 |
straight or strait? Do not confuse straight with strait, which has a similar pronunciation and spelling but is unrelated in origin. Straight is an adjective meaning "not curved," as in a straight line; strait is a noun denoting a narrow body of water or a difficult situation, as in dire straits. Strait was formerly used as an adjective meaning "narrow, confined" or "strict," but these senses survive only in derived or combined forms such as straitened, straitjacket, and strait-laced. Straitened, meaning "restricted," is used chiefly in the phrase straitened circumstances and should not be confused with straightened, meaning "made straight." Straitjacket and strait-laced have the alternate spellings straightjacket and straight-laced.
