Recent TV cancellations have left some actors -- up-and-comers and established stars -- stranded. But there's no reason why these actors should be out of work.
Primetime shows just need to follow the lead of the still-breathing soap operas, whose casting directors are picking up actors from canceled shows (Maura West moved from 'As the World Turns' to 'The Young and the Restless'; Kim Zimmer jumped on 'One Life to Live' from 'Guiding Light,' etc.)
So let's take our favorite actors from primetime shows we've lost and plug them into current hits.
Maura Tierney. Despite TV Squad's best efforts, 'The Whole Truth', starring Tierney, was canceled last month. Let's get Tierney back on the air and pronto! For the 'Charlie's Angels' 2011 reboot, who says Charlie has to be a guy? The smoky-voiced Tierney would be perfect sending the Angels out on their adventures.
Eric Stoltz. Pale and soft-spoken, fate has not been kind to Stoltz recently. First, the premiere of the 'Back to the Future' 25th anniversary DVD revealed long-lost footage of Stoltz as Marty McFly (he was dismissed in favor of Michael J. Fox weeks into the shoot). That was followed by the sudden termination of his 'Battlestar Galactica' prequel 'Caprica.' Well, we have just the place for an actor in shock – the post-apocalypse Bible Belt. A dazed Stoltz would work wonderfully on AMC's 'The Walking Dead.' Watch 'False Labor,' the last-aired episode of 'Caprica', below.
Jimmy Smits. The enduring TV star was cast out by NBC when 'Outlaw' was canceled last month. We suggest he team with Elizabeth Mitchell's Erica in containing the intergalactic reptiles on 'V.' The Resistance could use Bail Organa's experience in space diplomacy. A bit of trivia -- a co-executive producer of 'Outlaw' was another ex-NBC employee, Conan O'Brien.
Rhona Mitra. A co-star of 'The Gates', ABC's brief attempt at the supernatural, Mitra has consistently been cast as mysterious and sultry. But her resume includes Sacha Baron Cohen's outrageous Ali G movie. Over the top might finally put Mitra over: how about a quintessential 'She's Out of My League' girlfriend for Zach Galifianakis on 'Bored to Death'?
Hayley Hasselhoff. OK 'Huge' being canceled makes us hopping mad. Moving on, the talented Haselhoff's curvy beauty and silent movie star face would fit right in on 'Boardwalk Empire'.
Jamie King: The 'My Generation' star and former runway model is looking for the same small-screen luck that has graced Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks. But King doesn't have to go reality. Wouldn't Serena's storyline on 'Gossip Girl' benefit from a long-lost older sister?
Linus Roache. Not known for comedy (films like 'Priest' and 'Wings of the Dove' were NOT laugh riots), we'd still like to see the 'Law & Order' star bouncing back as another "How Can This Go Wrong?" boyfriend for Liz Lemon on '30 Rock'
Jon Voight. Not that anyone has to worry if the Oscar-winning patriarch of the hyped-but ratings -hampered 'Lone Star' will work again, but we'd love to see his scary glower somewhere on 'Raising Hope' (as if that family doesn't have enough problems). Here's a glimpse of Voight's work on 'Lone Star'.
Any more suggestions for your favorite actors from cancelled shows? We're all ears! Leave your comments below.
I love that you want Maura back on television ASAP - believe me, her fans want that too. :-) But it needs to be a lead role where her brilliance can shine. She's the best actress working today, hands down, and she deserves a role that honors that, like a great new HBO or AMC show that centers around her.
I couldn't agree more. Maura's the best, and I can't help thinking The Whole Truth might have been more successful with a more appealing character created for her defense counsel co-star; the writers made him such a jerk most of the time that it was difficult to like him.
I love the Eric Stoltz idea, who says there can only be one leading man? Jimmy Smits is an actor I love or can't stand depending on the show (I guess that means he's doing a good job as an actor), and again I like the idea of him in a bit of an action show fighting the good fight. I think Linus Roache will be a very big star if he ever finds the right vehicle for him.
I HATE when good shows are just not watched and get cut. The Whole Truth was GOOD, and I'll miss it! I felt the same about Women's Murder Club with Angie Harmon (please, PLEASE tell me Rizzoli and Isles didn't get cut, too?!?!)....
i agree that maura tierney is a wonderful and compelling actress. i don't think she would do charlies voice unless she were very well compensated for it. i want her to try the big screen again. i have seen her in several movies and she is always wonderful and luminous. for her i keep my fingers crossed that she stays well and works alot so i have the pleasure of enjoying her performances
Has the world gone mad? Three Rivers, Trauma, and now The Whole Truth? Three FANTASTIC shows canned by idiots, I'm sure. And yet the reality shows are reproducing by the dozens! I don't understand.
I couldn't agree with you more! You get hooked good shows as they put them out there just enough to make you want to see more then pull them. Get rid of some of the game shows that swamp the tv at night, there are enough on during the day, get rid of some of stupid reality shows and bring back Trama, Three Rivers, The whole truth and outlaws. I admit I did not like the first week of outlaws but after that it was much better. What ever happened to having good shows on Saturday night? Not everyone goes out to party on the weekend!
I loved the whole truth...I don't believe it was given enough time...I really enjoyed ..maybe TNT or Fox will pick it up...all my favorite shows are there anyway..
I'd love to see Maura Tierney interacting w/ Mark Harmon's character on "NCIS." Love her, but did not watch her latest show 'cause I just can't stand ONE MORE SHOW about lawyers, doctors or cops!
I cannot believe a quality show like " The Whole Truth " would get cancelled in favor of crap like Better With You, Mike and Molly, School Pride, and the like. I understand they are on different networks but doesn't ABC care about quality anymore? TV by Disney is getting like news by Disney, more unbelieveable by the day!

Maura Tierney for Charley? Why would you want to hide such a talented actress behind a phone?

I HOPE and PRAY that Rizzoli and Isles gets canceled. OR it needs to be fixed. It's tone is all off.

So sad that THE WHOLE TRUTH is being cancelled. Seems like all the shows I've enjoyed in the past year have been taken off the air.
