Mac OS X 10.6.4 Update

Today Apple released Mac OS X 10.6.4, the 4th major update to Mac OS X Snow Leopard.  To update, simply run Software Update or download the 10.6.4 Combo Update from Apple.

If you're going to test it out, backup any data, and if possible clone your hard drive before testing this update.   Post your results in the forum!

What we know about 10.6.4 so far...
  • New 10.4.0 Darwin kernel - all Core i3/i5/i7 now supported- including Core i7 980x!
  • USB wake from sleep issues solved.
  • No Integrated Intel GMA HD without NVIDIA 320M.
  • No ATI 5xxx support yet.
  • No NVIDIA 4xx 'Fermi' support out of the box.
  • For audio issues with LegacyHDA + DSDT, install 10.6.2 AppleHDA Rollback from MultiBeast.
  • For USB issues without a DSDT, we've put together USBFamilyMOD 9.9.9 installed in /Extra/Extensions.  It's in the latest MultiBeast.  Alternately, you can roll back IOUSBFamily.kext in System/Library/Extensions to 10.6.2 or lower.
  • Patched 10.4.0 kernel for unsupported CPUs available here.  Will be in a future MultiBeast rev.
  • Older solutions for 10.6.3+ at the Mac OS X 10.6.3 Update post
Any workarounds will be posted here.  Testing is underway.

Just updated this afternoon and all went smooth. Just a few things I noticed; IOUSBFamily and AppleAHCIPort kexts are not updated, so if you are using an earlier or mod'd version of either of these you don't need to revert. And yes, AppleHDA.kext has once again changed; I will be posting my results and new mod'd AppleHDA for ALC888 in the forum.

Dell Studio 14z Dual Boot.... I just updated and everything is a go! The only thing I had a problem with is with the Wireless Driver. After updating, it did not work. After reinstalling the wireless driver a few times and reinstalling the IIO80211Family a few times, it's now up and running....

updated my HP Mini and when the unit rebooted a Dell laptop was in place of the Apple logo during loading and it just seems to hang with the circling progress icon at the bottom of the screen. I am going to give it 30 minutes before I manually reboot it to see what happens.

    ShotWithAnSLR said...

UPDATE: I had to manually reboot the machine, at which point I received the kernel mismatch error. TO fix this, I loaded the OS from an external hard drive that I had installed a functioning copy of OSX 10.6.3 onto, once I was logged in, I mounted the internal HD and replaced the mach_kernel with the older version. things look good now.

I had a kernal panic on boot up when going from 10.6.3 to this. I had used iboot+multibeast to get to where i was. Wiped my drive clean and did a clean install of the OS. About to try doing the multibeast method with the combo updater as if it were 10.6.3 like in your guide. If all goes well I will post results. If not will post anyway with my failure :D

    D A said...

Ok so here is what I did after kernal panic. Clean install of OS using iboot+multibeast method. When you get to the part with multi beast and the combo updater, use the 10.6.4 instead of the 10.6.3 and then finish like the guide says to do. Worked like a charm :D!

Ok, I've updated a second ago. Everything works (well... I had to put back my copy of stuff from System/Library/Extensions and use Kext Utility to get sound working), no problems with webcam (video is still upside-down like before but... I can survive with iGlass :P), the only issue I found is battery. Status is totally messed up. If I unplug the charger it says e.g. 1h 50 min but after a sec - 2h 10 min, then... 1h 30 min >.<" Anyone willing to make a new version of AppleACPIBatteryManager which seems to be the problem? ;-)

For those who said audio is working, is 5.1 channel working? I mean when you play AC3 movie, do you get audio from all 4 line outputs(Front out, Center/Woofer, Back spk out and Side spk out)?

    My system is:
    GA-P55A-UD3, GT9800, 4G Ram.

The audio is working after Rollback, but the System Pref shows only 2 line outs and one digital out. When I select the first line out, the audio came out from side spk, when I select the second line out, the audio came out from center/woofer out. In Mac, digital out is the only way to get 5.1 channel audio.

    Thanks

Upgraded to MacOS 10.6.4 on my Macbook Pro with NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics and now have an error that the version of my GPU driver (19.5.8f01) requires an updated CUDA driver (currently 3.0.14) or some of my CUDA enabled applications will run slowly or stop functioning.

I tried downloading the 19.5.8f03 GPU driver, but it does not yet include support for the 330M on the Macbook Pro and I do not see any other updates available at this time.

19.5.8f03 can be installed on any system if you edit setup checking algorithm. Simply locate "distribution.dist" inside driver package, then delete part of program with "unsupported_title" and "unsupported_message" strings, save and install.

Update from 10.6.2 to 10.6.4 with little issues.
    Gigabyte P55M-UD2
    Intel i7-860

    Steps:
    * Used 10.6.4 Combo update file
    * Reboot
    * Manually removed JMicron36xeSATA
    * Used MultiBeast to install
    > JMicron36xSATA
    > 10.6.2 AppleHDA Rollback
    > Both System Utils selected
    *Reboot

The steps above was necessary to get sound working and get rid of the orange disc icons on SATA disks.

    @Anonymous (@wacky) THANKS!

FYI: for those using a similar setup that are thinking of updating bios and updating 10.6.4 here is the process:
    1. download new multibeast v3 and unzip.
    2. download 10.6.4 combo update
2b. download DSDT file from tonymac db; rename "DSDT.aml" and leave on desktop
    3. boot into windows (for me xpp)
    4. go to gigabyte and download new firmware for motherboard (for me f11 for rev.1)
    5. download @bios utility and extract exe to desktop
    6. install @bios utility
    7. run at bios and choose update bios (from file on disk) and navigate to file on desktop
    8. after successful : reboot into bios
    9. reset optimized defaults; AHCI; 64 bit; boot order; no splash screen : save and exit
    10. boot into os x
    11. run 10.6.4 combo update pkg : DO NOT RESTART
    12. verify your DSDT.aml file exists on the desktop
    13. run multibeast v3 choosing: userDSDT; under audio (grayed out btw) 10.6.2 audio rollback (subdir was not grayed out); and utilities
    14. after completion shutdown and boot up to os x
    15. still not sure if necessary, but I deleted "NullCPUPower...kext" and "IOAHCIBlock...kext" from extras/Extensions and then dragged extensions folder onto Kext Utility.app

    G to G

    here is my setup: i5-750/ga-p55a-ud4p-ver.1-f11/gv-n250-1gi/corsair-xms3-ddr3-4gb/cm-hyper212plus/optiarc/3xWDsatas/antec-tp650/cm650IIadv/osx.6.4/win7p64/xpp-x86/DellUltrasharp/applekey-a1243

Hello all! I am VERY excited about this setup! It is by FAR the easiest I have come across online!

I do have one problem - after updating to 10.6.4 and running the Easy Beast setup my audio is nonexistent. I have connected headphones and speakers to both the front and back ports on my rig, to no avail. It's as if the computer does not recognize that there's anything there. Even the volume control in the menu bar is grayed out.

The odd thing is that before I restarted(once MultiBeast was finished) the audio was just fine.

    My build consists of:

    - Asus P5k-E motherboard

    - 500 gig Seagate hard drive

    - 2 gigs of DDR2-800 RAM

    - Snow Leopard(only OS on the build)

Any help would be much appreciated!!

    Works perfectly for me!

I originally had a problem about 2 weeks ago with my wireless card. I tried everything; new kexts, different slot, etc. turns out the card was rated never to work on OSX.
My wireless USB adapter arrived in the mail today, so I reinstalled Snow Leopard using iBoot Supported and Multibeast 2.2
Everything works perfectly. Sound would only come through the HDMI connection to the speakers on my screen, but once i installed ProTools, sound ran through my usb mBox2.

    Sound - check
    HDMI 1080p - check
    Wireless - check

Very simple, very straightforward. Tony knows his stuff, people!
