Let's get this party started.

The first official Bowl Championship Series standings, which will decide which teams will play for the national title, were released Sunday night. And -- a drum roll, please -- Oklahoma sits on top of the standings, followed by Oregon and Boise State.

So, there you have it.

Of course, let's keep the applause to a minimum. Even the boos. Enjoy the appetizers with your favorite soda or cocktail. The Sooners may not want to get too comfortable, or pose for photos, especially after the past two weeks.

Just ask Ohio State, wink-wink. The Buckeyes became the second No. 1 team in the traditional polls to lose in October when Wisconsin beat them on Saturday.

And, let's keep an eye on Alabama, too. The defending national champion, at No. 8, isn't out of the cereals, nuts and pretzels -- you know, the Party Mix.

The title chase is far from over, and the experts -- the ones with the party hats -- caution that plenty can still happen. The greater debates are still to come, since the standings will be revealed weekly through Dec. 5.

Oklahoma's emergence as No. 1 is actually a popular pick, despite the Sooners' close calls thus far. But after their 52-0 blowout over Iowa State and Nebraska's tumble against Texas, many figured the Sooners could leap to the top.

But for how long? Oklahoma has six regular-season games remaining, starting Saturday at undefeated Missouri and ending with Oklahoma State.

And even if sentimental favorite and BCS party crasher Boise State had landed at the top as some projected, most still believe it would slip anyway in later weeks due to its strength -- or lack thereof -- of schedule.

Of course, this is the first week that Oregon has been No. 1 in the Associated Press football rankings, which go back to 1936. The Ducks moved up one position during an off week.

The unbeaten ranks will further thin on Saturday with this juicy two-step -- Oklahoma at Missouri and LSU at Auburn.

Auburn, TCU, LSU, Michigan State, Alabama, Utah and Ohio State round out the BCS top 10.

Naturally, Alabama needs to finish 12-1 through the league championship to have any hope of reaching the BCS title game. However, the Tide received help last Saturday as Ohio State and Nebraska fell to the wayside.

If two of three conference champions from the Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-10 each have a defeat, many also believe that a one-loss Alabama would finish ahead of unbeatens Boise State or TCU.

Like it or not, the BCS standings are derived from a formula that includes six different computer systems as well as the USA Today Top 25 coaches' poll and the Harris Interactive Poll, which polls 114 voters in a panel made up of former collegiate coaches, players and administrators as well as current and former media members.

Let's get this party started. But pace yourself.

Plenty can still happen.
