Even in a time when television is arguably in a golden age in terms of new content with the successes of HBO, Showtime, 'Mad Men' etc., TV producers are still showing some desperation. With the news from EW of NBC announcing a remake of the 1960s sitcom 'The Munsters,' even former cast member Butch Patrick is scratching his head.
"Honestly, I think it should be left alone," said the former 'Eddie Munster' who was interviewed by TMZ. "I think it shows they are desperate for content."
Nobody knows what's going to happen to 'The Munsters' sitcom after they dust off the cobwebs. But if the history of gimmick TV tells us anything, old and classic doesn't necessarily mean high ratings anymore -- good TV doesn't work like a junkyard filled with old car parts.
Then again NBC could've done a whole lot worse. There's TV from the past that should stay in the past, and it's a scary thought to think about possible old sitcom remakes that would bomb in today's market and give us all heartburn. Here are the Top 5 sitcoms networks should stay away from if their execs want to keep their jobs.
'Mister Ed' (1961-1966) If a talking caveman can't make people laugh today, a talking horse wouldn't fair much better. The only thing that could make this hypothetical remake worse was if Mister Ed paired up with Zach Galifinakis and enrolled in college. Wait, maybe this is genius after all?
Beverly Hillbillies (1962-1971)
In a sense, the 'Beverly Hillbillies' franchise has been remade a few times before, think 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire.' One way to make this an awesome TV show is turn it into a reality series where Tea Party family moves into a house in the Castro district of San Francisco, or wine-sniffing elites take up residence next to the Palins in Wasilla, Alaska.
Harry and the Hendersons (1991-1993) Nothing could be more ridiculous than a WASP family adopting a bigfoot monster named Harry--it brings back nightmares from 'Encino Man' with Brendan Frasier all over again. Then again, it's hard to decide if it's more silly than a talking horse.
I Dream of Jeannie (1965-1970) Hollywood learned it's lesson when 'Bewitched' tanked at the box office in 2005, so it's unlikely it's sister show 'I Dream of Jeannie' would do much better even as a sitcom remake. But imagine how great it would be to have Robin Williams play Jeannie in drag.
The Golden Girls (1985-1992) Even though we all love Betty White, this is one show even she couldn't lift by herself. The pleasure of watching older women talking about sex died with 'Sex and the City 2.' ZING!

oh, i don't know, i think a remake of the Munsters is a great idea: they should cast jim carrey as herman, jenny mccarthy as lily, danny devito as grandpa, and barack obama as eddie...because barack not only looks the part, he's gonna be out of a job very soon and isn't qualified to do much other than play the part of a goon

Yes, they did have the New Munsters, around the same time they tried the New Monkees. Thank goodness neither one lasted very long.

LOL...They'll definitely have to have a teleprompter for Ocrappo if he gets the part of Eddie.
