A PAIR OF ORMOLU-MOUNTED VINCENNES PORCELAIN BLEU LAPIS POT POURRI VASES AND COVERS
The porcelain with blue interlaced L's enclosing date letter A for 1753-54, incised 6 to one bowl, the gilt-bronze mounts circa 1830
Each adapted from a sucrier ovale à compartiments et sa couvercle, the lobed bowl and cover gilt front and back with panels of birds in flight reserved on the mottled blue ground with gilt trellis cartouches issuing sprays of flowers, the cover with a model of a winged lion crouching atop the porcelain entwined branch handle, its tail scrolling below, the bowl with a pierced band of grasses entwined with a flower vine at the rim, entwined branch handles extending in an upright loop from the footrim to the pierced gallery, supported on a pierced rocaille scroll foot

Factory records do not easily differenciate between sugar-bowls made in the present quatrefoil form (à compartiments) and those in a simple oval (unie). Of the twelve examples recorded prior to 1756, each was of the first size, its decoration described as lapis et or (lapis with gold decoration), and sold for 144 livres including a lobed stand. This is considerably more than the 48 livres price noted for the first example made which left the kiln in the fall of 1752, its decoration of colored birds in flight. Given the date letter A on the present two examples, one can presume they are two of the first made.
