Video: Why the Bugatti Veyron needs a bigger backup camera
Since the Bugatti Veyron costs a shiek's ransom, you'd think it's loaded with all of the latest technology. For the most part, it is. One area in which it falls short, however, is visibility.
You see, there is no big honkin' screen in the Veyron's dash to display what its backup camera sees. Instead, Bugatti went slummin' for its camera system and uses one of those tiny screens embedded in the rear view mirror, the same kind of tech more plebian automakers offer when you order a backup camera without checking the box for a navigation system.
Though incorporating a big screen would surely have hurt the Veyron's interior aesthetics, it might've prevented this absolutely idiotic move that resulted in a million-dollar auto backing into a Toyota Corolla on its way out for a test drive on the streets of Chicago. The driver, further demonstrating he has no business behind the wheel, then proceeds to pull forward and scrape the bumper on the sidewalk. The world's shortest test drive in the world's fastest car reportedly cost the man some $30,000, which is nothing compared to the size of the bruise on his ego. If you want to prove that your skills can take you farther than eight feet in a Veyron, the car is still for sale by Chicago's Bentley Gold Coast dealer. Watch the shaky bystander handy cam video after the jump.

*a thousand newborn kittens being slaughtered, one at a time, with a rusty phillips screwdriver
nah, he hit the thing going only 1/253, or .4% of the veyrons top speed. they can get some turtle wax and that'll buff right out, right?
PlatinumSkeet 11:24AM (11/08/2010)
I wonder how much that love tap dropped the value of the car... Probably not much
v6sonoma 11:41AM (11/08/2010)
Eh it wasn't BAD, but I'm sure the toyota drivers glad they got hit and not the other way around. Talk about a tough phone call. "So what did you hit?" "A WHAT!"
2buck 11:50AM (11/08/2010)
Did you notice there was a cop right there? If the lady that got hit was smart she would have gotten out of her car screaming "my neck, my neck... I think it's broke" doing a little Rodney Dangerfield act from Caddyshack. (yes this is my second classic film reference in as many days- I worked in a video store during the late 80's)

Well, for the Corolla, that was probably repairable with $500. Unfortunately, the Bugatti costs a lot more for the same kind of damage.

well... the camera man is awful because he misses the collision about 1mm off the side of his viewfinder LOL

I think this is the last car any human soul would want to hit by accident...

@PlatinumSkeet:
True, but it's also the first car that any human soul would want to get hit by on accident.

And one that could have been prevented had the woman in the Corolla driven forward with traffic...instead of sitting in the middle of the road.
A good driver in the Veyron would have helped too!
Kevin6432 12:11PM (11/08/2010)
Or maybe a smidgen of visibility out the back. One of the many compromises of 1000 HP mid-engine car.

IMHO, I'm thinking that the car should have been turned around... What were they thinking? Backing out onto a NY Street. Is the dealership that small? And if the salesman was out in the street anyway why didn't he direct traffic for the guy or let him know it was all clear since the visibility in this car is non-existent?
Dane 11:31AM (11/08/2010)
Big deal... I mean the driver is a really 'Big Deal'....
Hard to even like a car that has a grill that is priced the same as your average home in America! Isn't it like 200,000.00 to build the grill?
Stupid car for stupid times...

That's a funny myth, but no you are completely wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if the grill costs 1,000 dollars but 200k? The veyron is known for outlandish upkeep costs, but usual "crazy" thing that people comment on is that it costs 20k to replace the wheels and tires.

Sorry, but no amount of rearview camera would have helped that guy. He could have started by adjusting the rear view mirrors that the car did have. Just goes to show you can have all the money in the world, but none of the brains or skills to go with it. $30,000 could have given him a few one on one driving lessons.
Also, it must be stated... the dealer should be a bit less polite and insist on some driving credentials. At the very least, they should realize that this car is difficult to drive in confined spaces like down town Chicago, and very difficult to reverse easily into traffic on a busy street with cars and motorcycles parked everywhere. They should have had the car parked and positioned better for the buyer as well.
All around clusterfcuk...

Agreed. If only the guy used his side-view or rear-view mirrors...
And driving a low-riding car like that on the streets of a large city in a north is just asking for scrapes from going over bumps/potholes.
Stupid on so many accounts.
IBx1 11:14AM (11/08/2010)
Looks like the corners of the two cars had a very soft touch, and then I didn't hear any scraping on the sidewalk after. Also, why the hell would you buy a supercar in a city? Or test drive it there, for that matter?

Yeah, a pretty light touch, but even a light touch = $30,000 in a Veyron.
What I'm wondering is whether the value of the Corolla appreciated after this incident... I bet there's some $100,000/gallon paint residue left on it.
