8月10日午後4時半、日本国総領事館前。沖縄の三線（サンシン）、朝鮮半島の伝統楽器チャングのリズムとともに、世界60都市同時集会が、日本から16時間遅れてここサンフランシスコでも始まった。8月2日に最初のミーティングを開いてから丸8日目。その間に、コリアンをはじめ、日系、沖縄、フィリピン、ベトナムなど、ベイエリアのアジア太平洋コミュニティの草の根団体が中心となり、12の団体がこの世界同時集会・デモの準備にあたった。

限られた時間、資源の中で、自らの知恵をもちより、互いに資源や能力を提供しあった。手作りのプラカード、チラシ、メッセージ、ポスター、横断幕、朝鮮半島の伝統で喪の象徴とされる「白」をテーマに身にまとい、白いヒモをそれぞれが、それぞれの思いで身につけた。エイサー姿で奏でられる「島唄」そして、朝鮮半島の楽器、チンやチャングが高らかに鳴り響いた。


準備期間がわずか1週間足らずだったにもかかわらず、歩道を埋め尽くす参加者たちの思いは一丸となっていた。日本政府に対し、日本軍性奴隷制度に対する真実の追究、公式謝罪・補償を求める熱い思いが見事に集約され、時間とともに人々の数は増え続けた。

カナダから駆けつけてきた人、ドイツから参加した人、白い服をまとい親子で駆けつけた人などで、ゲストスピーカー、ユリ・コウチヤマ（日系二世･プロフィール別紙)さんと、辛淑玉（在日三世・同)さんの二人の顔が見えなくなるほどだった。

軍用性奴隷の問題は、女性に対する極限の暴力であるとの思いが世界60箇所で同時抗議行動となり、1時間の集会の後、サンフランシスコでのデモがスタートした。在日朝鮮人で唯一元「従軍慰安婦」だったとして名乗りを挙げた宋神道（ソン・シンド）ハルモニの写真を手に、「トゥジェン、カイホウ、マキバカ！」の声とともに、サンフランシスコ市民にといかけられた。

「When do we want it?（それはいつ？）」
「NOW!（ただちに！）」

性奴隷とされたハルモニたち、そしてすべての女性に対するあらゆる暴力の廃絶を求める私たちの活動は、決して、ぶれることなく前に進んでいる。

戦後60年を経た今も、在日の無権利状態は継続していて、「国民」＝日本人ではないものに対する人権の視点はいまも欠如しています。選挙権のみならず、公的なサービスから除外されている在日の中に、軍用性奴隷としてその人生を蝕まれてきた女性、ソンシンドさんもいます。

　　 彼女に、「旧日本軍についてどう思うか？」とたずねると、必ず、「兵隊さんたちも可哀想だった」と語り始めます。そして、家を離れ、玉が飛び交う中を生き抜かなくてはなりません。だから、戦争は二度としてはいけないとソンさんは語ります。その人間的なまなざしに対して、日本の政府は、どれほどの人間的な対応をしてきたでしょうか？

　　 約80もある戦後補償裁判のそのほとんどが、門前払いを受けています。司法による排除は日本人以外のものに人権がないといっているのと同じです。腐った男の成れの果てがDVであるなら、腐った国家の成れの果てが軍事力を行使して 物事を解決する国であり、「軍用性奴隷の」の存在は、まさに腐った軍隊の成れの果てでした。そして、その被害者を放置している政府もまた腐った政府のそのものです。

　　 正義を彼女たちの手に、それが今を生きる私たちの責任です。

Although 60 years have passed since the end of the war, the status of the rights of zainichi has remained constant: there has been, and is today, an utter absence of a human rights perspective vis-a-vis those who are rejected as “citizens” – this term in Japan being synonymous with “being Japanese.” Not only voting rights, but also public services are beyond the reach of the zainichi. Among them, is grandmother Shindo Song, whose life was brutally destroyed by Japan’s military sexual slavery.

When asked “what do you think of the former Japanese Army?” she will always respond with “those soldiers suffered a lot, too.” She goes on to say, they, too, had to depart far from home, having to hurl themselves into the battleground with bullets flying in all directions, facing horrendous obstacles to merely survive. So, we must not let war occur ever again, concludes grandmother Song. Her gaze as she utters these words, is filled with humanity. On the other hand, how has the Japanese government responded with humanity to grandmother Song?

Of close to eighty lawsuits filed in Japan’s courts seeking wartime compensation thus far, almost all of them were flatly rejected. Systemic exclusion of the non-Japanese from the courts is a reflection of the fact that they are legally entitled no such thing as human rights.

As Domestic Violence speaks to the despicable figure of Man, an employment of military force to address conflicts speaks to a despicable figure of Nation. The existence of military sexual slavery, then, speaks to the worst of what the Army can be and is. The government that continues to neglect – much less recognize – the surviving victims to this day, is indeed, a government just as rotten and despicable.

Win justice back into the frail hands of these grandmothers… that, today, is the responsibility called upon each and every one of us to fulfill.

　日本にルーツをもつ人間として、日本国が行なった蛮行に対して恥じずにはいられない。日本の歴史とは、他国を侵略することの連続だった。南京では、広島と長崎で亡くなった方たちよりも多くの人びとが日本軍によって虐殺された。日本という国は、侵略を繰り返し、人びとを抑圧し、そして殺戮し続けてきた国なのだ。その中でも女性たちを性奴隷にしたことは、人間として最低の行いだった。被害に遭った女性たちは、今もトラウマを抱えて生きている。彼女たちの人間としての尊厳の回復を願い、日本政府に要求する。

　一、過去の過ちを認めること。二、正式な謝罪をすること、三、歴史教科書に真実を記載すること、四、二度と誰をも性奴隷としないこと、五、そして正式な補償をすること。

First, I want to thank Miho Kim for inviting me to this very special occasion. We are here for one purpose only, we are here to recall Japan's criminal acts in recently history, especially 200,000 Asian women and girls, mostly Koreans, but also Chinese, Filipinos, Indonesians and other Pacific Islanders. We are here to remind the Japanese government and military of those years in the 30s and 40s when Japan forced 200,000 women and girls into sexual slavery, causing physical pain, emotional agony, and humiliation.

We have not forgotten we are here for all those women you called "comfort women," some of them were as young as 10 and 12 years old. I am of Japanese ancestry and I am ashamed of what you have done. Japan's history is full of colonizing countries, occupying lands, oppressing peoples, and massacring more people in Nanjing, China in the 1930s than were killed in the atom-bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan has not yet given a sincere apology to the comfort women, of whom 70% have died.

Before more die, Japan must compensate those still alive with reparation money that they can live a few more years. Sixty years have passed, but the story of the comfort women is a blot on Japanese history. It is considered history's worst crime against humanity. But the comfort women have led courageous lives despite poverty, broken booles, shame, limited work, nightmares. Many have, however, told their stories as they toured Korea-towns in the U.S. The comfort women also founded their own joint quarters in the "House of Sharing" where any comfort women can stay.

When you, who work at this Japanese Consulate, return to Japan, tell your government what the comfort women are still demanding:

1. admit the truth about your crime, 2. official apology, 3. disclose truth in your text-books, 4. never again make sex slaves of any one, and 5. reparation.
