Who We Are - Page One

                                                                         Karen

Well, as you can probably guess from the films on our syllabus, my tastes in film are wide-ranging.

While I will admit that my all-time favorite comedy is Planes, Trains and Automobiles (I’m a sucker

for any movie with John Candy in it – I know, so sophisticated, right?), I will also tell you that I am

huge fan of indie films, as well as just about any of the old classics from the 1930s and 40s. The

best film I’ve seen in awhile, though, was Slumdog Millionaire, which I actually got to watch with

the director, Danny Boyle, when he previewed his movie in Detroit. That was cool.

Having taught film classes for the past ten years has allowed me to see some pretty incredible stories; yet, I have also come to realize that there’s an amazing amount of crap out there. For this reason, “going to the movies” is something special, and I’m fairly picky about what I’ll see at the theater. Still, at home I am always finding something to watch – even the “movie review” shows – and my hope is that this semester allows everyone a chance to see some things that they might not have otherwise considered, and to learn more about the ways in which movies shape who we are and how we see each other.

                               Arata

I am not a big fan of movies.

                                          -!?-

Why? They are so powerful that I’m always afraid that I may not be able to come back to a

“real” world once I get caught by the film world and everything portrayed in the movies. Yes, I believe that they are that powerful. And this is why movies are not welcomed for my relaxation time.

Yet, I do have my favorite: The Shawshank Redemption (1996). I watched it in my country, Japan, when I was in high school, I believe. In fact, this movie has opened my eyes twice. You can imagine how encouraging and inspiring messages presented in the movie were for a Japanese teenage kid who had no idea about the world he was living in. This has been my favorite since then. Well, my perception toward the movie had never changed until I met a friend here at Wayne State who said that she didn’t like that movie because it made her feel sad. She is African-American. I really appreciated being exposed to a different point of view toward the same story. Had I not talked with her about the movie, I would have never thought about it in a different light.

Have you read Dr. McDevitt’s (or Karen’s) profile yet? You will find that she and I share very contrasting experiences with and perspectives toward movies. That means, any kinds of opinions and reactions you may have for the materials in this course are welcomed and appreciated. Hope you’ll enjoy this course!

                                       Darrin

Hello my name is Darrin Driesenga. I am currently a sophomore at Wayne State University

and I am a part of the Swimming and Diving team here. I am extremely family oriented and

enjoy the company of those around me.

If I was stranded on an island and had to pick one film to have with me, it would be The

Warriors. This 1970s classic in my eyes is one of the funniest movies out there. This movie

is not liked by many and I DO understand why but this movie doesn’t tell the types of movies

I really do like. I really enjoy horror movies. Anytime a horror movie comes out I want to go

see how it is. I’m a thrill seeker and I like movies that make me on the edge of my seat.

Having little siblings, I am also a huge of Pixar “Toy Story.”  Growing up, this was my all time

favorite movie. I would watch this movie at least 2 times a day and I remember it never getting old.

The best film that I have ever seen would be “Happy Gilmore” with Adam Sandler. Every movie (excluding “Little Nicky”) with Adam Sandler is probably the best movies out there. I would recommend any of Adam Sandler’s movies to our class. He has a wide range from “Click” to “50 First Dates” and he is one of the funniest guys around.

I have numerous favourite films and when reading this assignment I initially had

no idea how to portray my love for films. Known by most of my peers as a ‘movie

rat’, I enjoy many genres, and many different types of movies ranging from animated film to historical documentaries. However, for the purpose of this assignment I will tell you about a few of my more common favourites.

Three of my favourites consist of: The Family Stone, The Blindside, and The Express. However, I will see any movie with Angelina Jolie in it as I find her to be a very engaging actress, one that can seduce you in any character she is made to portray. I cannot say that I have ever had a bad film experience. Typically if I take the time to watch a movie, I try to pull something positive from it.

I, being a ‘movie rat’, still go to the movies on occasion. However, for films which appear to require undivided attention, I prefer to watch in the comfort of my own home. I like to engage with the films I choose to watch, and fully understand plot and character progression which in some cases is difficult without a rewind button.

My name is Kanjana but most of my friends call me by Jenna. I am a sophomore and my major is radiologic technician. Watching movie is my favorite thing to do when I have free time. I enjoy watching almost every type of movie. I don't mind watching horror movie but I'm not a big fan of this genre because after I watched the horror movie, I always have a nightmare (no kidding). I like the movies that twist in the end and make you clap your hand after it's over.I am a big fan of James Cameron and Clint Eastwood, I think their movies have good stories and left some good points for us at the end. personally, Soundtrack does matter for me to rate the movies. I know it may sound ridiculous but without soundtracks most of the films might be nothing. I have two favorite movies which are 300 and Avartar. Why I pick them to be my favorite because I never get bored from watching them over and over again, so that why I think

they are my favorite. English is my second language so movies are not only entertain me; they're also my study tool for English and American's culture. For the past five years, I've improved my listening and speaking skill from watching movies. And I think you could do the same way like I did if you want to learn another language.

                         Maggie

I absolutely love watching movies! I go to the video store on a weekly basis and sometimes find myself

struggling to find a good movie that I have not yet seen. I usually am attracted to the comedy movies,

which usually are not the most educational films out there. I like that they allow me to take some time

out of my intense academic schedule and not think about anything of importance for a couple of hours.

My favorite comedy movie is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. I have probably seen this movie

50 times. One of the reasons I like this movie so much is how hysterical it is without relying on sexual

humor, which many movies today do. However, I think the real reason I like this movie is because I love

tradition and my Dad and I watch this movie together every single Christmas Eve. Besides comedy

movies I love documentaries. I love watching real people and learning about their lives, which is probably why I LOVE the show True Life on MTV. I like a lot of documentaries but one that stands out to me is Mad Hot Ballroom. This film was about inner-city kids learning to ballroom dance instead of learning the routine of gang life. Overall I would have to say I have seen more bad movies than good ones, but it is well worth watching all of the bad ones to find that one really good one.

                  Autumn

I am a film nut! I absolutely love movies, I love going to theater, I love buying movies, I love

everything about movies. I probably own close to a few thousand movies (DVD and Blu Ray).

I would have to say my favorite genres of films would be Comedy and Horror. But I do also like

other genres!  Some of my favorite movies in comedy would include 80s comedies such as The Great

Outdoors and the Blues Brothers.  My favorite Horror movies would include Scream 1,2,3, and Rob Zombies’  version of Halloween. No disrespect to the original it was also fantastic.  Some other favorites of mine would include: Twister, Shrek, Avatar, Iron Man, Twilight, and Hangover.

The best film I ever saw, hmmm I could not choose just one. I have so many favorites that would be impossible. But I can tell you the worst movie I ever saw was Cabin Fever. My friends and I went to see this movie in the theater and we were very disappointed. It was poorly constructed and just was flat out gorse. That says a lot coming from huge Horror fans!

There are a few actors’ movies I would watch no matter what, such as Will Smith, Tom Hanks, and Katherine Heigel. One of my favorite directors is Wes Craven.

Yes I purposely watch movies over and over again. My fiancé tells me if he has to watch Twister one more time he will throw out my Blu-Ray and DVD! That also goes for my Twilight DVD’s too!

                                                                Matt

A favorite movie is often one shared with friends that you watch over and over. For me, the most memorable movie I’ve watched is Monty Python: Quest for the Holy Grail. Outside of this amazing

British comedy, I enjoy a good horror movie. The Saw series is one of my favorites when it comes to horror, simply to see what new traps they come up with (morbid, I know.)

With all the bad bootleg copies, Netflix delivering movies by mail, and even viewing new movies

right on the Internet, who wants to go to the movies anymore? Personally, I go to the movies maybe three times a year, because I have seen too many bad movies in theatres and would rather just watch them on Netflix if I know it’s not going to be a star show.  Having the luxury of Netflix may have made

few individuals stray from going to the show, but you can not top the experience of the oh-so-bad-for-you popcorn , large drink, and the perfect big screen to watch a movie on.

Kim

Hi! My name is Kimberly but basically everyone calls me Kim. I am a senior am I am currently working on my Bachelors in Social Work. Watching movies isn't one of my favorite past times ironically. I tend spend most of my time reading.

The movies that I most enjoy are romantic comedies, and Disney movies. I hate horror movies. Some of my favorite movies are Grease, any Disney cartoon movie like Aladdin, Braveheart, and Sweet Home Alabama. It's a pretty random mix, but if any of these movies are on you can expect to see me sitting on my couch with a bag of popcorn watching them. The movie I hate most in the world is E.T. That movie terrified me as a child and I still can't stand to watch it to this day.

Something that I most enjoy is watching Christmas movies when they come out on Hallmark and Lifetime. My mom and I will sit there and DVR on our television every movie and watch them together. It doesn't matter how many times we've seen each of the movies. Some of them are actually pretty decent and some are pretty bad but it's a tradition that I love.

                                                        LaBrenda

I never really have been a movie buff.  I fell in love with reading at a very young age, I love

to read.  The films I prefer are the ones that tell a story of pride and self improvement.  I am

a mother of four adult children; I spent most of my movie time taking care of them.  My

favorite all time film was directed by Douglas Sirk in 1959, The Imitation of life.  The movie

cast included stars Lana Turner and John Gavin, Sandra Dee, and Mahalia Jackson.  It told

the story of a young divorcee struggle to make it in the movies. It also told the story of a

young Black woman struggle to pass for white. As I thank back the acting was not that

great, the story line is what made the movie for me.  There are so many great films now, I can’t even begin to choose which ones I like best, and there is such a large variety now days. All of the Star wars film grabbed my interest, the great graphics and sound effects.  I really enjoyed the film Root’s and it’s sequels they told the story lines I enjoy so much.  The director as well as all the actors and actress really made the film work for me.  I am now at a time in my life where I can enjoy and appreciate a good film I am a senior and ready to graduate in May of this year.

waiting on Hollywood to make a Fightclub/300/Hangover hybrid to create a movie of my life story. I’m positive one day this will happen, until then, those titles will be a good enough substitute.

I started early on with action films when I was little, growing up in Ukraine. I remember watching translations of Arnold Schwarzenegger classics (Predator, Terminator, etc), while growing up and imagining how amazing it would be to live the lifestyle of an ultimate action hero. I’m pretty sure that I would watch any movie with Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, or Jean-Claude Van Damme. Movies like ‘The Expendables’ make me giggle with excitement like a 7th grade school girl over a Justin Bieber concert.  I believe that they provide me a much needed escape from the day-to-day routine of life and I believe this feeling is shared amongst most other warm-blooded males.

I don’t enjoy going to the movies as much with rising cost of it. However, I do love the occasional visit to the drive-in theater, and love stay-in movie nights. There’s nothing like watching from the comfort of your own home, and it’s usually free too!

                                        Harris

I am a Veteran of Military service and have always wondered why soldiers’ are deployed to foreign lands to defend them and it is not called a War.  I am what I call a socially conscience film viewer.  Any films which uplift and help inspire the spirit of those people who have fallen into deprivation “Do the right thing” and “Crash”.  However, I do enjoy light hearted comedies and spoofs such as “Life” with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence and “Scream the movie” with Marlon Wayans.  This is my last year as an undergraduate and I plan to teach next year while attending Graduate School.   I believe that the Moto “We teach one, we reach one” works.  I know films can stir emotions within; my challenge will be putting them into words.  Well, as they said in “Star Wars” with my own twist to it “May the force be with me”.

Michelle

Hi! My name is Michelle and I am a senior this year! I am graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology and I am starting a one year accelerated Nursing program to receive my Bachelors of Science in Nursing as well. I am defiantly a movie fan and really enjoy relaxing and watching a good flick. I am very busy so when I actually get the time to watch a movie at home or go to the theatre it is not taken for granted. I really enjoy comedy movies, those have been my recent watches. Some movies such as Knocked up and The Hangover.

Growing up I absolutely loved watching Disney movies and anything with a princess was a hit with me. Too much of my own surprise I really enjoyed The Lord of the Rings Trilogy as well. As a child I seen parts of some movies and until this day I still will not watch them because they scared me as a child, I know it sounds silly! I can’t watch The Wizard of Oz, ET, Alice and Wonderland and basically anything with clown in it. I guess they freaked me out as a child and until this day I still have no desire to watch them.

I am huge fans of Katherine Heigl, Viggo Mortensen, and Johnny Depp. For some reason I am drawn to the movies they are in and have really enjoyed them. A movie that I haven’t seen that everyone is telling me I must watch is Inglorious Bastards. I’m not sure if this is my type of movie but it is a movie that looks intriguing.

Jasmine

I love watching movies! I try to fit in a movie at least once a week, but it can get difficult to find time during school. I have a very eclectic taste in movies, and I can usually find something I like in almost every genre. Some of my favorite movies are: Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, A Beautiful Mind, The Departed, Goodfellas, Crash, Slumdog Millionaire...and my list can go on and on.  My favorite types of movies are psychological dramas, because they usually have a good twist at the end of the movie. The only genre that I’m not a fan of is horror movies, and those have been the only bad movie experiences that I can recall. One actor that rarely disappoints me is Leonardo Dicaprio, and I usually don’t mind seeing his movies more than once. Because things can get chaotic during the semester, I usually don’t have time to go to the movies. However, I fully utilize my Netflix account and Blockbuster when I want to catch up on the latest films. Overall, I find movies to be a very enjoyable experience!

                                                        Shanae

I love movies. So much so, that my sole goal in life was to be an actress at some point. I'm over that, but

the love of movies is something that has stayed with me. I'm a writer of fiction, and I hope to one day see

my words translated to film, and seeing as though 80% of movies originate from a book in some form, I'd

say my chances aren't too bad!

A few of my favorite movies are Slam, The Departed (I love Leo DiCaprio), Girl, Interrupted, Malcolm X,

and A Walk to Remember. I'm into spoken word and poetry, and I'm a big fan of Saul Williams, so Slam

was a great depiction of the birth of a poet. A Walk to Remember was written by one of my favorite

Romance Authors, Nicholas Sparks.

The best film I've ever seen, wow. I really don't have an answer for that, but Slumdog Millionaire and a  movie called My Name IS Khan, and Indian film I just happened upon, are movies that have stuck with me and I've recommended to everyone I know. I still go to the movies regularly, my favorite theater being the Emagine Canton, where I usually catch a matinee … or several. The last movies I saw were Takers (a disappointment) Inception, and Eat Pray Love (two GREAT films). I'm already greatly enjoying this class and can't wait to see what films and discussion awaits.

Jessica

My name is Jessica, usually people call me Jessica or Jess. I am an avid movie watcher. I usually like most type of films except for "chick flicks" (though I secretly like a few), but my favorite films are comedies, horror movies and some type of action film. I also have no problem with watching any film by Quentin Tarantino, Stanley Kubric or one starring Clint Eastwood, because they never seem to disappoint. Although I know that Kubric isn't making any new films and Eastwood says he's only directing, I know if I see one of their films to expect something good and of quality. My favorite films are Raising Arizona and City of God, I've seen each countless times, and I recommend everyone see at least once. I like Raising Arizona, because it's outwardly funny and if you see it again, you find something new that's also funny. Although it's subtitled, I loved City of God because the action in it draws you in almost from the beginning, so much that while watching it sometimes you forget it is subtitled. I also like documentaries (I'm infamous among friends and family for watching True Life and Hoarders) because they give you a gilmpse into another life and different world.

Kristin

I enrolled in this course because, frankly, if I watch a movie it goes in one ear and out the other. Film titles don't stick with me in the same way that song titles don't stay with me. I am that annoying person who says, "You know ... it's that film ... with those people ... they did something. Um, you know what I'm talking about, right?" My personal interest in the course is to broaden my horizons to include films outside mainstream media (I have already emailed all my friends with enthusiasm about "Delusions in Modern Primitivism") and learn about things like the meaning of lighting and color in film. These are my goals because I am a future educator and I want to do more than just drop a movie in the player for reasons more than "there is a sub today". Being that I am a future educator with an emphasis in Social Studies and English, my main film interests are documentaries (I put the "P" in PBS). If I watch anything other than that, it is because someone has convinced me to spend $10 to go to the show. This is a rare occasion simply because of the price. Aside from price, I also feel that if I can wait for television shows to come out on DVD, there is no issue doing the same for a movie.

Asha

My all time favorite movie would have to be Gladiator starring Russell Crowe. I really enjoyed this movie because of its intense plot, the depiction of the Roman Empire and acting skills of the actors. I would recommend this movie because there’s no "boring" part; it’s all very suspenseful and exciting from start till finish. I love movies that take place in historical times and have a rich plot. I am a huge fan war movies like Saving Private Ryan and Brave heart.  I'm very critical about the acting in movies because when an actor/actress has very bad acting skills then it ruins the entire movie for me. I felt as though the actors/actresses in Gladiator were believable. Aside from the amazing plot their acting made me engage into the movie even more.

                                                   Jennifer

Hey! My name is Jennifer, and I am a sophomore at Wayne State University with an aspiration to go into public relations. I was never that into movies until I got out of high school because many of my friends would repeat lines of movies constantly, and I would never know where they were from! So I set out to see as many movies as I could in the last few years. A problem I have with movies is I can never remember the whole plot of a movie after about a few months after watching it. But the best films I have ever seen, or remember, are the sappy girl films. For example, The Titanic, The Notebook, Dear John, and Forrest Gump. One time when I went to the movies, I had to walk out of Bruno, horrible film experience.

I still go to the movies because its something to do on a Friday night and that’s where most of my time is spent. In one week this past summer, I saw four movies in the theater and three at home. A film I have seen more then a couple times would be National Treasure and Sherlock Holmes because I had no cable. But I would watch any film if Sandra Bullock, Robert Downey Jr., or Nicolas Cage was in them.

I am Shalonda

and I am a reformed Movie Junkie. I used to watch Movies when they first hit the theatre but with my recent life style I seldom go see movies. The movies I really enjoy are from the 90’s. However, my favorite movies are not from the 90’s. The one I favor the most has to be Closer, 2004, which stars Julie Roberts, Natalie Portman, Jude Law and Clive Owen. I love this movie and can watch it over and over again. Honestly, I’ve watched the movie so much I know most of the lines in both French and English. Ha! Another one of my

favorites is Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2. I really like this movie because it has action and suspense which I am a big fan of. After watching Kill Bill I became a fan of Uma Thurman and the movies she’s featured in such as Hysterical Blindness.  Although My favorites movies are not from the 90’s the best movies I’ve seen is Mortal Kombat ,1995, I know I’m lame. I haven’t run across movies I would really bash but it’s a lot of movies that are walking that line.

I got two words for you. GEORGE CLOONEY. I think I could watch anything with him in it. I think I could watch a dull movie as long as he’s in it. Just recently I watched the Perfect Getaway, 2009, it’s starred Timothy Olyphant, who I mistaken for Josh Duhamel, Steve Zahn, Mila Jovovich and Kiele Sanchez is highly recommended. From the fives times I’ve watched it so far I know despite the mixed reviews from critics its one of my favorites and would be enjoyable to others as well. Hopefully, after taking this course I will once again be a Movie Junkie.

                                                            Ali

My favorite movies are crime thrillers and mafia movies. My favorite films are Scarface, the Godfather 1, 2, and 3 and all Al Pacino movies. The best movie I had ever seen was The Godfather 2. I loved it and I always watch it over and over again. I had a bad film experience when I went to the movies to watch The Informant starring Matt Damon thinking it was a good movie but I was wrong. I go to the movies with friends sometimes when there’s a movie that I have to watch. I have watched all the Al Pacino movies countless times. I think Al Pacino is the best actor.

Marian

My favorite movies usually derive from genres such as: horror, comedy, action, or adventure, though I am open to other genres. I think that any movie that is not lame and has a good story to tell will intrigue me. Most of my favorite movies are usually those based on books, maybe it’s because I find it great to read a book and be able to visualize it as a movie. I’ve got to say that some of my top favorite movies are The Dark Knight, Slumdog Millionaire and Shutter Island. Some of the movies I would like to recommend are Inception and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End!

There are several actors whose films I will go see no matter what and those would be Leonardo Dicaprio, Johnny Depp, Will Smith, and Jim Carey. The only bad film experience I can think of is when I went to see New Moon – the second movie from the Twilight saga. Twilight was such a huge success and they accomplished that on a very small budget. However, New Moon had a bigger budget and thus was expected to be as great or even better than Twilight, but to my mere disappointment I thought it was a lot worse and there was much more they could have done to better tell the story. I’ve read all the books from the series before and I couldn’t see how one could grasp great understanding of the film if they had not previously read New Moon.

Zahraa

Watching movies is one of the best things to do during spare time when you just want to sit back and relax. There are the movies you watch for enjoyment, informative movies that you learn from, and then the horrible ones that you can’t stop criticizing. Well at least that’s how it is with me. I watch all types of movies, but I usually prefer action and adventure. I’ll almost always usually watch a movie that’s based on a book I’ve read, regardless of whether I enjoyed the book or not. So as you can see, I have a large array of options, and I can usually find a way to keep myself interested.

But yes, I do have specific movies that I prefer over others. It’s been years now and I still can’t get over how amazing The Dark Knight was after I watched it for the first time. I have definitely intentionally watched it more than once – no less than 20 times actually.

I would probably say my worst film experiences would be when I watched the Harry Potter movies, since they don’t give much credit to the books.

There are 3 actors that I would probably watch in any movie no matter what: Alan Rickman, Gary Oldman, and Leonardo DiCaprio. They are just amazing!

I would like to recommend Shutter Island and Salt, both of which came out this year. In my opinion, it’s the ending that determines the success of a movie, and these movies have the ultimate endings.

                                                     Neli

Hello, my name is Neli Sarova. My favorite films are usually those that involve war or the military

such as Platoon, Black Hawk Down and Hamburger Hill. I’m enthralled by the experiences the

soldiers went through during the Vietnam war. I’ve been fascinated by war movies ever since I

was 16 and wanted to join the Army. I also enjoy comedy films, especially those that involved

Chris Farley, such as Black Sheep, Tommy Boy and Beverly Hills Ninja. I also enjoyed An

Inconvenient Truth and films that depict life in Eastern European countries during the first two

world wars such as Monster, a film on Stalin and the crimes he committed against his own

people. One of my favorite films was 7 pounds starring Will Smith, it was a heavy and

suspenseful movie that I won’t ever forget.

I don’t go to the movies anymore because I’m not interested in the newer films out there, they

just seem like fluff and don’t contain powerful stories that make one think. One of my worst film experiences and the last time that I actually went to the movies was to see Bruno. That was the worst movie I’ve ever sat through. I must have watched Black Sheep over 10 times and I still laugh at the scene when Chris Farley’s top bunk bed crashes down onto David Spade’s lower bunk bed. I would watch anything that Chris Farley acts in but unfortunately I won’t have the pleasure of doing that.

                                                Hamzieh

The best film that I ever saw was Death in the Funeral and Rush Hour. Death in the funeral was the one I liked the

most. It had a mostly all of my favorite actors in one movie. The movie was very hilarious. I watch this movie about

three times and I also bought a copy for my self. Rush Hour was a another greatest film to me when they had Jackie

Chan and Chris Tucker working together trying to find the council daughter. Also to me the first Rush Hour is better

than part 2 and 3.

Yes I had some bad experience on some films but the most one was The Informant. To me that film was so boring.

Matt Damon to me just wasn't that right person for this movie, and it was my first movie that I slept while watching the

movie in the theater. The movie was a about U.S. government decides to go after an agriculture business with a price-

fixing accusation from there own employee. He was working with this business and also a spy for the FBI. He wants

to become more wealthier so he is trying to take over the business by him self. he wants to buy everything for his

children. It was no action, no adventure, and it was not funny. I really don't know why they made this dumb movie.

As I said I just had a bad experience on this film.

I go almost once a week to the movies. Yes I have watched many movies more than 2 or 3 times. Example would be Sherlock Holmes, Ocean eleven, Rush Hour 1, 2, and 3, King Arthur, Bad Boys 1 and 2, and the list will go on and on. To me if I go to the film video store and rent the movie I sometimes don’t watch the whole movie but if it comes on cable in any channel I always finish the whole movie. Especially when commercials come up I be very angry.  Yes, there are actors whose film that I will see, no matter what. Martin Lawrence, Will Smith, Jackie Chan, Jet Lee, Chris Rock, Chris Tucker, Steven Seagal, Nicolas Cage, George Clooney, and Morgan Freedom. Honestly director I don’t pay attention to them.  If I see a good trailer than i see the movie. For recommendation I think everyone has there own interest what to watch but I recommend you to see death at a Funeral. I promise you that you will not have a bad experience on this film.

                                            Yatonsia

I absolutely love movies. Me and my boyfriends are huge movie buffs and are always at the Movie- Theater trying to see what’s new. We play “Scene It” which is a video game that asks questions about all types of genres of movies (new and old). WWW.rottentomatoes.com is a huge part of our decision making when it’s time to pick a movie.

I cannot pick a film for the best film I have ever seen, but most definitely I would have to say the film Inception is in my top three. That movie was unique, interesting and exceeding my expectations.  I do watch the film Bad Boys 2 over and over again because the action, the comic relief and the story line never gets old to me.

I have had a few horrible movie experiences such as: Mad Money, Salt, and Bounty Hunter. What makes these movies so horrible to me is the fact that I had expectations because of the previews and the actors, but was let down.

I am not huge on directors but I will run to see movies with Will Smith (and anyone from his family), Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie, Tyrese Gibson, Zoe Salanda, Paul Walker, Vin Disel, Jennifer Lopez, Gabrielle Union and Sandra Bullock just to name a few. From a few movies I have viewed lately I would recommend Inception, Karate kid, and The Back Up plan.

                                                            Meghan

To be honest, it’s going to be hard to categorize my own personal preference of films. My absolute favorite movies of all time, the ones I would watch (and have watched) over and over again are some of the following: Beauty and the Beast (the Disney version, yes), The Departed, Grease, and I would even add The Dark Knight to that list. I am Indian, and I do enjoy the occasional Bollywood movie even though they are three hours long, and are full of song and dance. I still frequently go to the movies, even in this age of the internet. I don’t know what it is, watching movies on the big screen, to me, is still the best way to see most films out there. I won’t go out and see just any film, it has t be somewhat appealing to me, and it’s just that sometimes that is the best thing to do with my friends on a boring day. My favorite actor by far is Leonardo Dicaprio. I have seen everything he has made, and will continue to do so. I honestly think he is a great actor. Yes, he has made some not so good movies in the past, but what actor hasn’t? His recent movies especially, I think, have been some of his best movies by far. I’m talking about The Departed, Gangs of New York, and much more recently Inception. With that, my favorite director is actually Martin Scorsese and it’s not because he makes movies with Leonardo Dicaprio (great movies at that). I actually really enjoy the movies that he makes, he is a movie aficionado and I believe it comes across in his films. I think movies are powerful things, they can make you laugh, they can make you cry, and they can make you think about the bigger picture. For this reason, I enjoy watching movies.

Hello, my name is Miroslav Dimovski. I am currently a junior in Wayne State University’s

College of Engineering. Currently I am on the Concrete Canoe team for the Civil Engineering

Wayne State student chapter and I am doing research on Bio-fuels. As a movie lover, I tend

to spend most of my time watching movies on the weekend when I can find some free time.

If I were stranded on an island and had to pick one film to have with me, it would have to be

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, because the plot is excellent in my eyes, and it gets

your mind thinking. Although, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is the movie that I would

like to be stranded with, I cannot give up on my all time favorites which are the Back to the

Future movies. The Back to the Future movies can be funny and they are very enjoyable to

watch time and time again. The worst film experience I have had thus far would have to be

the last Harry Potter film, which did not have a good plot in my eyes. Since I have such a busy schedule, I do not find too much time to go to the movies so I tend to watch most of my movies online, because it is more convenient and less expensive. If I find a movie that interests me, I will tend to find myself watching it multiple times and it will not get old, no matter who the producer or actors and actresses are. Since I like to watch almost any kind of films, I really do not have any specific movie recommendations.

It takes a lot for me to call a movie one of my favorites. In order to be considered one of my favorites I have to want to watch it anytime, over and over and not be bored or want to skip through it.  So, some of the movies that make the cut are Little Miss Sunshine, She’s The Man, The Departed, Whip It!, and Crash. Even though he’s only in one of my favorite movies, I would consider Leonardo Dicaprio one of my favorite actors that I will make an effort to go see. He also has some pretty awesome movies that are just too intense or emotional for me to watch over and over again like Inception, Romeo+Juliet, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Blood Diamond, and Catch Me If You Can.
