America's Most Stolen Products

Which retail goods are most alluring to professional shoplifters? The list may surprise you.

Not surprisingly, American stores saw a spike in shoplifting in 2008, when the economy hit a downturn. According to the Global Retail Theft Barometer, produced by the UK-based Center for Retail Research, retail crimes such as shoplifting, employee theft, and supply chain fraud rose 8.8% in the United States, to $42.2 billion, that year. In 2007, retail crimes rose 1.5%.

But at least one US-based survey says that store theft is now on the decline, if only slightly. Early results of the latest National Retail Security Survey were released this summer and showed that retail theft decreased to 1.44% of sales in 2009, down from 1.51% in 2008. That meant that total losses rang up to $33.5 billion last year, compared to $36.5 billion in 2008, say authors of the survey, a joint project of the National Retail Federation and the University of Florida.
The modest decline is good news for American families who ultimately pick up the tab for stolen goods. Shoplifting is estimated to cost the average US household some $200 to $300 annually in higher prices. It's also an encouraging change for honest citizens who every year lose out on tens of millions in uncollected tax revenues because of retail theft.
So what are shoplifters nabbing, and why? Are cultural trends mirrored by criminal activity? Here Minyanville presents those objects that are most wanted -- and least paid-for -- across the country.

Baby formula is no surprise. That has always been a big stealer due to its absurdly obscene markup that bears no relation to reality of production. That stuff is marked up about 10,000 times over production. They charge, what, 22.99 for the quart of formula that costs 3 cents to produce? That stuff ought to be 75 cents a quart. Not sure who are the bigger thieves, the manufacturers or the people that pilfer it.
Same with razor blades. You can get a trial razor and three blades for this week's newest version of the same old thing for $2.99. Toss your old razor and then find that the 6 replacement cartridges are 14.99. And if that wasn't bad enough you find that the cost of your old blades is quadruple what you were paying two years ago and now they are 13.99 for 6. Anyway, the manufacturers steal from the consumers by price gouging and the consumers retaliate by stealing from the stores. Pity the poor store owner. What we need are boycotts of certain manufacturers.

Are you tired of all these scams and business opportunities that are being posted? The internet DOES offer real jobs that you can work as an employee but you just have to know where to find these jobs. I really do work as an EMPLOYEE for a large internet corporation. ( http://tinyurl.com/ApplyForJobs ) has the info about how to find real work at home jobs offered by well known companies. These jobs are NOT business opportunities. These are employment positions. This is not a scam. Hope this helps!!

I agree with what Bill just said, but the thing that needs to be added is that these high prices are caused by the sue happy people that want millions if the product hurts them in any way and that causes our insurance premiums to be high. 40 percent of my business cost is insurance premiums.

Oh common y'all ---A shoplifter will steal anything if they can get away with it - and it is not always the so called Pros --
it is the little old lady who opens a bag of candy and puts a handfull in her pocket - you know - the old lady who taught her children to "Never take anything that doesn't berlong to you"
And the shoplifter (not the pro) will steal anythinjg they "want" - even if it is inexpensive - even if it is on sale - steal it because it is there - and no one is watching them
and they steal from everyone - the big chains - the mom & pop stores - the grocer - anyone - if they are "not afraid" of getting caught
as the owner of a small business - who sells all non - necessities I have had theft in my business every year for the last 50 years - the economy might effect a few - but -A THIEF - IS A THIEF - IS A THIEF -
one year the police brought me back 15 Halloween masks that they found on kids in the neighborhood that they had all stolen and were walking down the street bragging what they got away with - of course they were "dumb" enough to brag to a off duty cop -
it is now filtered into the pricing of everything you buy - the thief cost YOU - the store prepares for them.
