Retired NFL linebacker Junior Seau was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence early Monday -- and then drove his vehicle off a cliff after his release.
Seau allegedly hit his live-in girlfriend at his home in Oceanside, Calif., around 10:13 p.m. PT on Sunday, Lt. Leonard Mata of the Oceanside Police Department said in a statement. His girlfriend sustained minor injuries, but did not require medical treatment.
"The 25-year-old victim reported that Junior Seau assaulted her during a verbal argument," Mata wrote in the statement.
Seau, 41, originally was not at his home in Carlsbad, a city about 40 miles north of San Diego, when police arrived, but agreed to return home when officers spoke to him via a cell phone. He was taken into custody around 12:20 a.m. PT and charged with one felony count of domestic battery.
A San Diego Sheriff's Department spokesperson told FanHouse that Seau posted bail at Vista Detention Facility early Monday morning. Hours after his release, Seau's Cadillac SUV was found at the bottom of a cliff in nearby Carlsbad.
"Preliminary investigation shows the vehicle left the roadway and traveled over the cliff, landing on the beach below," the Carlsbad Police Department said in a news release. "The vehicle was only occupied by the driver, a male who was identified as Junior Seau."
He was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with unspecified injuries. The Carlsbad PD said an investigation is under way to determine what led to the accident that was reported at 8:42 a.m. PT.
Seau played 13 seasons for the San Diego Chargers -- then seven additional years between Miami and New England -- and is one of the region's most beloved figures. He owns two restaurants in the area and his non-profit organization has donated thousands to area charities. Seau most recently starred on Versus' "Sports Jobs with Junior Seau," a show that ran for a season but ceased production last year.
TMZ.com was the first to report the arrest and the accident.

Maybe too much kava tea?
Sad to hear that this~!! I always liked Junior . I had the oppurtunity to see him play in Ssn Diego against Baltimore years back.I live on the east coast of Va. That was a once in a life time for me. Domestic issues can really greatly change your life in a quick moment. I hope he is able to rebound from this and recover quickly. Best of luck to his family, friends ,employees and fans. This kind of event seems to be happening way to often.
I agree, hope he and the girlfriend will be okay.
When I first saw the headline and started reading the article I was afraid he had committed suicide. I wish the writer had mentioned earlier that he had survived.
Too much ego...
He's just showing his other Samoan side.
Another athlete who trusted in his fame/wealth instead of in God.
Wow,thanks for your insite reverend. Since you have the right to speak on religion I have the right to tell you were to stick it. Women will make you do some strange things god or not, oh wait mybe if he was super religios he would have chosen a little boy instead of a woman and he wouldnt have this problem
yeah, the article specifically says that seau was more into his money than god. obviously its all over the article. you stupid bible thumpers just need to crawl under a rock and shut the hell up. its really old. keep your religion to yourself. i dont believe in god
I don't have a job but I don't want to kill myself!how is it your rich and want to die! I hope god help him!
Right...god. Good grief.
OMG..couldn't believe this when i read it..Hope the SUV is okay..haha
sucks if you are a chargers fan! GO COLTS!!!
what sucks to a Chargers fan is that game yesterday with the Rams.
First of all, God didn't make him do or not do, that's called Free Will. Secondly, if you have the right to say stick it, why doesn't the other person have a right to express their view without being maligned by everyone who does not believe in God... they are just expressing an opinion, last I knew that was allowed in this country. Finally, and probably most important, I hope you are not saying a woman deserves domestic abuse because "women can make you do some strange things". A man can be just as trying to a woman, but we don't always have the same ability to put up a physical challenge. NO one should abuse another person, male to female or female to male, walk away, punch a wall or better yet a punching bag... something, but control YOURSELF! I loved Junior when he played ball, if he has issues I hope he recovers from his injuries and gets help... But let's not berate other people expressing an opinion because they bring up God and you don't believe, people have the right to express their opinion period.
I read the article and don't see where it even mentions anything about God or religion.
I agree with you 100%. We are not allowed to voice an opinion in this counrty an more because there are to many people who think they are always right. I hope he recovers and gets help. And maybe she needs help too. None of us were there but it still doesn't mean you can assualt someone.
rsoldano -- Well said: and true.
Lately alot of profesional athletes feel they are above the law for some reason or another. For his sake I hope junior is not one of these guy's.good luck to him, but I don't care who you are. YOU DON'T EVER HIT A WOMAN! Grow a pair and man up.
Steriods anyone???????????
First mistake was dating a 25 year old dumb. Try dating a WOMAN not a PARTY DATE. Next try talking to a woman instead of kicking her butt. Last WALK away be a bigger person
