I Took a Nap and the Teen Moms Became Celebrities?

The stars of MTV's reality show 'Teen Mom' are gracing the cover of US Weekly again this week as well as the cover of OK! magazine. I must have blinked or taken a nap for a few minutes because I missed out on the moment when the teenage mothers from the doc-style show about women who became pregnant before finishing high school turned into famous people.
I understand that the celebrity news hole is a bottomless pit, requiring more and more reality television stars and mistresses to feed its giant maw, but when I first watched 'Teen Mom' last year, I never imagined that Amber, Maci and Farrah would be as big as Spencer and Heidi.
It's been a long time coming, but reality stars have finally completed their body snatch of Hollywood.
Take a look at the top four USmagazine.com stories from Thursday, Oct. 7.
1. EXCLUSIVE: Angelina: 'Jersey Shore' Stars Put "Olive Oil, Grated Cheese" on My Bed
2. 'DC Housewife' Michaele Runs Out of Room Over White House Question
3. EXCLUSIVE: 'Teen Mom's' Amber Opens Up About Attacking Baby's Father
4. EXCLUSIVE: 'Teen Mom's' Maci Denies Ex's Cheating Claims
'Jersey Shore,' 'Real Housewives,' 'Teen Mom,' 'Teen Mom.' Nary a Jennifer Aniston or Jolie-Pitt in site. Imagine their relief.
So, what's the appeal of the teen moms? I decided to ask US Weekly senior editor Ian Drew.
"The ratings were big before we started covering them and they were hitting a note with our readers. Several of our staff members, including myself, are obsessed," Drew said. "The show consistently brings in around 4 million viewers and that number is growing every week."
Drew insists that the teen moms aren't merely the latest iteration of homely nobodies to become celebritized. He believes they are still real enough to be relatable to viewers and readers.
"There is no artifice with these women. There is no glam. It's one of the few reality shows where their celebrity doesn't encroach on it. I think MTV has been very careful not to make them into celebrities," Drew explained.
And the reason they keep making the cover of US? They're a money maker.
"The sales, of course, have been very high and the response has been great. Everyone knows someone in the situation like this," Drew said.
They do still seem to be almost like "real" or "regular" people, but that can't last for much longer. Amber already did her very star-like weight loss unveiling and it's only a matter of time before someone starts dating The Situation.
All that's really certain is that the people who star in actual movies and make music are off the hook for another weekly news cycle.

wow...a television show about people whose only talent seems to be getting knocked up...that's impressive...apparently the millions of other people who get knocked up also have the same dubious skill...yup...talk about elevating the irrelevant and pointless...

What you said is down right disgusting! I had my twins at the age of 17 and was and still am a good mother. One bad act does not define who you are. At least these girls are shedding light on the difficulties of being a teenage mother. You are only being ignorant.
The show IS disgusting. It is glorifying teen pregnancy whether it means to or not. These girls should NOT be the subject of a TV show.
That's a load of crap Mounique! I'm glad YOU are being a good mother, and I agree that one mistake - even a big one - does not define who you are. But this TV show is crap. It's not doing a public service by "shedding light" on the difficulties of being a teen mom! It's glorifying it! The teens who watch it are too immature to see the redeeming value of such a show, if there even IS any! They will only see the fanfare these teen moms are receiving!

hey it's fine with me if they have babies, have all they want, as long as not one cent of my stolen tax dollars goes to buy their little bastard kids food clothes or medical care, and spare me the it's not the kids fault,, i took care of mine raised them and never cost the taxpayer a cent ,their kids are not societys responsibility
I'm sad for them because they won't be anywhere as equipped for the pressures of the spotlight. These are young girls who don't need any added craziness in their lives. They should be focused on raising their babies and not having to worry about being scrutinized by the Hollywood microscope. Although, they did sign up to star in a reality show. :(

Imagine that...we live in a country that glorifies teen pregnancy. Anyone can be a celebrity; no talent required. The Kardashians are proof of that.

Describing the teen mom show as "HOT" is just plain crazy. I think it does alot of good, mainly showing teens that being a parent is alot harder than they could ever imagine much less being a child yourself while doing it.

The only message this sends to teens is : The way to fame and fortune is get knocked up: Really sad we find these news worthy.

THINK BACK ! DIDN'T EVERYONE IN THE LIBERAL NEWS BASH BRISTOL PALIN FOR TELLING TEENS ABOUT HER GETTING PREGANT AS A TEEN? AND TALKING TO THEM ABOUT STAYING ABSTINENT? wHEN YOU GET PREGANT AS A CHILD YOURSELF YOU TOTALY LOSE YOUR INNOCENCE DON'T BE SO FAST TO GROW UP. LET YOUR PARENTS TAKE CARE OF YOU A LITTLE LONGER BEFORE YOU ARE RUSHED INTO THE REAL WORLD

Abstinence education and lack of education about birth control caused this, you right-wing loon.
I'm not sure what "Liberal Media" you're on about, when the only news that gets any kind of ratings (Albeit low) is Fox News, the official network of the Tea Party.
All this show and this media attention is glorifying the situation. In about 9-10 months, there is going to be a whole slew of babies being born to unwed teen mothers. This is making it look cool, fun and making young impressionable women think they are going to get the luxuuries these "teen moms" are receiving. Schools are worried about cigarette billboards by their schools, they should be worried about this garbage on TV as well.

These reality shows are sinking to a new low by glorifying girls having babies. No matter that they show how hard it is if you don't have the cash. They are making them into teen celebrities by putting them on the cover of magazines. Poor teens will think this is their shot at stardom. Of course everyone knows people like these and it will just get worse by paying them to be on a show. So sad.
