White collar craim and real estate lease contract cash and need asap

Hi, someone who was working for me, who forged my checks about 23 of them from last October to Dec and stole $30000. He is stupid instead of writing cash, he wrote his name and forged my signature, the bank still cashed all 23 chceks. The bank?s last date to claim the money expired jan 2010. I am not sure if the police will take my case, will they? I have him signed a paper basically saying he stole $30,000 and he signed but not in front of notary, also it is not typed up, is it legall? also I am paying $12000 for him to pay his past due for the rent for the apartment he has lease with someone and I want to have sole right to the apartment and use after I pay his past due, I need a good contract to protect my right. Only thing he say is that he has the lease till end October 2010 and he doen?t ggive me the co-signer?s contact info. He is on the lease still with him and he can come into the apartment anytime and kick me out. He doesn?t even yet showed me yet the lease so I really don?t know if the lease expires end Oct or not. The contract states that I can use the apartment for 3 montsh and 11 days, so I may lose money, the apartment is only available from 8/14, 2010 so I only have 2 and 5 months. He already signed a contract that he stole $30000 and also he will give me his apartment if I paid $12000 but not notarised. I was wondering if you do like this like 1 through contract that protects me. He already stole $30,000 then he gave me a check for $10,000 but after that he stole $8600 cash. p.s He also stole $over $5000 from my apartment about 1 year ago together with my check book. Then he stole $1500 about 2 weeks ago. Both time I don?t have any proof. By the way the rental office at the building he owes $12000 they said they will only renew the lease at $6600/month for the other apartment that he has lease under his name alone, the current rent is $4000 only. Can they increase that much legally? The lease sayd the market or legal rent is about $6400 they say preferential rent of $4000/month.
