Poisoning Ruled Out in MI6 Spy Gareth Williams' Mysterious Death
Updated: 2 hours 4 minutes ago
(Oct. 28) -- The mysterious death of MI6 spy Gareth Williams continues to confound British investigators after a slew of toxicology tests have come back indicating no presence of alcohol, drugs, poisons or any other substance that could have caused his death. In September, detectives had ruled out almost all other possible causes of death aside from poisoning.
The police are not planning any further tests, according to the BBC.
Williams' naked and decomposing body was found stuffed into a North Face bag in the bath tub of his London flat on August 23. The police found no sign of forced entry and no sign of a struggle in his apartment. Investigators say he had been padlocked inside the bag, but had not been stabbed and there were no obvious signs of strangulation either. They say he may have died two weeks before his body was found.
"Mr. Williams' death remains suspicious and unexplained and inquiries into the circumstances continue," said a Metropolitan police spokesman.
BBC correspondent Daniel Sandford said that it's unclear how much information the police is holding back and there are "strong suggestions" that Williams' laptop was missing from his apartment. But aside from that one rumor, nothing appears to be missing. The police also reportedly found a cell phone and several SIM cards laid out inside the flat.
The police are looking for a young couple in their twenties or thirties, described as looking Mediterranean in appearance, who were let into Williams' apartment building at some point in June or July. They are the only people who visited the building around the time of his death that are unaccounted for, according to the Telegraph.
