Mac OS X 10.6.3 Update

Today Apple released 10.6.3, the 3rd major update to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. To update from 10.6.2, simply run Software Update or download the 10.6.3 Delta Update from Apple.

If you're doing a fresh install, you can download the 10.6.3 Combo Update from Apple, which bundles the 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 updates, making it possible to go straight from 10.6 to 10.6.3.

When you install a point update, know that it will erase and update some of your kexts in System/Library/Extensions. This can render components inoperative- especially when Apple modifies their graphics kexts.

Remember to do a full backup of your data before running the update- you never know what will happen. Also do a full backup of your /Extra folder and your /System/Library/Extensions folder before installing the update. You may need some of those kexts, especially if you have made changes to device ids, modified AppleHDA.kext, etc... To back up, simply drag your /System/Library/Extensions folder to desktop, and rename the folder 10.6.2 System-Library-Extensions, or whatever will reference it best for you.

If you're worried about borking your install, don't feel like you have to update right away- wait a week and see if it breaks anything. If I hear of any updates or workarounds needed for graphics, ethernet, sound, or any other component, I will add them to this post.

Please post your results with the update in the forum! It will help others with similar hardware! See you in 10.6.3!

PS: I'm finishing up a brand new installation guide based on iBoot + MultiBeast. After a day or two of feedback regarding this update, it will be posted here. It represents a new universal Boot CD method for any Intel Core i3/i5/i7. It is completely terminal-free and the easiest yet. And the Boot CD enables full graphics acceleration, audio, and ethernet by default. Open to testing!

10.6.3 ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS

About This Mac
Still says Intel Quad-Core Xeon for i5/i7 by default.  However, you can inject i5/i7 info into About this Mac by inserting SMcputype into smbios.plist.  This functionality is included in the latest MultiBeast.
For i5, use 1537.  For i7, use 1793 .  Thanks to Lightspeed and zoleg

USB
Some users are reporting lack of USB support upon update to 10.6.3.  In order to be 100% functional, USB needs DTGP + UHCI/EHCI fix applied in a modified DSDT.  Otherwise USB keyboard/mouse will not work.  If you do not have a DSDT, you may end up with no USB keyboard/mouse support.

USB Wake from Sleep
If waking from sleep with current DSDT edits and 10.6.3 IOUSBFamily.kext, you will have to re-plug any devices that require power. There is no official fix besides rolling back to 10.6.2 for now.  We're working on new DSDT edits that will solve this issue.
  • UPDATE:  Use the Power Button on your case to wake from sleep instead of USB.  There will be no USB issues, and even better, you do not have to change the IOUSBFamily.kext.
USB Solutions For Non-DSDT Users with No USB
  • 10.6.2 IOUSBFamily.kext Rollback will alleviate all issues, including trouble with iPhone/iPod Touch syncing. This will included in the next MultiBeast
  • USBFamilyMOD 9.9.9 is now included in the latest MultiBeast This allows full USB support without DSDT with the exception of syncing iPhone/iPod touch.
Audio
The 10.6.3 update will break the current audio solution for  LegacyHDA + DSDT for ALC 888/888b/889.  The good news is that 889a is still supported- you can use the same solution as before.  Bad news is that we'll have to come up with a better solution for these 3 codecs.

Non-Vanilla Audio Solutions
  • One less vanilla approach is to install the 10.6.2 AppleHDA.kext. Your system will work exactly as before.  I've rolled up a package installer that will do the job automatically. This functionality is available in the latest MultiBeast..
Download the 10.6.2-AppleHDAInstaller

Vanilla Audio Solution
  • Forget about LegacyHDA.kext and the DSDT edits and just use VoodooHDA.kext.  It works fine with the 10.6.3 AppleHDA.kext in initial testing.  Available in MultiBeast.

SATA Hard Drives
You may notice that upon 10.6.3 and reboot, all of your SATA drives are orange, hot swappable, and show up as External.  However, your drives will behave 100% normally.
  • If you're bugged by this, you can install IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector or JMicronSATA in /Extra.  Available in MultiBeast.
    ATI Graphics

    10.6.3 SleepEnabler.kext
If you're using SleepEnabler.kext remove it before the update and update to this new version"Remove SleepEnabler.kext if you use it, this is very important step, old sleepenabler + new kernel = panic."  netkas.org

Hey Tony (and friends)....I built my Hackintosh with a GA-EX58A-UD3R motherboard, a Intel i7-930 processor, Ati Readeon HD 4870 video card, and 12GB 1600 DDR3 memory. Everything seem to be fine when booting with the EFI. How do I get it to work booting from the hard drive? Can you tell me exactly what to use in Multiblast for audio and the rest of the components on the motherboard? Thank you.

All seems to be working great for me (GA-P55-UD3R i7 860). Two things I noticed though. First AppleAHCIPort.kext has been changed, hence why the orange HD icons. Secondly, audio of course it does not work anymore however unlike before, all of the device/jack info is retained in system profiler (10.6-10.6.2 it would state No Audio Info) and as well, the sound icon remains in my menu bar. This looks rather promising in regards to using the vanilla 10.6.3 AppleHDA.kext. I will report back if I find anything promising. :P

I'm having the same problem as Anonymous @ 2:38pm:
Mac WILL NOT recognize my keyboard and mouse. They both work/light up during the BIOS and both still work on another computer, but as soon as my Hack Pro boots into OSX 10.6.3, the mouse optical light immediately goes out and the keyboard becomes worthless.

What really sucks is that I started to update yesterday, but ran out of time and only installed a couple of things. Today without even seeing that 10.6.3 was released, I downloaded and installed what I figured was the rest of what I didn't get yesterday. Ouch!

everything working, including the sound thanks to your audio installer for the 888.

Before I checked here, I found the AppleHDA to be the offender by looking in kernel.log. But even when i tried to manully put my 10.6.2 from backup in play, it would not work.

      Thanks a bunch!:)

      Tony,
Thanks for jumping on this so soon after 10.6.3 is released. Very impressive and a huge service to the community.

      1.
Once you do get a definitive guide if you could start a new thread in the forum rather than editing the existing thread I think it would make things much clearer so that users don't have to wade through 30 plus pages, most of it related to 10.6.2

      2.
Ideally the new guide will have everything in it rather than linking to old guides for parts of the install method. Having everything in one place makes things so much clearer for everyone, reduces confusion, and hopefully will reduce the number of people who have problems because they did not follow your guide properly.

Once again, thanks for all the good work you are doing.

      Lightspeed said...

In order for you to see i5 or i7 in About This Mac or System Profiler, the bootloader you use needs to be patched to return the proper value for those cpu types. Once the authors get around to it, you'll see i5 or i7. I recompiled AsereBLN 1.1.9 with the proper value for the i7 and it's recognized by OS X.

I sort of did on the forum. I don't really want to post a binary of boot. I would except that if I do it right, I have no way of testing that the i5 works as well. In my case I just stuck the value in the right place since I don't need to test for the i5.

Hi Tony - update went fine however sound is the issue - I am slightly wary of using the 10.6.2 AudioHda file as Apple did an upgrade to the MacPro some weeks ago which replaced the Apple HDA kext file. The reason for the update was that in a 2009 MacPro calling any function involved audio caused the processor temp to rise by 10-20 degrees Celsius and power requirement to go up from 73 watts to over 150 watts.

I would love to hear of another solution as I am forcrd to use a USB sound device (Griffin iMic) which works fine.

      MB is an MSI GD80.

the sound issue,it Still shows in System Profiler, as being present, but not in the system preferences, so there is a disconnect between the kexts loaded and the system Preferances.
just my 2 pennies, not that they are worth the copper with Obama in charge.

Hey everyone, I just installed osx 10.6.3 and it's running amazing. I have a ud2 i5 750. I had some help from SD. I used multibeast. I was also able to put the i5 in About this Mac. The only issue I had was with the sound. Even after installing tony's patch, it wouldn't work. I quickly realized that I could be because I hadn't updated my mobo to F8. Mine is a revision 1.0. After I flashed it, I booted back into osx 10.6.3 and voila, sound! So for all you guys with UD2's who tried tony's patch, and sound doesn't work, make sure u flash your bios with F8 for revision 1.0 or 1.1. Make sure to check which revision it is. It's written on your board.

      @anyone with usb keyboard/mouse issues
I'm using an intel x38 / ich9 board. my mouse/keyboard worked during setup and stopped working after booting as well. I was ripping my hair out, because i couldn't 'identify' my keyboard without my usb mouse -- well, i found a solution. whenever they stop working, i do the following (extremely complex) procedure to re-initialize them:
      step 1)
      unplug mouse
      step 2)
      unplug keyboard
      step 3)
      plug them both back in

also, experiment with moving them to different ports, but don't go crazy with it. i'm not proclaiming to be a mac expert or anything, but i'd be willing to bet that too many port changes might make the OS angry..

      hope this helps some people.

as far as your boot question, i accomplished it using my bios's boot menu. if you want to use chameleon to do it, there's a line somewhere in one of the files (sorry it's not more specific, but i've lost the link to the forum post where i originally found this info) that lets you select which device to boot... i believe it's in one of the boot.plist files, but i'm not certain.

Hi! Im getting a bit frustrated, tried most of all different options but after trying to get sound there is no way to go back to not have kernel panic at boot without -x. Is it because I have a retail 10.6.3 DVD and do not do the upgrade? p55m-UD2 and checked the bios 10 times so should be ok. It worked fine before with just adding busratio=20 in com.apple.Boot.plist Newbie...

@ Fredrik Persson, myself that is. Found that there were multiple sound solutions in /extensions that was conflicting. VoodooHDA.kext and AppleHDA.kext were both there, deleted both and rerun multibeast with 10.6.2 AppleHDA.kext and it now works fine :D Does multibeast not remove files from /extensions?

The system seems a little bit unstable though, does not always shutdown properly and sometimes get stucked on music cds and dvds, does not eject discs... Anyone has an idea of why?

Updating to 10.6.3 from .6.2 on my GA-H55M-S2H resulted in not being able to boot. iBoot still worked though ( :D ).

I installed a DSDT before rebooting as well as usb, audio patches.

Booting using iBoot, removing AppleHDA.kext (and using VoodoHDA), and removing the DSDT as well as upgrading to the 10.3.1 supported kernel and installing NVEnabler too made everything good again.

      Specs: i5-750, 9600gt and GA-H55M-S2H

What your has been your experience when installing iBoot and Multibeast with a Retail Version of Snow Leopard 10.6.3? They only sell the 10.6.3 disc at the store now.

I'm going to try it on my Dell Laptop Isnpirion 1520 (Core Duo 2, nVidia 8600, 4 GB Ram, 500GB SATA HDD).

Quanta TW7A laptop with T7200. Installed from "iBoot Supported" CD. Restart work doesn't, power button is not active. Built-in keyboard and trackpad work _if_ iBoot CD is present at startup. USB works. Audio works, network ok (RTL8187 USB net adapter).

Any ideas about how to get the keyboard and trackpad to work without the CD?

      Thanks for the hard work...

Installation on EP45-UD3 @ 8400 + 9800GT + 4Gig went fine but performance seems to be an issue. at the first look its all nice and dandy (graphic acceleration...) but comparing it with my MacBook Pro (realmac) I can just not understand why the Hackintosh (4 Core + faster GPU) is slower than my 2 core MacBook Pro @ 9400M GT...

      Apps where I see issues:

      - VM Ware (CPU goes just wild)
      - Guitar Pro (Audio tics)
      - Logic Pro (Audio & CPU issues)

Using XBench (I know crappy App) I get:

User Interface test = 288 (Hack) vs. 348 (MacBookPro)
      Thread Test = 199 (Hack)vs. 309 (MacBookPro)
Quartz Graphic Test = 176 (Hack) vs. 210 (MacBookPro)

BUT apart from that, GREAT work ;-) would be just interesting to understand where the perf. shortfall comes from.

(still running on min kext + std kernel - no DSDT)

      10.6.4 AUDIO

used multibeast to go back to 10.6.2 for AppleHDA, then sound worked (go to sound and change the output if only front works / viceversa, both dont work at the same time right now)

      I have a P7P55D w/ Intel i5 750, 8 gb ram, 1.5tb sata hd. Purchased SL disc.
      Choice of 4 vid cards:
      Nvidia GTS250
      Nvidia 8600 GTS
      ATI RX800
      ATI HD5670
Questions are: What vid to use? I do not have access to a MAC for the instructions. Is this totally necessary? Any other way to do it?
This is my first attempt at doing this. Any help would be much appretiated :)

I have an ASUS P5B, installed 10.6.3 using iBoot supported and 10.6.3 Retail Disk. Almost everything works, sound cards, eGalax touch screen, usb WIFI, Bluetooth, I can see extra drive on JMicron controller. Downlaoded a PS/2 Keyboard fix for my trackpad to work. Only problem is every time I boot have to unplug my USB keyboard for 20 sec then plug it back in for it to work. In system profiler it show vendor specific device when not working; composite device after I unplug and replug it. Is there anyway to get it to see it as a USB keyboard without me having to unplug every time?
