    • Brett Favre Optimistic Despite 'Very Painful' Elbow Injury
    • Brett Favre's throwing elbow is hurting him. A lot. But we're talking about Brett Favre here, and so it doesn't appear that he's in any real danger of missing a game. Favre said at his press conference on Wednesday that his elbow is "very painful" and that he missed some throws on Monday night because of it. Although that might sound like a convenient excuse for not playing particularly well, Favre would have to be an awfully good actor (which ... More »

  • In 2006, the Vikings hired Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress to coach the Vikings, and under Childress, the Vikings have improved into one of the NFC's top teams.

Minnesota has shown a two-game improvement in each of Childress' first four years with the Vikings, and in 2009, the Vikings reached the NFC Championship game for the first time since 2000.

Childress' squad went 6-10 in his first year with the Vikings, but thanks to the seventh-overall pick in that year's draft - Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson - the team improved to .500 his second year of 2007.

Minnesota Vikings History

The Vikings began play in the 1961 season, taking their nickname to honor the state's large Scandinavian heritage. The team quickly improved from being an expansion club, and became one of the NFL's best teams during the late 1960s and 1970s.

Thanks to a strong defense nicknamed the "Purple People Eaters," the Vikings finished 12-2 in the 1969 season and won their first NFL Championship, beating Cleveland in the last title game before the AFL-NFL merger. However, Minnesota bid for the Super Bowl IV title was derailed by the AFL Champions from Kansas City.

Minnesota returned to the Super Bowl in the 1973 season thanks to a 12-2 record, and the Vikings beat Washington in the first round and won at Dallas for the NFC crown, but fell to Miami in Super Bowl VIII. The next year, the Vikings ousted the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams at frigid Metropolitan Stadium to repeat as conference champions, but fell to Pittsburgh in Super Bowl IX.

The Vikings returned to the Super Bowl two years later, and became the first team to lose four Super Bowl games with a 32-14 loss to Oakland. Minnesota advanced to the NFC Championship game in the 1977 season, but fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Cowboys.

In 1982, the team moved indoors to the Metrodome, leaving behind outdoor Metropolitan Stadium, but also fell back towards the pack in the NFL after a strong two decades outside.

Minnesota returned to the NFC Championship game in the 1987 season, but lost to the Redskins at RFK Stadium.

In 1998, the Vikings turned in their best-ever regular-season to date, going 15-1 with an offense fueled by rookie Randy Moss. However, Minnesota was stunned by Atlanta in the NFC title game at the Metrodome. The team also lost the 2000 NFC title game at New York.

Before the 2009 season, the Vikings made a splash by acquiring Brett Favre, and the veteran quarterback pulled the team within a win of the Super Bowl, falling to New Orleans in overtime in the NFC title game.
