Lot Notes

Three makers of this name (a father and two sons) worked in Paris in the 18th Century. Jacques-François Vandercruse-La Croix (1724-1796) was the son of François, a master cabinet-maker in Paris, brother to another master cabinet-maker, Roger, as well as brother-in-law to the master cabinet-makers Jean- François and Simon Oeben, Jean-Henri Riesener, Simon Guillaume and founder-chaser Antoine Ravrio. An ouvrier-libre he was established in Grande rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, an area where the majority of cabinet-makers (ébénistes) settled. See J-D. Augarde, Les Ouvriers du Temps, Geneva, 1996, p. 404.
An ormolu bracket clock of very closely related design is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de La Pendule Française du Moyen Age au XXe siècle, Paris, 1997, p. 94, fig. B.
