World Series Game 2 starter Matt CainSAN FRANCISCO -- The pitching duel that wasn't in Game 1 of the World Series arrived in Thursday's Game 2, at least until the eighth inning.

San Francisco's Matt Cain out-pitched Texas lefty C.J. Wilson, then the San Francisco offense poured it on late as the Giants won 9-0 at AT&T Park to take a 2-0 lead in the Fall Classic as it shifts to Texas for Game 3.

Wilson and reliever Darren Oliver kept the Rangers close through seven innings, but the Texas bullpen imploded in the eighth, allowing seven runs as a procession of relievers -- Darren O'Day, Derek Holland, Mark Lowe and Michael Kirkman -- struggled in every facet.

All of the Giants runs in the eighth came with two outs. Buster Posey started things with a single. Nate Schierholtz and Cody Ross followed with walks. Aubrey Huff drew a walk to plate the first run of the inning against Holland. Lowe replaced Holland and walked Uribe to score Schierholtz. An Edgar Renteria single scored two more runs and forced Holland from the game. Kirkman followed and surrendered a triple to Aaron Rowand and a double to Andres Torres, and the rout was on.

Renteria provided the first run with a fifth-inning homer off Wilson, belting a high 91 mph fastball out to left.

In 7 2/3 innings, Cain gave up four hits, walked two and struck out two. Javier Lopez got Josh Hamilton to end the eighth and Guillermo Mota pitched the ninth once the game was out of hand.

The Rangers were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Texas' Wilson allowed two runs on three hits in six innings.

Turning Point: With runners on second and third, after a wild pitch, with one out in the top of the sixth, Cain got Nelson Cruz to foul out and Ian Kinsler to fly to right.

Stud: Cain, who had four 1-2-3 innings, has not allowed an earned run in his 21 1/3 innings this postseason.

Dud: Holland and Lowe, who combined to walk four and allow five runs as the Giants put the game out of reach.

Key Stat: Cain this postseason has three starts of at least 6 2/3 innings and no earned runs. The only other pitchers to do that are Waite Hoyt in 1921, Christy Mathewson in 1906 and Kenny Rogers in 2006.

The Big Picture: Teams that have taken a 2-0 lead in the World Series, with the wins at home, have won the World Series 36 of 46 times.
