates in the world - begs the question where are they (or was the data compiled by a national in an attempt to keep the business and tourist interests alive...)? |
Suid 29th January 2010 |
Interesting enough...South Africa does not have the death penalty any longer BUT still maintains a top spot?I am glad I left!!! living in New Zealand and have a 51 as per above. Can atleast sleep better! |

There are 195 countries in the world, of which 192 are members of the UN (source: http://geography.about.com/cs/countries/a/numbercountries.htm). This list should simply be in alphabetical order; ranking such an incomplete set of data in this way is meaningless and misleading. |
Richard 25th December 2009 |
John, yeah, lets all move to Qatar cause it's so safe? Yeah, perfectly safe, until you are sentenced to be stoned to death for taking an asprin :) |
Boerseun 19th December 2009 |
South Africa, where I live is #4, but still the soccer 2010 worldcup will be staged there? What was FIFA thinking when the decided on this? |

What a waste of time. Statistics gathered by the U.N.? "Lies, damned lies, statistics." |
Reader 20th November 2009 |
I notice that people keep asking why China isn't on the list. China actual has a very low murder rate. Gun ownership is very low. civilian handgun ownership is 100% illegal, and since there is almost no hunting for sport rifle and shotgun ownership is very low, too. Knife carrying is also very low.
This means that if a Chinese person gets into a fight or robs somebody, there is little chance of somebody actually being killed.
This is why China is so low down the list. Victims of crime and violence usually survive with just a few cuts and bruises. |
Chandra 18th November 2009 |
Yes Philippines ranks among the top ten nations, and this is only for "reported" and "documented" homicides. What more the unreported cases? |
hungryhippo247 18th November 2009 |
I can't believe Philippines is No. 8!
My own country. It hurts me to see this. |

Did we just decide to ignore the fact that the land mass of Greenland even exists? Is there any data on Greenland, also, why have you completely excluded the land mass from the map? |

I was expecting to see guatemala there and el salvador. |
Moonalotta 28th August 2009 |
Wheres Hawaii on this list ? |
Yeah, this list is crap 5th August 2009 |
I was looking at the murders with firearms numbers and El Salvador is listed in the total numbers but not in the per capita. El Salvador is one of the most dangerous countries in the world. It can't be left out of the list. What about Brazil, China, North Korea, Iran, etc? |
Michael 24th July 2009 |
There seems to be a serious error in the German figure: German crime statistics counts Attempted Murder as Murder. Die actual number of people murdered in Germany last year was 370. |
Vitaly (Russia) 24th July 2009 |
Wow! What a dangerous country I live not realizing it. Russia is going mad. |
Burningiceburg INDIAN 12th June 2009 |
India is having second largest population in the world is ranked top in the murders list cos, this country, where a intentional homicide is committed the accussed is fined with death penality, that is why it is ranking so high, in addition to this, China is Country which is having largest population in the world, is not at all mentioned here, if it is given it will be very beneficial to all. Russia is second in the list cos, in this country military offences are dealt very severly and even result with death penality. And one more country is missing that is BRAZIL, where the rate of offence is pity high compared to the top two countries. |
Bill 8th May 2009 |
Several countries are missing.. what about Brazil? It has the reputation of a very dangerous country.. having it ranked would be very useful... or maybe it's me who couldnt find it going to check again. |
john brown 4th May 2009 |

venezuela has the highest crime rate in south america.....

obviously this list needs some serious updating. |

Six of the top ten countries for recorded intentional homicides have the death penalty. They are India, Indonesia, the United States, Thailand, Mexico and Russia. Mexico retains the death penalty only for exceptional crimes such as military crimes. Russia is considered abolitionist in practice. (http://web.amnesty.org/pages/deathpenalty-countries-eng) Ukraine and South Africa are the most recent countries in the top ten to abolish the death penalty. South Africa abolished the death penalty for all crimes in 1997, and Ukraine in 1999. Only two of the bottom 10 countries on this list – Dominica and Qatar – have the death penalty. In the year 2000, Dominica had two murders and Qatar had one. In the world, there are 78 countries that practice the death penalty, 83 that do not have the death penalty for any crime, 13 that have abolished the death penalty for ordinary crimes, and 22 that have the death penalty but have not executed anybody for at least 10 years. |
