The official announcement will come on Thursday, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, a day after Cox's official farewell press conference.
Gonzalez being named as Cox's replacement isn't that big of a surprise to anybody, as he was long considered the favorite to succeed Cox before he even announced his retirement plans.
Gonzalez spent five seasons within the Braves organization -- one season as a minor-league manager and another four as third base coach -- before heading to Miami to take over as the manager of the Florida Marlins.
As manager of the Marlins, Gonzalez went 276-279 in four seasons before being fired this past June.

Not good enough for the Fish but good enough for the Bravos...
What does that say about Marlins' management ? they couldn't spell TALENT if it sat on their lap ....
Two wors. Terry Pendleton.
Baseball is a funny game. You get fired and that puts you on the top of someone else's list. The other day, a relief pitcher gave up his team's lead by giving up a 2 run homer. He got two more outs and then sat on the bench while his team re-took the lead and made him the winning pitcher. What a goofy game.
This will be more of the same as Cox, mediocre, can't win close games, can't beat the opponent teams top pitchers, can't win road games, play down to inferior teams in key situations (Senators, Marlins pirates, etc...) and can't win in the post season.
I don't understand what's all the hype about Bobby Cox he had 16 post season opportunities and only 1 world series championship. He could never beat the top teams, top pitchers and out smart top managers in the NL. He always had 3-4 starting pitchers in his rotation with 15+ wins, 2-3 hitters with 30+ HR's , 2-3 300 avg/100 RBI's yet his teams would choke in the post season.
In game 1 the Braves player thrown out at second base by the Giants catcher was actually safe by a foot. When asked by reporters why Bobby Cox didn't go out there and argue the call Cox exclaimed "You can't see sheit from the dugout". Bobby Cox will have a tuff time catching up on his zzzz's now that he's banished from the dugout, he had such a comfie sleeping post for 20 years.
Bobby Cox had good moments and also bad ones. Reason he is human. Cox could of won a few more World Series but the front office was to damn cheap to go out and get some offensive players when the Braves were only scoring 2 and 3 runs per game. It seemed like all the teams that were winning the series paid bucks to get good offensive players and the Braves relied on their scouting department to carry the load. Funny thing they were always one or two players away. Fredi Gonzales will be a great fit in Atlanta. He is a wonderful guy and a players manager also, like Cox. But the same thing will happen over and over again until the front office opens up their wallets and starts writing large checks to these free agents who could put them over the top. Anyway Fredi G is a smart move and he and Bobby Cox have a good relationship so one will never be to far away when a question comes up. Please enough with these bargain basement washed up free agents.
