ORIG 5TH AF BOMBS JAPANESE SHIPS AT RABAUL 10/12/43 BY A.P. PHOTOGRAPHER ED WIDDIS, IN NEW GUINEA DESCRIPTION is a large RARE ORIGINAL AERIAL COMBAT PHOTO from the collection of AP photographer Ed Widdis, depicting Simpson Harbor at Rabaul, under attack by the U.S. Army 5th Air Force. Known as the "Pearl Harbor of the South Pacific", Rabaul was captured from Australian forces in February 1942. Tafter it became a prominent Japanese base. The Japanese stronghold is being bombed on the first day of OPERATION CARTWHEEL, General MacArthur's strategy to isolate and reduce the main enemy naval base for New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Elements of General George Kenney's 5th AAF have a Japanese ship in their bomb sites, and explosions straddle the ship's position as she makes for open water (just left of center). The Japanese airfield is visible on the right. At the top left is an active volcano. FROM THE 5TH AAF CHRONOLOGY: Tuesday, 12 October, 1943 The Allied Air Force begins a major air offensive against Rabaul on New Britain Island in the Bismarck Archipelago with the aim of isolating and neutralizing it. Almost 350 B-24's, B-25's, P-38's, and RAAF airplanes pound the town, harbor, and airfields in the area; over 50 Japanese aircraft are destroyed, 3 ships are sunk and several damaged, and several small harbor craft are sunk. B-25's fly small strikes against targets on Timor Island and other areas of the Netherlands East Indies. This black and white photo measures8 3/8" x 8 5/8", and has a sepia tone owing to it's age. The back is stamped in purple ink: "passed Military censor G.H.Q. S.W.P.A." as shown in the scan. The photo is in over all excellent condition. This photo was taken in New Guinea by Associated Press photographer Ed Widdis. This is a once in a life time opportunity for the serious collector to own ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS from the personal collection of Associated Press photographer ED WIDDIS, who was assigned to the 5th AAF in NEW GUINEA. Not your typical GI snapshot, these are higher in quality and composition, as you would expect from a professional photographer. Most of the photos have never been published. All were processed "in theater". Those that have been published would have been from prints or negatives sent back through channels after Mr. Widdis had his person prints made. These would be the very first of the first generation prints. T will be about two dozen "nose art" photos posted for auction.
