Always Coke

John Douglas

Always Coke

This shop ruin with the Always Coke sign is one of the few remnants of the old town of Rabaul, in Papua New Guinea. Rabaul was a thriving port, once the centre of music in PNG.
On the 19th September, 1994, two volcanoes erupted and destroyed the town.
In the background the volcano Tuvurvur rumbles on.
Rabaul has since been rebuilt nearby, but the ever settling volcanic ash coats the new town and turns acidic in rain. Rabaul is not the thriving, bustling place it once was.

my coke dealer wants to have a word john.

Wow, I remember the Rabul eruption, but had no idea it had such a tragic impact. That’s very sad, a whole culture lost. :(

Sometimes trademark logos help make the point for an image – shame that there’s so much regulation.
Shayne, there are still many people suffering as a result of what happened in 1994 in Rabaul. For anyone interested in helping, the townsfolk always really appreciate any old clothing, anything really, if you can spare it.
